Merged Draft Threads - Part 3

Just did my FULL phantom draft with about 2 paragraphs on each player up until the the end of round 3 and it was gonski just after 2 1/4 hours. :(

Had a link on the side of my thread which I was making which I used to read BF whilst I was typing my phantom (BF on both links), then click ok to post thread and then it said I signed in already before which I did because I spent too long typing it and my username already logged off automatically on the first link. :(

So I was logged on in one link and off on another and the final result anyway was that it got cleared. Took me bloody ages so I will try and find time during the weekend or I might have to do it sometime next week.

I totally feel for you mate. I have to use wifi where i am at and apart form the timeout ruptures there just the unknown connective separations that occur which you won't realise until you ping your message. Bad luck

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully you don't experience that same problem again.

Just bad luck I guess...

Any interest in Danny Meyer who has been delisted by Richmond? He was taken Pick 12 in the 2004 draft (2 picks before Monfries) and has been injury plagued up until the end of this season where he apparently started to hit some form in the VFL. Small backman that is obviously still young enough and we could do with another small defender.

I voted for Hurley when I started the poll but I've changed my mind to Sidebottom after his 20m sprint time.

This seems quite a common theme on this board at present. I don't quite understand it to be honest.

We already knew Hurley wasn't quick, and his sprint time reflected that. 3.11 seconds isn't ridiculously slow, but it's not quick at the same time. It was well and truly as expected.

Given his main rivals at Pick 5 did not excel beyond belief, how exactly does Hurley drop in the eyes of some for performing as expected?

I think the main reason for this is that in junour ranks its easier to get away with being slower the your opponent if you can read the ball well. However at AFL level people like Fev and buddy will exploit him being slow as they can read the ball well also (although they'll probs do that anyways). Also delivery is alot better making speed even more essential. A good mid usually stops good delivery making it easier for the likes of Pears/Ryder :)

The memories of Mal getting exploited by them taking him away from the goal square makes me question Hurleys ability. I still wouldnt be overly upset if we got him due to his ability to play both ends. who knows he might turn out to be a handy CHF/FF in the future. also the limited stuff ive seen of him makes me think he will be a good player, However i think its easier to recruit somone like sidebottom instead due to knowing theres a damn good chance of having a gun player.

although i do know where your comming from that we all knew he was slow prior to DC but maybe we were hoping it was wrong :)

p.s if he got what was originally posted (2.95 i think) everyone would be all for him so yeah make your mind from that

Does 0.15 seconds slower really make a difference. (in affect just means an extra .75 seconds over 100 metres.)

Its just like saying "oh, Jetta is 0.01 seconds slower than Dempsey, Jetta must be shit then"

If Hurley is playing on a forward who leads at exactly the same time as Hurley, and runs a 3.00m sprint(not even ridiculously fast), he has an extra .11 seconds (more than you think) to mark the ball. That's not even factoring in reflexes and reactions to follow your man.

In other words, yes.

Since I really CBF'd proving that .15 seconds makes no difference at all.

I'm just gonna say that you simply just can't rate a player from one lowsy statistic... Lucas is probably the slowest guy in our team right, and yet he's one of the best forwards in the league...

Last time I checked, 3.15 seconds from 20 metres isn't that bad at all... But If you start to compare him to guys like Lovett, Davey, Dempsey and Jetta... Then he's gonna start to look like a shlowmo!

Lucas doesn't have to chase after guys like Fevola and Franklin on the lead. Ideally you want a key back that is faster than the majority of forwards out there as its always the forwards choice when to go.

You want a key back who can read the play, position himself well and hold his own in contests, pretty hard to find an overly quick tall key defender.

The best forwards will always put on scoreboard pressure, you just need to be able to limit it.

Fletcher, Scarlett, Glass, Ryder, McPharlin, Merret, Hudghton, Brown, Presti, Williams, Thursfield, Croad will all disagree with you.

How many of them are overly quick?

Not saying they're slow but a lot of them struggle to keep up with the best, they just play smart.

Fletcher is/was very quick. Glass is very very quick.

Merret holds the 20m record at Brisbane.

Brown from Collingwood ran something like 2.9.

The rest are just as quick as the players they are playing against.

Brown and Merrett still get exposed by quick forwards, most of those players you mentioned their best asset is footy smarts and awareness.

Much more important IMO than having to be quicker than forwards these days which was my original point, if they were quicker and playing tall, they'd be in the forward line themselves

I know that it's not impressive, but midfielders aren't as reliant on their speed as a defender.

If they're smart...

Otherwise they're just useless, slow things!........ Then you have guys like Tambling who are fast... But extremely stupid footballers who are just crap.

As long as we draft a smart footballer, he'll turn out great. Having great speed, endurance and jumping ability is just a bonus!:thumbsu:

Because 99% of us know almost nothing about the draftees and are easily persuaded. I'll put my faith in the recruiters;)
