Name the players with footy smarts in our team. McVeigh, Lloyd, Lucas, Fletcher... with the exception of Lloyd, none had footy smarts from the get-go imo. They all developed at different stages, McVeigh took the longest. I believe those who don't draft him when the opportunity arises will live to regret it.

What a stupid comment. You think nearly everyone comes to the club without footy smarts, and then they are taught it? Mystifying.

At 194cm, how is he not big enough? Lloyd is 192cm and what a champion KP player he is.

Watts wouldn't slip to pick 5 anyway.

Everyone in our side has the basic footy smarts.That is not what i am talking about. Naitaniu has that but he is not a natural and that is not just my comments. There are a few around in recruting that see that as being a risk. He does not have a natural flair for the around the ground work. There have been a few smart young ruckam that have been able to break even with him in the ruck by changing their angles and not just allowing him to jump over them and he is an ordinary kick on the run. In fact he has to virtually stop to kick the ball with any sort of penetration at all.
To be totaly honest i think he would make a sensation Rugby leauge player. When he is running forward with the ball his peripheral vision and agility plus size suites it to a tee.
He will get drafted and he will more than likely be ok but there is a bit of a risk involved. He is not the automatic shoe in for greatness that some people seem to think he is.

He will be fine as a KP player. He has a rel footy brain which is a big plus becasue he knows where to lead and find the ball.

He will get drafted and he will more than likely be ok but there is a bit of a risk involved. He is not the automatic shoe in for greatness that some people seem to think he is.

There is not one player in the draft that you could make this statement towards. In saying that, NickNat has all the attributes to allow him to become a great player. He is a great calculated risk in my eyes.

He will learn football smarts, but you sure as hell can not teach his level of athleticism.

Because we don't have a late first rounder and he won't last until our second choice. He is also a chance to go top 10.

Merv, if you were in charge of our drafting -- what would convince you to take Trengove over Hurley?

What happens if we dont get Hurley, oh no, what a shame, what if we pick up the more versatile Trengrove (R/CHB/FB) what a shame isnt it, we should be happy, although, I wouldnt mind seeing Ziebell in a Bombers Jumper, seems to be growing on me alot, if Hurley is gone, then we should get Ziebell, their are plenty of other talls in the draft, and plus, next year, in an ideal world, will have Fletcher and Ryder as our two key backs and Pears as that thrid tall developing into a KPP, if we dont get a tall back, it isnt the end of the world as I have come to see, it isnt.

just a thought, I would still like to see Hurley in a bombers jumper, or Ziebell.

I get the feeling we might take Hurley over Trengove because of his booming kick and his ability to create play from the backline like Fletcher. From what I've read about Trengove his kicking is a bit up and down (although he may not even end up as a KPD if we take him)

He's taller, more athletic, quicker, has a bigger leap, can pinch hit Ruck and comes with a bigger upside.

I have only seen him on that youtube footage but foj has seen plenty of him and he knows what he is talking about.

7. Jackson Trengove 196cm 77kg Vic Metro

Trengove suffered a season ending injury at Metro training ripping his hamstring off the bone. I still rate him extremely highly as a good punter always looks at past form! Trengove was dominant last year as a bottom ager who took all comers including Kruezer, McEvoy, Lobbe, Simpson and McKenna to the cleaners playing in the back half or in the ruck. Trengove has a superb leap and hates to lose a contest. He also has a lot of upside due to his physical immaturity, lack of TAC footy (plays at PEGS) and missing most of this year. Should develop into a rangy CHB who can also be a mobile ruckman.

Jackson Trengove – 196cm, 77kg – Calder Cannons.
Another with an injury question mark after suffering a hamstring tendon injury earlier this year. Before going down with the injury he was in very good form. A tall defender with good pace who also had stints in the ruck in the TAC Cup. Had a great year last season and was one of the standouts. Good skills. Good pace. Great work rate and ability to read the game which is a big plus for a tall. Without the injury he would certainly be talked about as a genuine top 10 prospect or even higher. His injury may hinder his draft camp performance so the test results may not revile the full picture. He is good enough that you would certainly look at taking a risk with him.

I'm interested to see his draft camp results as i asked Ant about him and he raised a good point about his pace combined with some of our mids that lack some pace also and if we lose Lovett it could play a part in a choice.

Yep, sure does. His pace is very good, but probably not as pacy as say Hartlett or Blease, but still would be above average no doubt. Won an award in one the of the AIS tours from memory, for the best player during the series against Ireland, and IIRC, David Myers was very good for Australia against the Irish as well so maybe another factor there.

I've got mixed feelings about our first pick as well, would like most of the top kids. I have narrowed it down to two though, looks like you have done that as well. Two Vic boys, a slightly safer option I spose in Hurley & Ziebell, and they both have great ability. Whether or not they can translate that into the AFL could be a different story though, have to wait and see. All I can say is, 'Please no Kepler Bradley. Please no Kepler Bradley.'
