Could you give me a bit of a rundown on the players that are bolded foj1?

Secondly, do you think clubs might look at say Joseph Daye and/or Lance Daly, some tall, rangy types in the latter parts of the draft..? Both have shown some glimpses of great footy, but haven't really put it all together into some consistant performances.

FOJ1 has mentioned Johnny Rayner in several posts. Great athelete - national 800 champion & top Aus 400m runner...has some serious speed plus ensurance......rep Vic in cross country, athletics and football (Vic metro U16 last year). Western Jets leadership group, school vice captain...but only 4 games with Jets TAC due to injury. Will be a smokey.... Very James Hird......will go late in draft just like Hirdy.

What I'm most curious about for the upcoming draft is what direction Knighta's gonna go in with our first rounder.

Its obvious we need a classy, hard working 'mid', and a key position Backman...

But hows knighta gonna do it all?.. Is he gonna draft Hartlett with our 1st pick and go in the direction of defence for the second.. or go with Hurley 1st and hope that with an outside chance a high rated 'mid' slipps through.

Just an early prediction:

1 Melb: Watts
2 WCE: Rich
3 Freo: Naitanui
4 Port: Vickery
5 Ess: Hurley
6 Carl: Ziebell
7 Bris: Hartlett
8 Rich: McKernan
9 Coll: Sidebottom
10 North: Blease
11 Syd: Suban
12 Adel: Johnston
13 STK: Yarren
14 Dogs: Cordy
15 Hawks: Trengove
16 Geel: Lisle (really don't know that they'll be looking for here)

Decent list. Few problems though..Tom Swift will go first round (Geelong are the ones I recon though). Yarran is too high for mine. Cordy will go 2nd round (no-one will bid a 1st rounder for him)

yea sounds alright, but wouldve thought carlton hav enough mid's. but why the hell would we want to talk about them?

I would like to know exactly what Lovett has done that makes people think he is an attractive option for a high pick. Apart from 3 or 4 really good games he has been a disapointment.
In 66 games he has averaged only 16 disposals , 1.1 goals per game and 2.3 tackles per game. This year his average disposals was up slightly to 18 but his goals per game dropped to 0.8 and he had 9 games that he did not kick a goal in out of 17 games.
If he is this game breaker that everyone thinks he is would it not be unfair to be expecting to average 20 disposals and kicking 25 to 35 goals a season and also be averaging around 5 tackles per games with his pace to run down players ?

Number of disposals do not matter, it's what he does with them. Number of disposals matter for inside players the most, they get the ball out to the outside types. Tackles are because of his attitude, he could chase them down easy but someone like Sydney or West Coast now with a fresher environment would be willing to take the risk to change his attitude and change him into the player they want him to be. He has shown sparks of brilliant performances, like McMahon, but can't put all of the pieces of the puzzle together as of yet.

you over-rate the draft !!!

here is a snapshot of 2004 (picks 10-20)
10. Chris Egan
11. Adam Thomson
12. Danny Meyer
13. Matthew Bate
14. Angus Monfries
15. Lynden Dunn
16. Adam Pattison
17. Andrew McQualter
18. Cameron Wood
19. Ryan Willits
20. Dean Polo

LOVETT IS WORTH TOP 20 !!!

here is a snapshot of 2005 (picks 10-20)
10. Marcus Drum
11. Shaun Higgins
12. Nathan Jones
13. Shannon Hurn
14. Grant Birchall
15. Travis Varcoe
16. Richard Douglas
17. Darren Pfeiffer
18. Max Bailey
19. Courtenay Dempsey
20. Paul Bower

mainly handy players, with a few good ones. (i like Nathan Jones)
Lovett > handy

Why single-out the 2004 draft, let's have a look at the 2005 draft...

10 Marcus Drum
11 Shaun Higgins
12 Nathan Jones
13 Shannon Hurn
14 Grant Birchal

15 Travis Varcoe
16 Richard Douglas
17 Darren Pfeiffer
18 Max Bailey
19 Courtenay Dempsey
20 Paul Bower

Bolded players are quality talent.

2006 "superdraft" (picks 10-20)
10. Nathan J Brown
11. Anrejs Everitt
12. James Frawley
13. Jack Riewoldt
14. James Sellar
15. Daniel O'Keefe
16. Mitchell Brown
17. Shaun Hampson
18. Leroy Jetta
19. Shaun Grigg
20. Tom Hislop

i think this really was a strong draft (famously earmarked the superdraft), but would still argue that Lovey is worth somewhere around "early 2nd round" in this field.
for a normal year (ie. 2008), i say he's worth late 1st round. roughly pick 14-16.

You can judge Max is quality from 4 games..?

I say we will draft Hurley...

Just realised we still had Tom Hislop from 2006... Should most certainly get something out of him next season.

I'm still very mixed between Hurley and Hartlett though, then you have guys like Rich, Naitanui and many others who could slip through to pick 5... A Very! Outside chance though.

Rich and Naituai will not slip to 5, both will be gone by Port's pick.

I'd bold Higgins as well.

Michael Still 192cm chf who is quickly becoming my player with a rocket in draft ratings. I see him developing into a very skillful hard running lead up hf in the mould of Okeefe/ Reiwoldt. He is bottom age and looks to be an absolute beauty. I think he will come into late first round consideration.
Tom Hill is a 198 cm bottom age ruckman from Northern. Unbelievable athleticism and has developed nicely this year. Looks like he could grow a bit more too. His kicking aint flash but he has pretty good hands which will get much better with body development. Lots of upside.
Rayner is a personal favourite of mine. Athletics background, represented Australia, Vice Captain of St Bernards, Hard running, clean midfielder. Shown more in 4 games than most have all year. Much prefer to Mitch Banner who is a dime a dozen type player. Rayner is on all of the real recruiters radar- make no mistake about that. I would roll the dice with him.

Thanks for the in-depth analysis foj1, much appreciated. :thumbsu:
