No key defender drafted this year is going to be ready in his first year. It usually takes at least 4 years for them to be AFL conditioned.

i'm 100% with ya on that. :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

haven't seen Hurley play, and wouldn't even know what the kid looked like. but historically, defenders (from top picks) don't play straight away.

we should consider players from other clubs.
Zac Dawson anyone? :D (Dawson would actually get a game at Ess).

Eww....

Hartigen of Bendigo gave him a spanking a few months back.

And Hartigen's just terrible.

And what if we pass on Ziebell and he turns out to be as good as Voss, or Hartlett turns out to be as good as Simon Black? We would being handing a premiership to our biggest rival.

Seriously, we don't care who Carlton or anyone else draft. We draft on who we think is the best available and fits our team.

I know but the thought of Hurley dominating in Carlton's backline makes me sick :(:(

At this point in time, Hurley still has a 50/50 chance (a long with all other draftees) of even making it at AFL level, so talk about him dominating is ridiculous.

Whoever we rate as the best player available, we will take. Whoever we choose i'll be happy with because i know how that Keane and Dodoro know and have seen a lot more of the kids than most, if not all of us.

I've gone through a fair few videos of Hartlett, Hurley and Ziebal from Youtube...

My outcome says they're all very good footballers but the standout is definitely Hartlett. He constantly wins his own ball and is very creative, clearance king, isn't the fastest guy on the field but definitely makes up for it in absolute class... seems a lot like Cotchin in many ways.

Hurley... Good backman. Reads the play very well, has a huge kick but can't really rely on him for accuracy 100% of the time. He's really good with body on contests but it looks like he'd struggle with a lead up forward though, might not be able to keep up with let alone make the diving spoil.... He could make an impact coming straight into AFL, but pretty unsure of what he'll bring to us for the future.

Ziebal.... Very good footballer. Though he doesn't always win his own ball he makes up with skill and been a carrier of the ball. Very good kick. Definitely knows where the goals are. He has a resemblance of Chris Judd but it'd take us a fair few years in the making to get a result like the following.

All in all... Hartlett for me... Hope for a decent defender to slip through for the second round.

Like daytripper mentioned above. The bigger guys take a bit longer. Which is why you get them early in the rebuild process... Then worry about the midfield. Hopefully they can all peak at a similar time.

Fwd- Gumby, Neagle, Daniher
Back- Ryder, Pears, ?

A solid KPB is what we need this draft I believe. We are likely to have another top 8 pick next year where we can draft a gun midfielder.

Wow by watching youtube you have all the answers :D
Best call the recruiters and tell them not to go to games becasue you can get it all from youtube. Looks like i will be out of a part time job :D

Essendon, if Hartlett is still available at pick 5, please oh please don't let him slide. We will not regret it, gurantee. Watch out for this kid.:thumbsu:

i've seen more than youtube (actual games) and tend to agree that hartlett looks a star but Hurley is also classy and fills a need so i'd go hurley-hartlett in that order.

There is no need to go so hard on him. Some of his points are ok and he has a right to say them. Didn't think you needed to advertise a part time job you have. Im beginning to question my judgement of voting for you to be a mod. You are being a little egotistical and self serving for my liking.

Hurley is ready to to play AFL footy for Round 1.

He has a mature body and footy smarts.

He could play the whole season but his form may be up and down like any first year player.

He reminds me of a first year Lance Whitnall.

Yaco, you may have just helped me make up my mind on Hurley if this is in fact the case:eek:

to appease the red and black fans you should have gone with dustin fletcher!

hurley has performed at a high level for 2 years in the u18s now and is more advanced than the average draftee. if any kpp out of this years draft is going to be playing seniors regularly it would be hurley. i'd say that he would be more ready for senior football at this stage than kruezer was last year.

what about sidebottom?
would we consider taking him?

cheers :thumbsu:

We would slightly consider taking him, a top 15 pick lock-in but hasn't got the natural class in my opinion compared to Ziebell or Hartlett. For the record, I'd be taking Ziebell with our first pick. Class written all over him, uses the ball extremely well and is as cool as a cucumber under pressure.

I will let the recruiting department select the players.

Hurley, HaRTLETT or Ziebell will be worthy selections, although I doubt that all of them will be available at Selection 5 .

I would expect Hurley to play the most senior football next year.

After all history shows that 4 or 5 draftees play most of the year.

You should have seen Sidebottom on Sunday. He was the player that turned the game in Murrays favour during the second quarter and was clearly best on ground. He had class, vision and excellent disposal. Kicked a few goals himself and set up at least 5 others during the game.
He looked every bit of a top ten pick.

You underestimate the jump from U18's to senior AFL.

The training alone is what kills most of them off in their first year. Will be lucky to play 8-10 games at whatever club he ends up next year and that will only be as a bit player at that.

FFS even Franklin did bugger all in his first year and Roughhead didn't develop until his third. And they are forwards !!!!
There are a myriad of other examples and that is not taking into account that Hurley is a key defender and these players don't develop properly until they hit 22 or 23.

Lets not weigh down the poor kid with expectations that he is meant to be the number 1 or 2 key defender in his first year. It just won't happen.

If the teams above us in the draft considered NickNat too big a risk do you think we would take him at pick 5?

I heard Gary O'Donnells thoughts on him and he was very unimpressed by what he saw.
