for mine pick 55 and 71 both hinge on what happens with pick 5. if they take a mid like hartlett with pick5, assuming hurley/trengove gone by pick 23 then they will be probably again take best available being another mid/flanker which would mean taking key defenders later with pick 55 and 71. in this scenario i see riley milne, zach senstock and alex stopp coming into play as defenders.

if hurley or trengove are taken at pick 5 then there is less need to play safety taking 2 defenders later. in this scenario i'd say they might be more likely to take another young ruckmen at 55 or 71.

You cant draft by numbers. It is a matter of drafting the best player available to a large extent I reckon. As the Big Footy Phantom draft shows you have to get the best player not plan to take a mid then a tall then a kp. I would hope we draft best player most times and perhaps address needs a little more in the rookie draft.

tend to agree hence suggesting we take best available with picks 5 and 23 then, given its generally more a raffle later on, suggest we may look at needs with picks 55,71 and 87(or PSD).

I'm not missing your point but what you are doing is changing the argument.

You wanted Banner and i said Knights wouldn't because he is a poor kick.

You then turned it around to the BF scribes criticized everyones kicking and i replied with players that are excellent kicks.

If others say they are not good kicks, well that's their opinion but one very few would share.

Hird also played in an era where disposal wasn't as important as it is now and secondly he made up for it many times over but by the same token he was no butcher of the ball like Banner is.

A person listed their 5 draft selections and chose Banner at Pick 55.

I merely agreed that Banner is a reasonable selection at 55, because IMO he could be developed as a stopping player.

I have previously posted that Banner's kicking is average at best.

I stand by my opinion about the hyper criticism on BF and BB of prospective draftees kicking efficiency.

Name me an elite midfielder in the AFL who has a kicking efficiency of 80% or more ?

IMO the two best kicks at EFC in 2008 were Ramanauskas and Reimers.

Rama spent most of his time in attack or defence and Reimers wasn't always in the midfield.

Zach Stegstock -191cm, 85kg – Sandringham Dragons.
Has come on really well after a bit of a late start to his TAC Cup career. Over age kid who has played mainly as a defender with a few stints as a forward. He has a good defensive presence and reads the ball coming in very well. Has pretty good pace and is prepared to back himself and run of his man to make the play. Skills are pretty good and he is a reliable kick. Finds a lot of the ball for a KP defender.
Good prospect for third round or later.

James Wall 198cm, 90kg - Casey Scorpions
Was on the Brisbane lions rookie list, but didnt quite cope with the rigours of AFL football, kicking was also a defficiency, and he has gone away and spent a couple of years working on this, he was a stone wall this year for the scorpions, working in tandem with another youngster Alex Silvagni to combine for a formidable back spine. A really good set of strong hands, a good reader of the play, and a really good nice size.

Alex Silvagni 192cm, 92kg - Casey Scorpions
Is related to the great Steven Silvagni in one way or another, plays same position, is slightly taller, and a little more agile. had a really solid year, and was probably in the top 10 of their B&F count untill injuries ruefully struck him down mid year, is a good spoiler, has a nice size to him, only down falls are, he seems to go missing for large chunks of the game, even if he is out their, also has some aggrevated aggression to his game, which i dont mind, although he does need to control this a bit more, aswell as his attitude. Would be a good pick up, although I am not sure he will make it.

Wayde Mills 196cm, 88kg - Brisbane Lions
Delisted big man Wayde Mills, has had some issues with his kicking, but he is a big bodied defender that we could use down back, even if it was a gap filler, untill Pears comes on, has had some kicking issues, but has done a reasonable job on some of the big names in the gap, namedly, Scott Lucas,

Zac Dawson 198cm 92kg - Hawthorn Hawks
Delisted by the hawks, and well down in the pecking order at the now premiership team, Dawson has the size now to be able to play at senior level IMO, he would be a risk as he has been playing forward for the second half of this year, and done really well including bags of 8, 6 and a couple of 4, take it, or leave it.

Going to throw a name out there from slightly left field.

Aidan Parker.

He's 25 now, so he's on the mature side of mature age recruits, but he's been an ultra-consistent defender for Subiaco in the WAFL, who have indientally won the last 3 Premierships. Been a regular in the WA State side for the last 2 or 3 years as well.

He's 194cm, a good build and reasonably athletic. On top of that, he's mean to be a really good team man.

As far as his AFL history goes, he spent 2 years with Adelaide and despite being upgraded midseason from the rookie list, missed out on playing.

