Re: Yarran Targeted by Dons

You seem quietly confident that if Hurley's there at five we'll most probably pick him up, do you know something we don't? Or are you like most of us, taking some educated guesses?

I've been told that he is most likely our first pick.

It's still quite early though.

Re: Yarran Targeted by Dons

At the end of the game, one of the commentators said something like "Another solid performance by Ziebell", but i thought he was very disappointing.

He may have been carrying an injury, and he did some nice things but to me, he didn't stand out much at all

Yeah, understand where you're coming from. Did he still have that real class when he disposed of the ball? I didn't watch the match, was listening to it on & off on the radio so I wasn't able to keep track of what everyone was doing throughout the match.

Fair enough, I'm sure whatever choice we're gonna make this year it should be quality with our first pick.

He still looks absolute class when he has the ball.

Good to hear that.

Anyone know what kind of injury he could be carrying? Has been playing tonnes of gametime up forward lately, this could most probably be the reason because he's at best use in the midfield where he can deliver the ball onto the forward's chests.

Just read Sidebottoms stats on another thread:
32 disposals, 10.2 goals, 11 Inside 50s and 15 marks.
Can anyone tell me how his form was throughout the u/18 championships? Ive heard his name around for a while, but Ive always figured he was going to go around pick 10-15...not now though surely??

I didn't see enough of him to give you a definitive :thumbsu: but for me, just my personal opinion, of the small part of the game I saw he reminded me of Caracella. Good mark for his size, reasonable speed, very accurate kick for goal (minus the kick out of bounds! After 9 goals his leg was tired! :D)!

Has Orren Stephenson got any AFL history or can he be picked up as a mature age rookie? Ruckmen are always late developers. Or any Key defenders around the state leagues that could possibly be a mature age rookie

sidebottom reminds me of a nathan brown in his prime type. has the ability to play on-ball but is very dangerous up forward.

still want us to take hurley though

His form through the u/18 championships was good, but not as great as this one. He was one of the more consistent players in the championships though.

If Sidebottom goes in the top three, what are the chances of Nata or Rich slipping to us. Personally I am liking the looks of Sidebottom a lot!

He reminds me of a cross between Porplyzia and Nathan Brown.

He's had an amazing game, but you don't choose someone based off one performance.

He has been extremely good in all thre finals games not just one game. Obviously todays game was his best but in the final against Rangers it was his efforts early in the second quarter that got Murray back in the game and he had 29 possesions and 3 goals that day. Last week he had 21 disposals and was in the best three . He was good during the champs without dominating.
He had a steady year in the TAC Cup. He missed a few games after the champs through injury and it took him a few weeks to find his form when he came back. Becasue of his injuries he had been left out on a wing in a few games and not moved into the middle.
I really rate him which is why he was in my prefered 5 choices for pick 5 that i posted a couple of weeks ago.

I'm sold on this kid! Just wondering if you believe he will go top 5 now? do you think there is a chance we'll take him if he is available at pick 5?

I don't think he'll go top 5 ; Rich, Naita, Watts, Hartlett/Ziebell & possibly Hurley as well should still go ahead of him, but should be a certain top 10 pick though after a dominating performance in a pressure match you would think he'd earn a tonne of respect because of it. Dale Thomas I remember a couple of years back went bananas in the TAC Cup Grand Final, something like 30 disposals & 3 goals from memory, and he went in the top 5. Don't think it'll be the exact case with Sidebottom, but I'd be surprised if he slipped past pick 12. It'll be interesting to see his and a number of other people's results at the draft camp, could split a few players apart and change the order of preference slightly.

Don't be surprised. Big games over a whole finals series including two BOG performances generally lifts your stocks a bit. Particualry if you where already touted as pick between 6 to 12.
His efforts over the three games rate as high as any palyer i remember in a TAC finals series.

Indeed, thus why I said he'd earn a tonne of respect from today's performance. Even after today's performance, I'd be surprised, even if you might not be, if he goes top 5. Rich has played senior footy, Hartlett has played senior footy, Watts is a monty for Melbourne at pick 1 if he nominates and Naitanui is a massive talent, if he slips out of the top 5 I'll eat my hat backwards because his athletic ability is as good as anyones, and his work below his knees are inspiring for a big man. All he needs is some guiding from some past greats and I wouldn't be surprised at all if he could become a superstar much like Buddy, he should have media on his doorstep for most of his career. Top player, don't get me wrong, just don't think Steele will go higher than pick 5. Pick 5-12 would be my guess, if he goes top 5 then whoa, will he be a bolter.

Anyone have Ziebell stats? I'm not to worried about his disposal rate because when he touches the ball, he always uses it beautifully.

13 kicks (9 effective), 4 handballs, 5 tackles, 3 marks and 1 behind. A 'meh' game from him for mine, did a few things but was definitely hampered by an injury today and from whispers if heard, he's been carrying this injury for a while. Hardly played any of the final quarter today, really could do with a rest it seems.

This is what some people seem to not understand, while this was an amazing game he's been outstanding for the whole finals series and personally before todays game had him ranked at 7. Would not surprise me in the slightest if he's picked in the top 5. Bottom-ager, only 17, such an all-round player and to me, is the safest bet in the top 10 to become a productive AFL because he is so well rounded, not many question marks and has many many strings to his bow.

Thanks Cruiser. :thumbsu:
Yeah, if he sat most of the last quarter on the bench and didn't kick his normal 15 kicks a game, then you know something's wrong. He's still using the ball brilliantly as you pointed out, but just can't have the amount of disposals required to have a massive effect on the game. Shame for him, if he put on a 22+ disposal display and added a couple of goals to his team's score he could've really been the other shining light almost up there with Sidebottom yesterday, but couldn't get in the thick of things.

He has been carrying that quad/upper leg injury for a good 4 weeks from what i have heard. I watched him in the warm up and he could not buy a goal. Just one of those games where he went ok so you file it away and move on knowing he is still a class act.

Solves the answer then. Didn't think he was 100%.

I heard Rockliff also went pretty good on the radio as well, did his stocks rise a bit because of today's performance? He has kicked multiple goals basically all year in the TAC Cup and definitely has a good footy brain and brilliant goal sense. A bit of a nuggety type, like Porplyzia, but he more than makes up for that with his brains for now. Kicked some nice goals from the boundary today so has definitely shown he can also lift on the big stage.

He isn't really a high possession ball winner which is one of the things i think he needs to work on. While he is really damaging with 20 touches, imagine what he could be with 30+ touches. His endurance is lacking IMO even without being injured, this coincides with his disposal count. I'll be interested to see his Beep Test result because i wouldn't think it would be overly impressive. Struggles to get to every stoppage whilst playing in the midfield even for short stints.

I'm a massive fan of his as you can tell, love the way he plays but this is my major, probably only question mark i have on him right now. I'd think he'd play mainly as a forward for the first few years of his career because i wouldn't think he'd be capable of playing midfield in the AFL for even half a game IMO, may have a few short stints in the centre though. A few pre-seasons under his belt and he'll be an absolute handful to match-up on and will win games off his own boot, such a class act.

When he does develop his tank, he'll be an everywhere man, Mr Fix-it type player, hopefully he's wearing the navy blue. ;)
