So Rance (pick 18) was arguably the best defender in last years draft and I dont think has played a game this year? Yet people think that if we take Hurley he will be able to hold down a defenders spot next year. We have a slow defender in Pears, do we need another one? If we didnt a defender so badly would Hurley be even rated top 5?

Was barracking for the Dockers and it wasn't only because they were playing against Collingwood. If we really are keen on Hurley, Fremantle winning tonight puts them into 4th position in the draft and allows Port to have the 3rd pick. Natanui may well be their pick and surely they will take him before Hurley. Freo will take a midfielder and then we get Hurley. Freo winning tonight may have a bigger impact on our choice then many of you would think;)

After a tough season for Essendon, pick 5 is a fair reward. A top 20pick for Lovett would also be deserved:)

I think we should look at packaging our second round pick + Lovett for a 1st round pick.

What do you think that would net us? I am thinking around the pick 9-11 mark. Good idea. Would you prefer something like pick 5, 19 (assume Lovett gets us this), 23 or do you prefer our first 3 picks being 5, 10, 39? May seem like a stupid question but 3 picks in the top 23 is not something to laugh at though 2 picks in the top 10 would make many clubs very envious.

For once in Fremantle's pathetic existence they pulled through for me. If we are looking at Hurley, tonight was a very good result for us.

God can you imagine that dude, both are stars :)
Also, about Pears being beaten by Polak its just confidence and positioning, he will get both with time.
Need to take a late draft ruckman too!
You people are as insomniatic as me!

I want Hartlett, I don't believe in the Hurley hype. We really need a star midfielder. If Hartlett drops to us, I would be extremely pissed if we didn't take him.

Against Coburg. Thats even funnier.

As RIG said - Pears is far from slow. Besides I think its hard to hit top speed carrying a hip niggle for the greater part of the year ;)

Every one looks slow in the VFL, the flow of the game is infinitely slower.

Who are we going to look at, in terms of ruckmen in this draft.

I wouldnt mind one of:

Jordan Roughead or
Jarred Redden

Both seem like they may fall through to possibly a third rounder position. although ruckmen maybe snappy happy this year, with alot more rucks going than normal IMO.

Also, Pears, is a young defender, has had injury problems, so has Rance, Pears is young, and is listed only at 90kg, Fletcher is 100kg, Michale 99kg, even some of the other better FB are around that 95-100kg weight, he will need some time to get some real meat onto his light frame, I agree with people on here, he will become a very integral part of our back 6 when fully fit and developed,

One more thing, if we dont get hurley, is it the end of the world, their are a few other players in this years draft worht looking at in terms of backmen for the future, the second best defender in Lisle, may be a late first rounder, but then again, may slide, we are only what 5-6 spots from the last picks in round 1 to our second round pick, Riley Milne, a 192cm FB, may be worht looking at in maybe the 4th round, 'the rock' of the SA defence in the champs was Matthew Martin, a 196cm, 100kg FB, looks like a really competitive player, could be worth a mention, and also James Klauss from Claremont, a 195cm, KPP, is really strong and is a solid citizen, could be worhty of a 5th round spot maybe, and also, my boy, Alex Silvagni, the Cousin of former FB of the century, if he is not on an AFL list next year, it is ludicruse?? is really coming along well, and is still young (21y.o) and is already developed enough to maybe play AFL next year,

Also guys, can you stop talking about our first round pick, we all know we are going to go with either Hurley, Ziebell or Hartlett, but we all know that, we all have our own opinions, why dont we start talking about other picks?? who are we going to pick up with our 2nd round pick, personally I agree with a couple who have mentioned Tom Swift, exceptional utility type, was clearly one of the best before a strong of injuries,

And on one last note guys, we are going to need to draft up to 8 players. now that would almost be a record, as we have delisted him, could we redraft Andrew Lee as a rookie, we have put too much time into him, and since we are really going to be searching for developed Key backs, could we maybe do this, place him on the rookie list as a mature age rookie, ala Jarrod Atkinson this year,

Thoughts.........???

We already have one developing ruckman on our list, do we need a second.

Personally I would prefer a veteran ruckman for a couple of years to push Laycock/buck-up Hilley.

I still have faith in Chooky, just needs a kick up the backside and a bit of competition for his spot.

I still think that clubs need 5. A number one. A couple pushing for the number two spot and a couple of developing rucks.

Yes we do, but, as I have said repeteadly, an ideal world would be,

Hille in the seniors

Laycock and another developed ruckmen pushing for the second ruck spot in the seniors, possibly Jeff White in the PSD, the other in the maggoos developing our kids.

Bellchambers and another young ruck from this draft, developing,

a few things you have to bear in mind, we need three AFL ready ruckmen, as if you are struck with an injury to one of your two senor rucks, you cannot rely on a boy to do a mans job, as we have found out this year, we need a third ruck in the seniors as he needs to help develop the kids in the maggoos aswell as putting pressure on the second ruck spot in the seniors.

And we cannot all afford the luxury of saying "Yes Bellchambers will make it, he just may, and I hope he does, looks a quite good prospect, but what if he doesnt, what if he gets some injuries, and we have to rely on Ryder to move from CHB, we would have to start all over again, developing a young 18y.o raw kid to play in the ruck.

we were found out this year with injuries, obvioulsy this was a one off year, but all the good clubs at the moment have from 4 - 6 ruckmne on their lists with another 2 - 3 players capable of playing in the ruck. this is where we are being found out bud, so, just have a think, this is why we should not get rid of Laycock, and also why we need another young ruckmen.

How we doin Ant, where we off to today, any other kids caught your eye in the TAC lately, wanna see who else Essendon supporters rate, am sick of everyone saying the same 4 - 5 players for our first round pick, we all know we are going to take one of 1) Hurley 2) Ziebell 3) Hartlett, who else are we looking at, any ideas, who do you like the looks of Ant.

if the trading period is quiet, then this is the way that i would like our draft to pan out:

pick 5: Michael Hurley

pick 23: Tom Swift

pick 39: Jordan Roughead (doubtful)/Jarred Redden

pick 55: Luke stanton/Luke Shuey/David Zaharakis

I agree j2d, although, Zaharakis will be maybe a 2nd rounder at most IMO, i like the look of both Roughead and Redden showed alittle in the champs, Stanton seems a real smoky this year, in terms ofwhere he will go IMO, some see him going in the 3rd round, others 5th round plus, Luke Shuey would be a great pick up in the 4th too IMO.

Going to see Eastern and Murray at Box Hill this afternoon :thumbsu:
Personally i still think that Steven Hill should be in the mix for first round.
As far as developing ruckman go Reddan third or fourth round or Zac Clarke from Oakliegh maybe fourth roundish.

should be ok then Eastern v Murray,

Who will take Hill though??

Since you mentioned his name, I have thought about it long and hard, and am not sure who wil take him in the first round,

How do you rate this years ruckmen, in terms of 1 - say 6 - 7.