He didn't nominate last year, so there's every chance he's happy at Subiaco and isn't interested in moving to Victoria, but if we're looking for someone having a big impact at State level, we could do a lot worse than speak to Aidan Parker.

The best of the mature options for me are James Wall who has been rookied at St Kilda and Sydney and Zac Dawson.

I think drafting a mature defender (23-25) is a good option as they will able to help with the transition from Fletcher and Mal to Ryder and Pears. Would we use pick 77 to do so?

have been sifting through alot of the information that has been thrown and bantied around, I have come up with what I would like to see EFC do, in a perfect draft.

PICK 5: Tom Swift, 190cm, 84kg, Midfielder.

Tom could be anything. has the right build and size to play in the midfield already, has come back well from a knee reconstruction, which shows he has the right attitude to want to succeed at the highest level. People also need to realise that it was only one knee reconstruction, this year was only cruciate damage, which didnt require a reconstruction. He has the nous to be able to play both inside and outside, and could be absolutely everything.

OTHER OPTIONS:
Michael Hurley - Didnt go Hurley as other options later in the draft.
Chris Yarren - Already have similar players to Yarren in Jetta & Lovett.
Jack Ziebell - The ability to not really have one position swayed me to not go for Jack, as we are looking for a pure midfielder, or a pure defender.
Jackson Trenrove - A very very close second IMO, but Swift is too big a steal to let slip.

PICK 23: Jayden Post 195cm, 86kg, Key Position Defender



Chose Jayden here, not necesarily as best availble but as needs here, as our next pick will be 55, was the leading contested marker and uncontested marker in the TAC cup this year, had a number of big games this year, is over age and might be able to slot right in, in the back six for the bombers. With key defenders in Ryder, Pears and Post, that is a very formidable key position backs.

OTHER OPTIONS: A key position player here between Post and Lisle, chose Post as he is a true backmen, Lisle has predominantly been a forward untill this yuear, when switched to defence. The thing thats swayed me, is, Posts all round game, his marking, his kicking is a feature, and the fact that he is an over age player who could potentially play next year as well.

PICK 55: Jarred Redden 202cm, 88kg, Ruckmen.

A formidable figure is Jarred, played the whole year in the reserves for his club side (Eagles in SA) and did not attend draft camp because of finals commitments, a nice mover, and one with so much potential still left in him, as far as ruckwork goes, he has a nice leap, and is very mobile around the ground for a big man, could potentially, i feel, play a CHB role as well, very much in a Drew Petrie type role,

OTHER OPTIONS: Could go for another midfield option and opt for a ruckmen in the rookie draft, but Redden at this price would be a real steal.

PICK 71: Liam Anthony 190cm, 90kg, Midfielder.

A midfielder from WA, is 21 and played most of the year in the East Fremantle side, is a ball winner and uses it extremely well, may not be the qucikest player, but his ability to read the play is first rate, may be a real steal here, and one we could take a chance with.

OTHER OPTIONS: May not use this pick and enter the pre season draft with pick 5, and may potentially pick up Chris Johnson before the blues, just a though, not a rumor. but my mail is, we will use this pick as there isnt much availble in the pre season draft.

ROOKE DRAFT 1: Broc McCauley, 201cm, 94kg, Ruckmen

AFLQ ruckmen Broc McCauley is knew to the game, and one who I am a massive fan of, have been in touch with the Southpoirt Sharks iver his development and they feel there is still plenty of development left in the the ex state soccer goal keeper, has played senior footy in the AFLQ and done really well, was one of the main reasons why they won the grand final last year, playing a leading hand against former AFL listed ruckmen Trent Knobel, for the Sharks win, his ability to win the tap out and follow up, is a major upside and one which sets him apart from the rest. A real possibilty IMO.

ROOKIE DRAFT 2: Sam Mcgarry, 186cm, 77kg, Midfielder
A rookie possibilty, Mcgarry is a midfield prospect with lots of upside, has a huge motor and is really good at working both ways. One I'd like to see in the Black and Red next year.

What if Hurley was best available at pick 5, and we still went for Gillies at pick 55, I think gillies may slide all the way and not get picked up at all, despite making the TAC team of the year at FB, and won the stingrays B&F, i think he may slide, although ateam like Hawthron or Geelong, StKilda may take a punt on him alot later in the draft, I dont think we would go for Schoenmakers, as he seems to be a hit up forward, much like Mcphee played this year, and I dont think Knights would want two of them in the squad, I am starting to warm to young Adam Cockie, seems like a real hard nut, who can play the game, a footballer before an athlete.
