Never read of him having any pain at all.
Well ok, late last year.
But he also stated he doesn't think he'll be fully fit until 2017.

Giving him 2 weeks in the VFL makes absolute sense if they wanted him to get more fitness and then give him an easier couple of weeks to come into the AFL side. Win lose or draw the next two games won't be as intense as the first 2. Then hopefully he's cherry ripe for the tricky run of games from rounds 5 to 9. Looking at the fixture those 5 games will decide whether we're scrapping to try and squeeze into the 8 or sitting pretty in the top 4.

I suspect he won't be playing many games this year, the next few games would be ideal for him as the expectations will be much lower.

From there (touch wood) I hope the MC restrict him from interstate games and rest hi as much as possible to ease him into as many games as his fitness and knees will allow him.

I guess its really just two stages. One is injury recovery - which has been completed. The second was match fitness. I guess with the sub rule he could be managed a bit easier on the match fitness front when required, like the Pies and Crows game last year.

The Calf niggle in NAB1 put him back in the injury recovery phase presumably and the last 2 VFL games - perhaps frustratingly, have been building the match fitness again - or still.

As you say, it must be very close given the fitness he carried into this year.

And the questionable performances thus far by the forwards have magnified his absence.

Go Catters

He's out of contract at the end of the season though, he needs to play more than a handful of games.

Wouldn't you think that so long as he is not injured and is looking relatively positive, he automatically gets a contract?

Or are you suggesting he would look elsewhere? Which, in my opinion, if he did, would be worse than Dangerfield or Ablett jumping ship.

I would be amazed if Menzel is not a (fairly ) regular member of the AFL team from here on. IMO he can't do much more than he has done .

He has had a full preseason , played a couple of good AFL / VFL practice games (cut above). Even if he is only half fit what we have seen is good enough to have impact at AFL level. Get fit while kicking a couple of sausage rolls in the AFL I reckon.

The most sensible thing i have read on here for a while.
Let him play.

I would think he certainly shouldn't get a contract automatically. He's missed far too much footy for that and is far too uncertain long term.

If he is put back in the seniors soon (i.e. this week), and can contribute well this season, that sounds a lot more reasonable.

It's not that he'll go anywhere. It's that if he has yet another severely injury interrupted year, I'm not sure another contract is warranted.

Yep - he must play. If for no other reason to decide his contract worthiness. I am confident as has been said already that if his knees hold up he will play well become a best 22 again and get a new contract.

Much as I love Menzel, can not agree with that.
Unless you are saying that from an aggrieved loyalty perspective- because he does owe the team big time.
But, from a team perspective, his peak is very flaky, and if ever there was a owaat edict, Menzel is the man.

Definitely from a loyalty perspective

I think its time for the saccharine to be put on the shelf. Menz has never had a chance like what he has got now , a seasoned fit mature body coming into play when we are about to play a couple of the lower sides. He should substantially add to his goal tally over the next two weeks or we will be a bit deflated imo.

Excuse my ignorance...what is this?
