ALEX SILVAGNI ANYONE

191cm 92kg,

HM<

Interesting, lets draft a kid who still wont be right for another 2-3 years, dont go for an almost ready made one,

I'll have a small chuckle when he is playing AFL next year. :p

This is quite interesting actually. Lacked the desire to succeed earlier (from what I've read), but has been more keen on his football this year and had a terrific start to the season. Possible PSD pick up or rookie list?

Have been speaking to some of the people who watch quite a bit of the scorpions and they have said he has had a terrific seaspn, bar for a few injuries here and their, has played on a few 'power forwards' and done reasonably well, remember he is an 'ameteur' and does not play footy 5-7 days a week, if he were to be picked up in the draft, we would be able to bulk him so he would be right to play AFL level, and play full back, like his old man.

HM. the possibilities.

:D

Stephen isn't Alex's father.

I think you'll find that Stephen's oldest child is around 10 or so.

As far as I'm aware, they're very distant relatives. No closer than 2nd cousins.

However, I don't think you're too far off the mark with Alex's ability. Only seen him a couple of times, but it looks like he can play. I wouldn't have thought he'd be ready to jump onto a senior list, but he'd be a chance to be rookie listed.

i've been watching all the tapes over the past weeks and in my opinion mitch robinson is the standout overall and hamish hartlett also right up there. i don't think the top picks are as clear as previous years. most people saying watts, rich, natanui but i don't think its clearcut. for essendon's sake though hurley is the smart choice. due to injury i haven't seen trengove but he does sound talented - the bad hamstring injury has me concerned though. can we afford another injury prone player? a thorough medical would need to be done obviously - does he have any other history of injuries?

I thought Trengove did his knee so Id say we shouldnt be too concerned with his hamstring.

“He’s ruptured the lateral ligament in the knee and torn the hamstring from the bone, so it’s actually a break of the bone that’s caused the attachment to come free.
“He’ll be operated on Tuesday next week to deal with both of those matters.
“The prognosis is good, provided that there’s no surprises when the surgeon gets in – they expect 100 per cent recovery and about a three-month rehab, so we’d hope he’d be ready to do something by draft camp time at this stage.”

Hopefully he will recover fully.

i've actually had the lateral ligament removed from my knee and its not too bad (similar to medial ligament recovery) - the surgery on the hamstring is probably the more concerning aspect moving forward. given his age though assuming he would still be growing his recovery would be a lot quicker than the likes of lloyd etc. he may not be up in time for draft camp but it may work in our favour should he drop to 2nd round.

Part of the problem with an ACL knee injury is the fact that they use some hammy tendon to graft into the knee. This is what slows down the recovery a lot becasue you have to rehab two areas. I know from experince :(

I had mine done too (Julian Fellar). They can use either a Patella (knee cap) or hamstring tendon, although I think they may lean more towards the hamstring these days. Less pain in the front of the knee with a hamstring tendon re-co, apparently.

North Melbourne have recently added two new kids to their collection after getting them via the NSW Scholarship Program, and Craig Bird is an example of how these first in best dressed clubs can be rewarded. Scott Reed (COLL) & Ranga Ediriwickrama (GEE) are the most noticeable of signings that are going to eventuate when it comes to draft time this year and this pair in particular have shown some very good signs at under-age level, and look to have the makings of having handy AFL careers. These clubs can get these players at cheap prices and are trying to make the most of this opportunity. I ask, all Essendon fans that have an idea on this subject, why aren't we signing any of these boys from NSW..? Fair enough we're not getting anyone this year as the talent may only be a minority in NSW but I don't think we have signed not one person from that scheme yet and don't seem to making the most of these opportunities, are we looking into it and are you all for this program..? Thoughts..?

essendon do have guys under this scholarship but we haven't hit the jackpot yet. given only one club has had success with it thus far with craig bird i wouldn't be too concerned and its not surprising sydney is the club given its their own backyard.

Taylor Walker looks to be a promising player taken by the Crows under the scholarship program as well, just hope we can secure a gem sooner rather than later.

