Welcome Mr Rory Sloane, TAC coaches award, a very good defender, cum half back flanker.

I love Rory Sloane but he is almost a replica of Henry Slattery and to a lesser extent Tom Hislop. I am not sure we need to draft that sort of player right now.

I would not mind another small defender, as Slats does get himself into a bit of trouble, in terms of putting his body on the line too much and getting injuries, I love that in him, but, Rory Sloane, has something speacial about him, a real leader, but, that is just my opinion, Sloane also as the abillity to play forward aswell, being named on a HFF in the TAC cup team of the year, I am a real fan as you can tell, but that is just my opinion.

I was all for drafting that kind of player last year however, I think Henry Slattery's come on enough in the second half of the year for that not to be an area we urgently need to address.

As you say, we don't necessarily have a great 'back up' for Henry, but the guy's in his prime fitness wise, and one would expect that we'll get close to 22 games out of him unless he has an unexpected impact injury.

I'll agree, slatts is really coming along well, but I just feel like their is something special about Sloane, he is a great runner, a gut runner from all reports, can find the pill a bit too.

a report from ant's updated profiles...

Rory Sloane – 182cm, 76kg – Eastern Rangers.
Small defender/midfielder with good defensive skills and pretty good pace. Played mainly half back or BP during the champs and did a pretty good job handling the opposition small forwards. In the TAC Cup he has mainly played midfield and is a good in and under player who can get in and find the ball. He is pretty creative by hand. The main thing that lets him down is his disposal by foot. He can be very hit and miss on a bad day. There is not much of him but he will give you 100% all the time.
He has form over two seasons in the TAC Cup so I think clubs would be looking at him later in the draft.

Could Essendon Rookie list Andrew Lee, he would still be on our list, he does have big raps on him, is a KP backmen, has been hit by injuries, but no one is going to give him a go, just thought of it then, that way we could go for a midfielder with our first round pick, and still be able to pick up a tall backmen later in the draft, just a thought, he is still young enough to be a rookie isn't he, under 23, i think.

thoughts.......

Yes Essendon could rookie Lee. West Coast had Beau Wilkes on there list as a rookie for about 4 years before he was up graded. The only trouble with Lee apart from not being able to get out on the ground that he from what I can remember that the few games that he has played in the last couple of years that he played mainly as a forward on as a backman

I just think that he may become a very good backmen, give him one more year (as a rookie) and see how he pans out, if he does well in the VFL, if rookied, then we upgrade him (if a serious injury comes up) and if he has a really good year in the VFL, then we could (as WCE have done this year -> Beau Wilkes) then upgrade him to the senior list. that is just my take on things, for all we know, Hurley may become a dud, injury prone, much like Lee, or Johns, but then again, a first rounder backmen could finally become a good pick up.

I was on the train on the way home tonight and in the MX sports section it had a short piece on Lovett and also about who Essendon is considering for pick 5 and they (Essendon) said Chris Yarren is very high on their list.. thoughts?

Better friken not happen. We do no need a lazy forward. I could not care how good he looks when he can be bothered, but I'd rather a player that puts in 110% thanks. Hurley, Swift, Hartlett, Tengrove (would not be totally against him at 5 actually), etc are better options. If we have pick 12 then Yarran may come into it.

Just posted by Cruiser23 on D&T board.. Interesting on Hurley if true---

This was the reply i got:

and are entered and updated as each group goes through so you only have one screen's worth of data to look at and at the end of the 20m sprint when all the participants had been through those 13 times were all that was on the screen. Sorry.

Watched Ziebell - from memory his times were above 3.00 secs - a bit slow but Sidebottom's were very slow. Hurley was a bit below 3.00, I think, and I was very impressed by him. Strauss was in the same group as Shuey, Swift and DeBoer but can't remember his times - sorry. Hartlett, Rich and Beams from that group didn't run. There were a lot of players around the 3.00 - 3.10 secs.

I'm sure results will be on the AFL website tonight.

Reading that, the times should be roughly
Ziebell was 3.00 - 3.10
Sidebottom was 3.05+
Hurley 2.95 - 3.00

Any chance of us going for Swift if he continues to perform strongly, and as I mentioned, what do people think of us rookie listing Andrew Lee, just think that of the 4 years we have developed him, thought we might give him one last go, with him being the youngest of the talls we have delisted/Retired, Michael(31), Johns (24), Dick was a rookie dud any ways, Chartres was never going to make it AFL level, I just feel that Lee still has something to offer us,

This would also give us more options to take in the draft, meaning, we would not HAVE to take Hurley at 5 cause we are short in defence, we already have Fletcher, Pears, Ryder, Hooker (Does he play KP back, I have always wondered), their is 3 talls who are still going to be around for the next 5 years, i would imagine, I just feel that we could use a Jack Ziebell, to be honest, I am hoping that who ever we go for, they do turn out to be a really good player, am sick of picking up players who take 4 years to develop:D, wouldnt mind a Palmer, or a Selwood, or a Ramanauskas of yesteryear. who can come and play AFL straight away,

Unless Rich falls to our pick we won't be getting a 'selwood' or a 'palmer' anyway. I do feel it should be Hurley but I would not be against getting my man Swift at pick 5.

I would not be totally against it, but only as PSD or a rookie selection. Pot luck with those selections anyway. At the least we know what we get with Andrew Lee.

I just feel we are going to be left a bit short, and with picking up Lee, it allows us to pick up one of Swift :D, Hartlett ;), Ziebell :p, with pick 5, instead of having to pick up Hurley with pick 5.
