Lol er Fair enough, I did mention I had only seen and read a bit about the draft
Yeah, had a bit of a read through the last few pages though, people seem to have a fair bit of a concern for Hurley's pace though? Just thinking that with the game getting faster and what not, that may be something we would have to assess before thinking of getting him?

you work to you strengths, not your weakness', time will tell if we become a good side, when the midfield pushes back and fills the hole, Hurley is an excellennt 1 on 1 player (Mal Michael), I have thought this right through, and IMO that Hurley could fill our Void at CHB and push Paddy back to FB. Paddy plays on the power forwards each week, be it CHB or FB, he is quick enough to play FB, has great athleticism to get a hand in, Hurley has been mentioned as being able to play at CHB, would be handy. just a thought.

Has a little bit of a pace issue, but we just need him basically to stay as a tall, strong figure to hold our backline together, an then you've got your tall, dashing types like Ryder & Pears running around him. Is quick enough though, no real concerns, just isn't the quickest and that is understandable as he is quite tall and has a strong build. Precise kicking and fantastic footy brain are his great assets, along with his one-on-one contests, wins them 9 times out of 10. Can also go forward, so is versatile, has kicked 6 goals for the Knights at TAC Cup level in a match before. Great prospect.

Mm sounds pretty good actually (Hurley i mean)
I like the idea of him sorta allowing Paddy and Pears to run and use that athleticism that they both have :)
Anyway, Im off, cheers lads ill talk to you later have a good one

This is why EFC should offer a player and trade up if Hurley is a priority.

I would be confident that Melb, WC and Fremantle have other needs but Port is the wildcard.

They have a need for a KP but could go for a local ie Hurley.

If that's the case, then that's not good enough. We are, historically, the most financially stable club - why can't we afford a couple of full time recruiters around NSW?

Simply because there hasn't been that many good players come out off NSW that weren't apart of the Bushrangers or in some cases the Pioneers program. Off the top of my head Mark and Jarrod McVeigh, Lenny Hayes Lewis Roberts Thompson are the only ones that spring to mind in the last 11 years. Even if Essendon had full time recruiters there what is to say that the kid wouldn't sign with another club. Craig Bird was availabe to be drafted in 2006 by any club before they brought in this rule. He was over looked

There was a thread on the main board a while ago, basically saying that Israel Folau would be an awesome AFL player. We could find one of these types of players, maybe a full back (i.e. who can kick) and is athletic, and it'd be worth it. There is a goldmine of sporting talent out there, whether they have AFL as a first preference, and $20k a year as a teenager, and the promise of football at the highest level, is tempting enough to change codes.

Ok, fair enough. Sorry for coming on a little strong...

Let's get back on the draft talk (Can't remember if he has been discussed yet, apologies if it has)...

Any thoughts on Ayce Cordy?

Plays the game well but i have serious concerns on him putting on enough beef to make it as a ruckman at AFL level. 77 kg is a long way off the mark.

lets go after sonny bill-williams!

Could we use lateral thinking to approach the first round of the draft.

EFC will probably end up with pick 5 or 7, but is there a way to trade up higher.

For example, if EFC decided Hurley is the premier KPB ( which is probably EFC's greatest need ), could we exchange a pick and player to go to 2 or 3 in the draft.

Therefore transfer pick 2 for pick 6 and offer a player.

Clubs generally know who the top 2 or 3 picks will be, so is there a possibility to offer a player for trade so the pic can be upgraded.

the price will be too high to draft upgrade in the 1st round when we might get what we want anyway. as long as essendon select before carlton they will probably get hurley as watts, rich, natanui, hartlett are bound to all be top 4 or thereabouts. if essendon do miss hurley then so be it, we then go plan B and possibly take Trengove who might be the better option anyway. I'm not too concerned about our first pick because there's plenty of players who will be available by their pick - mckernan and vickery are a couple of others. whoever it is should be quality.

like last year we got myers at 6 when i preferred him over masten who went at 3. then going back to ryder we got him i think 6 or later when he would have been first choice. just see what happens and our preferred pick may still be available anyway.

I am back after my one week enforced lay off:eek:
After our horrendous loss on the weekend our finals chances have been all but extinguished. The next 3 games could go either way but we will certainly receive a pick from 5-7. Hurley is back on the radar and a very realistic chance to snare. Richmond have Freo and the dreadful Demons so should finish above us. Carlton though have a tougher run home where they play North and Brisbane. They are a chance in both but will go in as underdogs. We need at least two wins to surpass them on the ladder. Will be interesting to hear the thoughts of our recruiters as we near draft day. Midfielder and a KPB with our first 2 picks please:thumbsu:

Re: hey if st.kilda lose the next 2.

I think that Port may well be leaning towards him, which means that we'd rather Freo finish higher, forcing Port to take one of the "holy triumvirate", most likely Naitanui.

God knows who Port are going to take.

Their recruiters would be miles off a decision to begin with, and they've got a history of going after a few left of field options, namely Travis Boak and Matthew Lobbe in recent years.

