Sidebottom is a utility in my opinion HFF, and a very good utility at that.
Can match up on the small, shifty forwards. Can provide run off half back and set up play. Can win the contested footy in the middle and as we watched on Friday, can go forward and provide a more than handy target.

But saying all that, I'd still take Hartlett & Ziebell over him even though he has got some really good attributes. Hartlett has played senior footy in the SANFL, gets a heap of clearances when in the middle and has pace to burn on the wings. Ziebell is more of a laid back type, uses the ball probably the best out of the draft, real silky, good overhead and doesn't get flustered under pressure, takes his time and 9 times out of 10 makes the right decision.

Wouldn't be unhappy with anyone in contention at pick 5. Even Hurley I'd be happy with, uses the ball brilliantly and rarely loses a one-on-one contest.

Sidebottom was so self orientated that it looked like he was shutting everyone else out of the game when he was getting shots at goal for his tenth, like, fev junior. lol. "its all about me" lol. oh well, he was still a very good player might I ad..

Looking at the footage of Hurley he reminds me of Mal Michael in the way he reads the play and spoils the ball. Although, he seems to have a more penetrating kick than Mal. For those of you who have seen him play is this a fair comparison?

I've been a Hartlett man the whole way, the entire way, and still believe he is the most talented and will turn out to be the best player from the ones available at our pick. However, i've jumped on the Hurley bandwagon. Guys like Hurley don't come along too often. There are a couple of players each draft who have the possibilty of being a quality midfielder, but we need Hurley. A Hurley/Ryder/Pears backline could be pretty formidable. I think we need another key forward, considering Neagle/Gumbleton are injury prone and they'll be our only ones. 1 more quality key forwards, then go for that star onballer that we need. Do that, we are a big show in the coming years.

So if you had the choice between Hartlett and Sidebottom, who would you go for? Before yesterday i would've said Hartlett but i just can't split them now.

I'm starting to think that we should go with a midfielder at 5, then pick up a backman later on. There's just so much midfield quality that will go top 10, but not much after 20.

definitely merit in this theory - you can never have too many gun midfielders and these are the guys that generally win/lose matches as it is where it all starts.

there basically are two strategies:

A:

pick 5 defender - hurley or trengove
pick 23 midfielder - zaharakis, hill, swift, heyne etc

B:

pick 5 midfielder - hartlett, ziebell
pick 23 or 39 defender - milne,senstock etc

i'm not sure either way as there are obvious pros/cons to each scenario.

I did hope that was the case Sawx, but he didn't show that enough whilst being at the club unfortunately.

If all the reports on him are true I would be very happy to get him there, would be doubtful though.

My worry is the problem of picking Hurley, are we lacking the star midfielder that we've longed for? Or would our future forward and back lines be enough to hold us together if they fulfill their potential.

I don't think we'd have a poor midfield but would it be in the top echelon?

I did hope that was the case Sawx, but he didn't show that enough whilst being at the club unfortunately.

He did show it, whenever he had the ball in open play he used it well, he just lost pace and struggled with the quick forwards.

That's the question I've asked myself and the answer is yes from my point of view. Sure Hurley would make our spine look good, but what good is he if our midfield can't get it down to the forwards?

We just have to be patient, you can't go recruiting Mids, then because they haven't become stars in 2 years, start looking for another one, that we don't even know if he will make it.

And as you say, we might also trade for one.

They've been named in our last few posts, but i think our 3 "possible" gun onballers could be Reimers, Houli and Myers. They are the 3 that have shown that extra bit to be something special.

However, Lonergan<Mitchell, rate lonners, but Mitchell is an out-and-out gun. Myers<Hodge, just have to stick with that, we have massive hopes on Myers, but Hodge is proving himself a gun of the competition. McVeigh might actually > Crawford, probably another one we could win. Watson<Sewell, both hard ball winners, not overally great foot skills, but Sewell probably has slightly better leg speed, can run away out of packs. Houli and Bateman, well 2 very different players imo, Bateman does not stop running, i've got high hopes for Bachar, but probably a bit of a different player to Chance.

I had Stanton where Houli is, but I really didn't want to leave Houli out.

You can't really say this with any assurance.

Lonergan has all the tools to become one of the better in and unders in the comp.

I think a lot of our supporters under-rate the group of kids we currently have in our midfield. Just because they're not playing like guns now doesn't mean they can't become guns in the future.

There's been plenty of positive signs from our budding midfielders this season - Houli, Reimers and Lonergan the stand outs

I think Myers would be better playing as an attacking HBF that can push up the ground.
