That's my point. Menzel seems ot have even more raw natural talent than SJ. But if he can be a really selfless footballer to boot, he'd be amazing.

And can kick the ball longer than 40 metres

Congrats to Menzel on a great comeback, which would have taken a great amount of resilience and character. Hoping that our Morabito, another luckless talent, takes inspiration from this. Both deserve long, stellar careers.
I understand that there's been a bit of communication between Menz and Morabito.

oops- here you go. In this article last year, Menzel says he speaks to Morabito every fortnight.

and, just from that article- some memorable quotes:

“So when I did my knee in my first game back then I really, really broke down then because every goal and dream I had was shattered.”

“I never questioned whether I could get through the rehab because I know I can and I know I can come back and play. But you do question where your head’s going to be at over the next year"

“One thing that I have done — and I’m sure a lot of people do it as well — when I’ve been struggling that’s when you don’t talk to people, it’s when you don’t come to the club, it’s when you stick away from people. One reason I think I do that is because I don’t want to burden anyone else or look negative to anyone else. I don’t want to bring anyone else down with me, but it’s an avoidance thing too; you avoid the issues and you just stay away."

“The club’s been so good to me and I feel a big part of the club but at times you don’t feel like you’re a player, you feel like you’re doing rehab and you’ve got your own agenda. It is a weird feeling and it’s even weird when people say to me ‘You play for Geelong’, I sort of think for a second that I haven’t played for three years and you think, ‘No, I don’t really play for Geelong’” .

"I’m known for my knee. There’s no escaping it."

"it’s a complete reminder that I’m not a player at the moment, I’m in rehab..... You get reminded of that every single day for 1000 days."

- Daniel Menzel

I've changed my opinion from "Geez how good COULD he have been! I hope he can get back and play some decent footy and maybe push 100 games, some reward for the amazing effort and the pain he's had to endure" to now thinking "Geez how good can this bloke be! He's still only young, could comfortably have 150 games still in him and the way he is going could be one of those short term Champions of our great game!".

He just looked so bloody good last night, not the goals, not the touches, not even the hanger, just his fluidity and sideways movement, the confidence in his knees and willingness to throw himself at the contest.

I'm a mentally strong person, not much gets to me personally by Dan is on another planet.

(Daniel Menzel and Nathan Vardy in the first week of rehab 2012.)

Doc: Daniel, you gotta come back with me!

Daniel: Where?

Doc: Back to the future.

Daniel: No, no, no, Doc, I just got here, OK, Vardy's here, we're gonna do rehab and get fit.

Doc: Well, bring him along. This concerns Nathan too.

Daniel: Wait a minute, Doc. What are you talking about? What happens to us in the future? What do we become shit players or something?

Doc: No, no, no, no, no, Daniel, both you and Nathan turn out fine. It's your team, Daniel,
something has got to be done about your team!

Apologies if this has been mentioned before, but anyone know where to access the Menzel doco? The usual suspect for torrents doesn't have it.
Hasn't been aired yet.

that's a great range of quotes documenting Menzel's journey from rehab to playing TK; and I loved hearing about Fred Flanagan's message to Menz too, wonderful the links that a football club can forge through it's history and the character of it's people.

Menz had one part wrong though; he was never *just* remembered for his knee, it was always mentioned in conjunction with talk of his great natural footballing talent ..

Yes, that's true, CC. I hadn't looked at it that way.

I was there on that fateful night in 2011 and it happened 20 feet from where i was sitting. It didn't look like much until menzel clutched his knee and stayed down. What a wonderful story and football does bring out some good ones. Great come back by the kid he has shown great resilience and courage to make it all this way. Hope he can stay on the park and build on it.

Don't get me wrong, I think his return game was brilliant when you consider that he has been a spectator for so long. But I still think we've been robbed of his full potential, instead of a potential GOAT we'll have a brilliantly talented performer. One potential positive aspect of his time on the sidelines is that he has watched so much modern footy now that he would be able to pick up patterns and trends in the play and know where to involve himself, as evidenced by him being the only cat to show any intuitive action against the pies.

I wrote him off and I couldn't be more happy to be proven wrong :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:
