Merged Draft Threads - Part 3

I've been thinking about it also and aren't really fussed on Post or Lisle while I think Davis will be gone.

With Fletcher, Ryder and Pears, and backups coming from Hooker, Daniher and even Gumbleton who could do well learning how some forwards play. I'd be tempted to go with 2 smalls first up.

Pick 5: Rich, Hartlett, Sidebottom

Pick 23: Suban or A.Smith

Pick 55: Gaertner

Pick 71: Tough midfielder or small defender, add some muscle

PSD: Chris Johnson, good age, ball winner, afl experience

I think this is quite a likely scenario.

I don't think the club discounts the need for a tall defender, and nor should they, but if we go small at Pick 5, the chances of picking up a quality tall defender in this draft are pretty slim.

I think we'll see a James Strauss, Nick Heyne or Ash Smith land at 23.

Do Essendon really need to pick up a tall straight away, we already have both Pears, and Ryder, aswell as Fletcher if one of the forementioned gets injured, so for me, I say no, although I would like us to pick one up at some stage in this draft, although Knights has publicly stated that he sees one of Daniher/Hooker/Neagle as a defendive option, so that leaves us with, what, 5 - 6 options down back, I see that we could go after a ruckmen, as we cannot rely on Hille, Laycock and Bellchambers, as we found out last year, one goes down, we seem to stiffle our midfield influence, and get run all over, I see us going for a project back, like a Milne, or a Gaertner later in the draft, and topping up on mids,

Our need for a key back is still as great as our need for an elite mid. Fletcher should not come into the conversation given he has 1 year left.

In terms of our Key back prospects:

- Ryder is already proven
- Pears is very promising but has not shut down a key forward yet at AFL level.
- Daniher and Neagle has shown their best work up forward.
- Hooker was man-handled by a medium sized forward at AFL level, he has a long way to go until we can be confident that he could play against key forwards.

So that gives 1 proven, 1 promising and 3 unlikely key backs. Not ideal for a crucial position. My preference would be to add another promising key back which would possibly allow Pears to be a 3rd tall if things work out.

Idealy one of our first 2 picks will be used on a key back but if they are not the best availiable I am not suggesting that we should pick one.

By 'small' I assume we're referring to midfielder, so how would this equation change if that first 'small' was Ziebell? He's arguably the equivalent of any of the top mids likely to be available at 5 & also has the versatility to play KPP (although probably as a third tall).

Then we could genuinely go best available at 23 whether that be a KP or mid.

I just wish the draft was done and dusted.

The suspense is killing me!

Daniel Rich, Welcome to the bombers (hopefully).

Daniel Rich is my best case scenario!

Would be interesting to hear other peoples best case scenario.

Throw out logic and who will and who wont be there by pick 5.

It's starting to look like if Freo take Hill, which i don't think they will, then Rich will be there for us.

Of course that doesn't mean we will but i would advise Dodoro that he will have one very unhappy RIG to deal with if he doesn't pick him :D

If we go two smalls who should we get at 23? I really like Rhys O'Keefe or Heyne for that pick. What do you guys recon?

Hehe RIG!

well after Rich slides too us at 5, Yarran would then slide to us at 23 :D:D One can dream:thumbsu:

Seriously though, someone like Ash Smith would be nice, speed + nice foot skills, wouldn't mind Nick Suban but thats just going on what I've read/youtube haven't seen him play much.

Not sure Walters would be available, not sure he'd be what I'd want, we do have a lot of small forwards/mids. Suban wouldn't be bad, I would agree (sydney are keen at pick 12 though, so whether he'd be available is a question)

Would Sydney pick a bolter who isn't even their main need with their first pick? If they were going to pick a bolter, Schoenmakers, or Johnston (not really a bolter) would be the ones to go for, wouldn't they?

That would be the smart one, although Johnson would hardly be a bolter- he is rated a top 10 chance. Sydney rarely go tall with their first pick and Suban screams a "Sydney-type" midfielder. I do feel as much as they need quality KPP's, they will go small. Everyone thought they would go tall last year. Ideally they would hope Ziebell falls to 12 as that is a bet each way, a tall midfielder that could play as a 3rd tall forward.

Walters would be a handy one if he was to slip through to 23.

Damn right, if recruiters based their picks purely on potential/talent, he'd be close to a certainty to go in the top 10. But because of his height, he'd get shoved back a little bit. To pick 23 though? I can't see that happening. Certain first round pick in my eyes.
