As I have said before, Pears has growth left in him! We drafted him at 191cm, so dont be surprised if after todays pre-season testing results are released he is around 193cm.

Knights on SEN this morning reckons were down to three players for pick 5, had good things to say about yarran when KB asked about him whatever that actually means. Also went on to say that all depends what he reckons we can get with pick 23.

Any idea of the three players???

Sorry guys, I must say i know nothing about this year's kids (other than YouTube videos).

Yarran is a small forward. I would find it strange if Essendon went after a forward, feeling that our defense and midfield needs more attention. Injuries aside we have a plethora of forwards and surely Yarran would be passed by us, unless he show potential in other areas?

is it fair to say that only Davey is our small forward, as Jetta (from all reports) was picked up as midfielder, Monfries plays as a (hate saying it) high half forward, leading into the midfield, so that leaves us with Davey,

alot of people say he plays as a small forward in the WAFL, yes he may, because he does not have the enginve or the body size to make a consistant impact in the seniors. over time he will puch into the midfield, has a nice size (height) and build (weight) to pursue a career in the midfield, and as I think Ant555 has stated, he played down back in a couple of the championship games, and used the ball extremly well coming out of defence. the article at the moment floating around by Ashley Prescott shows me how much of an impressive young man he is, not just his ability on the field, but how down to earth, how assured he is, how much he wants to make an impact in life. he really is going to be a good player.

People need to realise that, we are not all going to get a palmer, or a rioli, a Hasleby, these types of players that walk into the seniors and make an impact immediately, thats why everyone gets so disappointed with our recruiters, wait till Gumby gets a few games going, see how much he develops over the next 18 months, and then in 3 years time (fingers crossed) could be the most damging player out a CHF since Nick Riewoldt exploded onto the scene. The player we pick up at 5, is going to be a very good player IMO, be it, Tom Swift, Michael Hurley Chris Yarren, who knows, they all could be anything, but then all could be nothing, and this is where, the general public forget how fickle this game of football really is.

Even though you believe we don't quite have enough forwards, i feel this area is pretty well covered. However if, as you say, Yarran can play midfield and run out of defense, that makes me more confident in him. I was worried he would just purely play as a forward.

I feel we need a few more players that can play well in a few positions. That or a [potential] star midfielder/ KP backman, rather than just a one trick, small forward.

my draft observations - pros and cons of each with respect to pick 5.

hurley - pro - the key defender essendon need
- con - perceived lack of pace, is he really worth pick 5?

yarran - pro - sublime skills and mature body for his age
- con - is he worth pick 5? with jetta, davey, lovett, monfries playing similar roles well will he benefit EFC much as i don't think he will have the engine to play mid.

trengove - pro - tall, quick, versatile
- con - injury prone?, is he a kepler bradley mk2 with no real position having been in between defence and ruck as junior? worth pick 5?

swift - pro - awesome u16 mid, DC testing excellent, good skills
- con - knee injury stopping much play for 2 years is a risk, worth pick 5?

ziebell - pro - decent skills, reads play well
- con - in between player - is he a nowhere man ie neither mid or kp. is it worth using pick 5 on a utility?

sidebottom - pro - natural footy player reads the play well, tough, endurance
- con - query pace

hartlett - pro - silky midfielder with minimal weaknesses in his game.
- con - doesn't appear to have any

From my perspective Hartlett or Sidebottom are the safest options as pick 5 guaranteeing a quality player when you look at pros and cons. Personally i think Hartlett has more upside than sidebottom and looks a potential star. Thats who i'd be taking - Hartlett.

I think that Hartlett's main down side is his skinny frame but oh course he he will bulk up. I also think that McCarthy had a more negative take on him than any other player he has reviewed on afl.com.au saying that he needs to be more meticulous with his preparation. I would still be very happy to take him though.

So it looks set that we are going to go for one of Hill, Yarren, or Hurley, who would you most like to see, I think Yarren could make an impact straight away, but then Hurley could be the long term answer we are looking for, but then again, Hill could be icing on the cake to our young and exciting midfield brigade.

It doesn't look set on those three at all. It's merely media speculation. I doubt that the best journo with all of the contacts you could dream of would know what our preferences are. Hell, Dodoro's wife probably doesn't know.

Out of those 3 I'd choose Hill, but I'd rather pick Hartlett over any of them to be honest, but IF Lovett is gone unless he pulls a finger out of his arse he will..then Hill is a MUST!

If Lovett is gone? He's still signed to Essendon and barring injuries, poor form or another indiscretion he will play next year.

Essendon will pick up one of these and their is no evidence to specify that we have narrowed it down to three.

Trengove
Hurley
Yarran
Swift
Hill
Sidebottom
Hartlett
Ziebell

Other than Knights actually saying that we have narrowed it down to 3

that is true but still anyone of these guys listed above could realistically be part of this group of 3 as none of us know. i'm doubting knights or dodoro are going to reveal their hand to anyone in the media or on bigfooty! i certainly hope they don't as it could jeopardise efc's drafting strategy.

if i had to guess i'd say hurley and trengove would be more than likely in this narrowed group of 3 - the other one is questionable. we have a journalist saying its hill, some poster saying swifts family said he was going at pick 5 and so on. there have been reports that essendon haven't even interviewed hartlett - playing games as a smokescreen?? its all a guessing game.

last year at pick 6 it was pretty clear it was either palmer or myers but this year at pick 5 its very difficult to narrow it down. certainly going to be an anxious wait i must say.