I have a feeling they'll have a pretty close look at Jackson Trengove.

Hey Ant, can you give us some run downs on any Div 2 players that you thought stood out, Cheers:thumbsu::thumbsu:

I'm not Ant obviously, but I'll give you a run down on some players that I thought have been standouts throughout the year off the top of my head in division 2.

Mitch Robinson (TAS) - Skilful midfielder that was instrumental for Tasmania during the championships, one of/if not their best player and led from the front. Good on both sides, nice change of pace, knew when to commit himself to the contest and was the main target through the midfield for their team. 1st rounder most likely.
Aaron Cornelius (TAS) - Tall, strong marking forward that was claimed to be the next big KP player a couple of years ago by many recruiters, meaning a top 10 almost a certainty. Has dropped off a bit on the radar, but still hasn't lost any touch in his marking and still is able to kick a bag of goals. Plenty of upside, but as every forward wants, he needs good delivery to get his game going.
Kade Klemke (NSW) - Solid, hard at it footballer who knows when to commit himself to the contest and isn't afraid to take the game on, even though he definitely isn't one of the quickest blokes out there. Great footy brain, would be very surprised if he didn't get picked at sometime throughout the draft.
Jesse Crichton (TAS) - Quick, skilful midfielder who leads a lot, just keeps on giving second efforts and isn't afraid to put his body on the line even though he has quite a small frame. Good potential, just looks a little raw with regards to his decision making, but that should come with a few more matches. Underrage from memory though so could be a good pick-up next year in the second round or there-abouts.
Charlie Sharples (NT) - Hard working HFFlanker/midfielder that knows where to lead and loves to kick a goal. Great footy brain, maybe a few question marks on his endurance, looks like he needs to build a bigger engine then he could use his good decision making through the midfield more often, which NT would've liked throughout the championships I'm sure and he could be the complete player. Capable of kicking multiple goals, so has potential there, but not to sure on him with regards to getting drafted though as people haven't really been focussing on him as of yet, but I would like to think he'd get drafted, albeit mid-late in the piece.
Justin Myers (QLD) - Goal-kicking midfielder springs to mind, loves the ball in his hands and likes to take part in most forward entries. Can kick multiple goals, good on both sides from memory and has a good footy brain though again, isn't the quickest of blokes but certainly would be worth the risk let into the piece no doubt.
Joseph Daye (QLD) - Raw KP player, has a fantastic upside, if he played consistantly I'd have no doubt he'd be a definite second round selection, though his consistancy lets him down so not sure where he'll end up going. Loves the ball in hands, elite disposer of the pill on his preffered side and can take a handy mark, but one thing he does lack though is accountability which is part of most team's game-plans nowdays.
Bart McCulloch (TAS) - Like the looks of this raw, ruckman/forward from Tassie, is very, very quick, was running past a few of the midfielders in the Champs and wasn't afriad to go forward and be strong, marking forwad option, and did kick a goal or two during the Champs. The only thing he needs working on is his positioning around the ground & his consistancy then I'd have no doubt he'd be a handy ruckman.

mitch brown from mentone grammar is a very very nice smoky. has kicked 80+ goals in all games he has played this year. he kicked 8 goals tonight against the APS and had no less than 4 opponents.

one to watch for

My argument is that teams must think laterally to make full use of the draft.

That is why I suggested trading a player to upgrade a selection.

Why cant u have a direct swap Player A for Player B .

Don't know why but for some reason I think we will pick up Steele Sidebottom, it just sounds like a very Essendony name as does Hurley though *dreams of commentator saying Hurley.. to Houli*

Dayne Beams was a standout for QLD as well. Has decided to enter the draft this year instead of signing for the Gold Coast as a few teams have already expressed interest in him. Anyone think he would be a good fit for us? What round will he get picked up in?

From the Couple of games i've seen I wouldn't be happy with using our first round on Hurley.

First round selections on full backs or rucks are notoriously skeptical and history suggest that there is always plenty of value in your second and third round picks to jag a ruck or full back.

I would love to see us get another genuine mid with our first round, whoever that might be.

Pears, Ryder, Daniher, Gumbleton, Neagle, Hooker all very young, developing key position players. Add another 1 or 2 kpp's with second and third round and we will be moving to a really balanced list for 2010 onward.

And if Hurley was simply a full back i would agree but he is not. He has the ability to play both ends of the ground and do well at it.

The games that I watched during the Champs, he didn't really dominate, but I only watched a few games not all. I think he'll get picked up, has good disposal skills on both feet and has decent speed, probable early third round draft pick, around there.

He can not only play on the big forwards, but he can also make a good, strong target in the forward-line, as shown playing for the Knights, has kicked six goals on an occasion. So versatile, that's what sets him apart from many other KP players in this draft.

Re: hey if st.kilda lose the next 2.

ive got to say ive never really felt like this before but im unsure whether i want us to win this week.. its riduluous i know, just i think if we finish where we are we will get hurley.. and imo he is a huge peice missing in our side...