WCE look like they've done well so far with Ryan Davis.

We do have a couple going around, I think they'll be eligible in the not too distant future.

A lot of it probably comes down to resources. Most of our man power in recruiting, as it is with every club, is directed towards the upcoming draft. Picking the right guy for your side is hard enough as it is let alone trying to combine that with searching for 15 year old kids, who rise and fall extremely rapidly, all around NSW.

It'd be great to sign a few more of those kids, but it's not like other clubs have found a heap of great prospects from the scheme either. Ediriwickrama, Bird and Walker are probably the only top talents to be snared so far.

If that's the case, then that's not good enough. We are, historically, the most financially stable club - why can't we afford a couple of full time recruiters around NSW?

Depends if it's worth it.

NSW is hardly a goldmine for talent. Obviously one of the key ideas for the scholarship scheme is to try and convert talented guys from rugby, but numbers of guys willing to do that is going to be minimal given they've chosen to play rugby in the first place.

Aside from that, as is reflected in numbers of guys that are recruited from NSW, the talent pool is ordinary.

If a guy's a star, he's going to be heard about regardless of whether you've got NSW scouts and then it's about winning the race to sign him. Aside from that, it's about finding diamonds in the rough.

We would have guys up there. I just don't think we'd have a massive team of them as it really isn't as much value as it appears.

Agreed, but your post made it seem as if we were severely under-staffed in the way of NSW recruiters.

What would 2-3 full time recruiters really cost a club like Essendon?

Looking back on it, my post did appear as if we were understaffed. To tell you the truth, I have no idea what our allotment of recruiters is. It'd be a safe bet that we wouldn't have a regular feeder of information from the NSW region though.

As for the cost, I have no idea what a full time recruiter/scout would cost. I don't think that's the primary issue here though. It's much more about finding 2 or 3 guys that are good judges of junior footballers that are willing to travel all around NSW on their weekends.

The more likely scenario would be forming connections with guys heavily involved with the game in their particular regions, hearing back from them and then travelling up to have a look. I'm sure this is the system already in place and to get better in NSW we'll have to expand our contacts.

The average wage is a bit below 100k isn't it? Pay three guys 120k a year to watch games, run clinics and trials, and attend training sessions all year round. That's 360k + running costs (not ridiculous, maybe 40k a year), and we've got an above average scouting network for 400k. Those figures may be unrealistic, but 400k a year is not a huge chunk for a club like Essendon. That's 10 bucks from every membership, without denting our investments, gate receipts, sponsorships etc.

trengrove has no damage what so ever to his lateral ligament. In fact the internal ligaments to the knee were not injured at all. Injured his lateral collateral ligament which is outside knee joint. Hamstring also not torn just came away with small slither of bone which has fully healed. apparantly started rehab last week and will be swimming and on bike very shortly. plenty of time boys don't stress. all reports this kid will be back and ready to fire come pre season with whichever team is smart enough to grab a 197cm athletic jumper. from all reports this kid can read the play, is tough and according to luke darcy on SEN is capatin material in the making and could play 200 games plus.

Have been sifting through some old reviews and the likes of some of 'shifters wraps' from the AFL webvsite, have been thinking about getting a NSW/ACT scholarship player, Kade Klemke, not sure if he is a scholarship player, but he certainly can play, listed as 180cm, 76kg, a HBF/Mid who wins his own ball,is creative and uses it well, Mitch Frail, a 198cm ruckmen cum forward who was relatively good in the championships and also Jeremy Kirkwood, a 184 cm midfielder who was solid in the champs, was very good, hard at it and used it relatively well, am really thinking we try and jump on board the Scholarship program,

Thoughts???

Kade Klemke is a good, honest footballer who goes in for the footy at all costs, would be a nice pick up with one of our last draft choices, looks composed when he has the ball and isn't afraid to take the opposition on, even though he doesn't have outstanding pace. Would certainly worth grabbing if we could grab him cheap via the scholarship program. :thumbsu:
