We can only hope that some of the other newbies on our list show the same sort of abilities , blossoming under our tutelage.

The more games we can get into the kids while we are string side the better.
Schroder would be one id pick out that we will be seeing debut next year. Guthrie , maybe Hyphen and of course Brown if he can stay fit.

Don't forget about Billie

Yep, I think against the Saints was the only recent game where he went forward. I wrote on the live blog, 'Reiwoldt loves Menz' after Menzel kicked a goal to put us up.

Look I'm unsure what Scott was doing with him, but, he does need to be around the goals if we are to be successful, especially if SJ plays up the ground or on the ball. He has great overhead skills and good goal sense.

FWIW I still think Duncan will be the better player.
Pretty happy with that thought to be honest. Because Menzel is going to win games off his own boot in a couple of years.

Have to bow to those who made the call on Christensen earlier in the year.
He is insanely good. Just such a natural predator of the pill.

I agree about Duncan, looks like an experienced senior reliable player already.

We need Menzel, Duncan and Christensen in our finals side. They provide exactly what we were lacking last year and surely we won't make the same selection mistakes 2 years in a row!!

Its bizarre how Menzel has been played out of position, however he certainly show that when put forward he is a real handful.

Love his hands. Just wants to grab the ball when it comes to him, and I love his athleticism.

Knows how to finish, too!

That was what i was going to say! so true! So, did Geelong get him signed for another 2 or 3 years?

Just love seeing christensen, menzel and duncan all playing!!!

I'll take that as a yes.

I dont really have to explain anything to you....especially given your brain snaps of late....but...

If you know what school Smedts went to, I suggest you go out there and check the School football captains....look at 1972..you will find my name.

My contacts at the school exist still....and both of them...one now heavily involved at the GFC....keep in contact with me and tell me their thoughts on players on a regular basis. In their opinion, Smedts will be a VERY good player.

Their opinions make you look like the amateur you are.

Frankly you need to take some idiot pills and have a good lie down for a while.

I think you need to stop being rude David.
You haven't been on the board long but the gradual increase in vitriol to many posters who have an opposing view to your own is disturbing.

Having said that. I'll still stick to the original call. You have no idea about Billie to make that call. It's all 3rd party information.

I hope you're right. Absolutely. But lets not make comments on something we haven't seen with our own eyes.

BTW. I'm right about Chapman. (well... not about not playing a final because he was massive) but there is something wrong there. I have no idea what type of injury comes good after warming up. I am sure you can help out there due to your running knowledge.

Please note: always happy to take a smack for being wrong. I don't have pride / ego issues. Never had have.

Well, folks are mentioning Michael Beasley. So I come up with some "basketball" ideas about these 3 yound guns.
Mitch Duncan will be our Tim Duncan: a solid component and a leader in forward/midfield.
Deniel Menzel will be Tony Parker: the play maker with magic skills.
Allen Christensen will be Manu Ginobili: always brings excitements and creates shot opportunities.

man, there is some ill feeling on this board, and in this thread lately...

everyone here is a cats fan, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. no need to get nasty or childish about it.

i have a few cats supporting friends in adelaide, and i love talking to them about the cats, no matter what the topic. one of my mates hates lonergan with a passion, and i disagree with him. were still friends, though.

honestly, the vitriol some people direct at others on the internet for the capital crime of a differing opinion is embarrassing sometimes.

we cant all know everything, and we definitely wont always agree.

lets just enjoy the finals together!

Is looking very good - and it especially important he plays well in the finals - as he adds something to our weakest area - the forward line.

If he can kick 2 goals and have a hand in another - add in SJ, Chappy, Pods and Hawk - and the forward line looks a lot more dangerous to me. Could be a player that makes a significant impact for us in the finals.

Still reckon Duncan looks as good as Menzel - and he too could surprise a few teams. But as he adds to an already excellent midfield his contributions maybe not be as noted as much as a goal kicker.

Christensen playing as a mid and forward has been first rate. Just needs to be a contributor in all games - and he will be a big cog in the system for us.

Then - we just need West to stand up and play out of his skin. From what I have seen he will be a competitive unit - but if he could actually play just a bit better thn that - all will be well.

Our rucks and forward line are the most likely lines to get beaten - so if Menzel and West stand up - we are in good shape.

I can remember talking to Brendan McCartney about Dan the Man Menzel sometime ago. He was very optimistic about his talent , said he came to the club with op without them really knowing about it. He had no doubt about him being a "player".

Can we see a parallel with Smedts? I hope so. But no matter how well he looked in the Falcons jumper or playing for VicC we won't really know to he starts to play against men at the superior level. Watching Caddy for GC reminded me of this , he looks talented kicked some goals but it will take him a while to adapt. He doesn't currently look the dominant player he looked last year.

So we really we need to just tone down some of the rhetoric , as far as I'm concerned all opinions on football talent are welcome. We all want to see Geelong players do well but we all have a different eye and have the chance to express one opinion It why we are here. Personal abuse for having these opinions is something we can do without. Just keep it in mind guys please.

I am a little worried that when he jumps for a mark his mouth is open so wide that he may choke on the footy!
(Otherwise loved his work- Not sure how he will go under pressure of finals though
Hope he plays and proves me wrong )

Thread was directed in defence mode for obvious reasons. The "potential" comparison was made when it was suggested by someone that to get Dangerman, we should trade Menzel. I agree, appalling. And I still maintain this teenager has the upside at the same stages of their careers as SJ, and watching the replay after the match, all the commentators, including Harley, who would know, repeatedly make the comparison.

Said this before, but I see absolutely no resemblance between Johnson and Menzel. It's almost as if the commentators feel they have to create hype about him. Then like the lemmings they are, the rest jump on board.

Menzel is a stronger mark than Johnson, and a longer kick. The one thing they do share is goal sense, but aside from that I can't see many similarities.

He's himself. Very happy about it too.
