I would like to talk about the merging and closure of threads.

I understand that sometimes multiple threads are created and this can pose problems, hence the merging of threads, but in some cases the 'new' thread takes a different angle on a topic.

I feel that sometimes the moderators are too quick in classifying a new thread as the same as previous ones. For example the new thread by Trade Draft which lists the positives and negatives of the new draftees. I think that he gave a lot of thought about it and I personally wanted to post in that thread.

Lumping many threads into one multi-thread with 100's of responses is not appealing at all. It is cumbersome and surely the unemployed are the only ones with time to read each and every post.

Please moderators can you hold off on closing and merging threads a little.
If somebody wants to start a thread about Luke Ball's left index finger, please let them.

I don't really enjoy coming back each day to find the same threads listed because others have been merged or closed.

Old threads become stale.

This is not a piss-take or troll or whatever, it is an honest straight foward opinion with the hope of a positive result.

Thanks.
Andy.

Andy,
We will rarely lump many threads into one multi-thread. The only time I can recall us doing it is during the circular MM debates of a few months ago which were badly derailing most threads on the board, and thus were "quarantined" for lack of a better word.

To address the second part, are threads 100's of posts cumbersome? Quite possibly. But that's the nature of the beast. Some threads will be huge, some will be less than a page. It doesn't make any sense to me to have duplicate threads simply because the topic has exceeded a certain number of responses.

Whilst it might be nice to see those duplicate threads in a slow off-season, it becomes completely unmanageable once the footy's back. We tend to allow more leeway than a lot of boards regarding duplicate/unnecessary threads, but even keeping in mind that it's the off-season, some forum organisation has to be carried out occasionally.

If someone has something interesting to say about Luke Ball's pinky, by all means. If the thread consists of nothing more than "Do you think Luke Ball has a pinky?", then it will likely be closed, as it's simply clutter. Yeah, a lot of it is subjective, but when it's a close call we'll leave it be. And if you do have beef with the closure/merger of a particular thread, PM any of the mods. I'm sure we'll be happy to discuss why it was closed/merged.

Cheers.

Too add to that there are a number of cases where a thread is opened to discuss something that is already being discussed at lenth in other areas. In this case merging the threads means that posters don't have to go to 8 different threads to see and discuss one point.

I don't want to sound flippant or dismissive but sometimes threads are started which a) are going over already well discussed and presently represented topics, b) Pointless musings without answer and c) posted out of boredom and with no merit at all.

This time of year in particular threads appear for the sake of appearing.

I know this sounds disingenuous, but it is true and we can do without those threads which go nowhere.

All trade and daft related threads could and should be in one single thread until we have a selection, then it is relevant to have a thread for each new addition for a time.

(I think most know what I'm getting at and MDC and the mods do a good job keping the front page tidy.)

A couple of the Mods on the main board are very quick to delete a Collingwood supporters thread or post (even if its in defence of our club) over and above supporters from other clubs. I will not mention their names for obvious reasons.

I was carded for calling Arocca an idiot. The Mod who carded me (after asking multiple times of why I was carded) told me it was because I called the poster an idiot! Yet a couple of weeks later when I noticed other posters calling a Collingwood supporter an idiot and worse words to that affect I asked the mod directly why they were not carded... with of course no responce, and no cards.

When you go to the main board always notice who a mod barracks for - it helps sort out the grey area.

I take a bit of a different tact. I think if a thread idea is sh!t it will die a quick death. It's certainly happened to a few of mine. During the off season I think guys like TD DTM make a pretty boring off season alot more fun and create discussion.

Having said that I think the mods do a great job on here - I havn't seen any really unnecesary thread deletions - although I think Daves pros and cons thread came close.

What, you don't like my daft threads now? :p

I think the mods are currently doing a fine job. The number of Luke Ball threads, draft rumour threads, MM threads etc. gets out of hand... and generally if there is obviously a new angle presented in the thread it gets to stand alone.

Personally I favour very minimal moderation but given I couldn't be bothered doing it myself I am happy to let those that can make the calls.
