Gigantic difference between suggesting there is a "tinge of Johnno" in him and suggesting he will be as good as SJ. Gigantic difference. Long way to go before he gets near SJ who cops the treatment week-in-week-out from the opposition something Menzel is yet to encounter.

Menzel is very good mover who at this early stage looks like he'll be a player. Let's not get carried away at this early point of his career or put him under unnecessary pressure.

Early stage or not, he made a pretty public statement against Collingwood. I'm expecting him to get either tagged or double teamed vs. Hawthorn.

SJ's gutsy kick to Ablett in the middle in '09 GF for the "toe-poke". Not many players would have the courage, skill or imagination to take that risk.

Sorry mate but he took a fraction too long and then kicked a high ball.
It's a day SJ will 'almost' want to forget.

The game was almost lost because of him

Still, it makes replays for saints supporters all the more painful.
So for that he gets maximum cred. :p

from the AFL site must of been from todays NAB rising star award.

Geelong trio Christensen, Daniel Menzel and Mitch Duncan compete in four kicking drills, with Menzel the winner 3-1 over Christensen. Duncan gets a doughnut.

Menzel takes out the torp contest - it's fair to say none of them is likely ever to rival Dustin Fletcher - as well as the hitting-the-post test and the lobbing-the-pill-into-the-ball-bin challenge. Christensen wins the banana goalkicking.

You could have got a kick in that game LS-V.;)

SJ has been copping eight and nine degrees of difficulty week-in-week-out and in the process repeatedly, and over a many of years, come up with the goods when it counted and where it counted.

As people of the footy quality and experience of Parkin, Barassi, Pagan et al have said players who have done little are far too often given kudos well beyond what they have earned. We'll know where Menzel stands in the scheme of things years down the track. If, after that time, he's repeatedly performed under pressure in games that count including being selected in many All Australian sides and picking up a Smith we can reasonably say he is of similar quality to SJ. Presently he's a player who has shown ability and looks very promising. That's the extent of it.

As for him being double teamed against the Hawks. Hmm!

Just in passing, he got one vote in the AFL's Rising Star award this year.

Whether the degree of difficulty was high or not is irrelevant, the fact of the matter is that Menzel presented as the focal point moreso than SJ - who would be the "obvious" danger man as per usual, what I'm saying is that Menzel will attract a lot more attention now than he would have prior to rd. 24.

Also I don't think there's a place in the modern game for a 125kg rover

That was a terrible kick though and woud have ended in disaster, if not for Scarlett being amazing

<3 Scarlett

Exactly

The pass was a floater. And Ablett didn't put his body in front of the ball (not from softness, but I just think he wasn't expecting Zac to make the ground up, so maybe he was a little bit too casual)

Scarlo saved the day, Ablett shot for glory but Chapman sealed the deal

He's still got a long way to go to even be compared to SJ, but at the moment he is looking just like him. He is only 19 and looks like he's been playing a few years. He's going to be a special player and will be the longterm replacement of Stevie J.

When the ball was on it's way to Ablett, i remember yelling out, "YES, GO!!", then a quick, "NOO, FU**" when Zac punched the ball, then when Scarlo toe-poked it back to Gazza, it was seriously one of the best moments ever. :D

Menzel marks the ball in the backline, score all tied up. Its 26 gone in the 2016 GF , its been a game this one. He's had a quite game has Dan the Man but as we know he's capable of anything.
He kicks over the man on the mark, its a bit of a pie floater to Bundy Christensen. Christensen's probably in line for the Normy today , he goes to mark but is spoiled by the late arrival of that defender. Its out of his hands ,oh my Go... hang on , now its Smedts he has read the spoil he puts on the boot and finds Christensen.
Bundys off now like last week's milk. He's running , running on to goal with Billy Smedts shepherding him. Bundy bombs to the goal square and Vardy flies. Hands to ball. NO. The ball spills and is scooped up by Duncan , he guns it to Motlop , he snaps. GOOOAAAALLLLL!!!!

The chances of see that "moment" again is probably astronomical. But one can see that big things are not beyond this new group , more please Mr Wells.

Did Bizzell have a cool nickname? Because the other two are The President and God!

I think he had a few, none of which were that great

"The Bizz" which was kind of obvious, and not that appropriate

And "He's ****ing Fiona Horne" and "Gary Ayres ****ed his career" both of which are more statements than nicknames and could apply to many AFL footballers

was picturing it perfectly while reading. Strange how players come and go as time ticks by and new faces who made mistakes in their first games didn't seem to leave a pleasing first impression yet in 18 months-3 years time they are cemented in our best 22 and the likes of Smedts, Guthrie, Christensen, Duncan, Menzel and Simpson all step up and create their own piece of football history. We'll look back in years time and forget about the absolute brilliance Chapman, Corey and Ling did on a weekly basis as the new boys overtake them as age does to us all. Very excited about the future and without getting too negative....I just hope they win it this year and really send a cheery o to Ablett jnr for leaving his brothers behind and taking money over a lasting Australian legacy.
