Merged Draft Threads - Part 3

Damn right, if recruiters based their picks purely on potential/talent, he'd be close to a certainty to go in the top 10. But because of his height, he'd get shoved back a little bit. To pick 23 though? I can't see that happening. Certain first round pick in my eyes.

Walters may end up being the top player from the 2008 Draft.

From Matt Burgan's phantom draft:

5 – ESSENDON – MICHAEL HURLEY
Northern Knights, VIC, Tall defender, June 1, 1990, 192.5cm, 91.8kg

Another tantalising scenario looms at No.5. Will the Dons opt for a midfielder/running type or a tall? The prospect of securing Hurley – widely regarded as the best key defender in the draft – appears too good to pass up, considering that Mal Michael has retired and Dustin Fletcher is nearing the end of his stellar career. Hurley has been strongly linked at this pick and Carlton (6), and is unlikely to slide further. One recruiting manager regarded Hurley as one of the top two players in this year's draft. Two smokies have been linked at No.5 – Ashley Smith and Nick Heyne – although it appears too early for them.

23 – ESSENDON – DAVID ZAHARAKIS
Northern Knights, VIC, Small/medium midfielder, February 21, 1990, 181.6cm, 71.9kg

After being overlooked as a bottom-age player last year, Zaharakis now looms as a top 25 pick – at worse he will not slip past Hawthorn (34). West Coast has shown considerable interest and could even take him at No.18 or No.20. Aside from Essendon, Zaharakis has attracted strong interest from Geelong, Hawthorn , Melbourne, Port Adelaide and Richmond. The Dons will also look at Ash Smith, Heyne, Beams, Suban, Cornelius, Motlop, Redden and Dan Hannebery at this point.

55 – ESSENDON – LUKE THOMPSON
Geelong Falcons, VIC, Tall defender/forward, February 8, 1991, 192.4cm, 85.7kg

Expect the bottom-ager to get a crack in this year's draft due to his potential next year in the TAC Cup. Thompson has been linked with Essendon and Collingwood from the mid-way stage of the draft. Rounds, Jetta, McCulloch and Tyson Slattery will also be around the mark.

67 – ESSENDON – BART McCULLOCH
Tassie Mariners, TAS, Ruckman, September 23, 1990, 198.9cm, 86kg

There is a school of thought McCulloch could be anywhere from a top-30 selection through to a rookie. Overall, the consensus is the Tasmanian ruckman will get drafted. Along with the Bombers, Fremantle, Geelong, Port Adelaide, Richmond and West Coast have all shown interest. He is more than likely to be a 50-plus selection. Tyson Slattery, Cockie, Thompson and Hayden Skipworth are others under consideration. But the Dons are keen to add to their ruck division, with McCulloch being a sought after prospect late.

79 – ESSENDON – KADE KLEMKE
Murray Bushrangers, NSW, Medium defender, July 15, 1990, 180.4cm, 77.1kg

Most recruiters believe Klemke will be drafted and he has also been linked with Hawthorn and Port Adelaide, which have combined total of six live picks. Geelong and Richmond are also believed to be admirers, as are the Bombers. He looms as a likely 50-plus pick and the Dons would be well pleased to obtain him with their final pick.

55 – ESSENDON – LUKE THOMPSON
Geelong Falcons, VIC, Tall defender/forward, February 8, 1991, 192.4cm, 85.7kg
(Draft range: 45-79)

He can spend another year in the TAC Cup in 2009, but expect the bottom-ager to get a crack in this year's draft due to his potential. Thompson has been linked with Essendon and Collingwood from the mid-way stage of the draft. Rounds, Jetta, McCulloch and Tyson Slattery will also be around the mark.
Here in Geelong this kid has been talked up a bit.. a few people have compared him to Jonathan Brown at the same age.. I know comparisons are thrown about nilly willy these days, and Geelong people love their own products, but could be worth a punt as a bottom-age KPP with a late pick.

Wouldn't be disappointed with Hurley at 5. We need a tall back, and Hurley's one of the best young tall defensive prospects to go through the under 18s. We could certainly do with his kicking skills as well.

I must say though, I'd be disappointed with Zaharakis at 23. He just doesn't strike as a guy that's going to have a big impact at AFL level. In my mind, he needs a lot of space to execute his best work, and that kind of space doesn't exist at AFL level. He looks awkward on his left side as well.

Can't say I know a thing about Luke Thompson, but he is the type I think we need to attack at 55 and 67. A bottom aged player who has shown a bit with plenty of room for improvement.

I'm not necessarily against the idea of Bart McCulloch at 67, I don't mind what I've seen, but he strikes me as a guy that'll be more servicebale than anything else. I'd back in Bellchambers and Laycock as better prospects, and as such I don't think we have to attack our ruck stocks unless we do so 5 or 23 with a very good prospect.

I'd be surprised if we took 79, but if we do, Klemke wouldn't be a bad get. I think we could do with another smaller defensive option.

All the late money is for Hartlett to Port. They have given him an extremely thorough physical this week and all the signs are there. I'd be surprised if they took Vickery at #4. They took Lobbe (199cm & growing KPP) & Matt Westhoff (198cm) last year with their 1st and 3rd picks respectively.

I'm sure they didn't expect Rich to be available at their pick, so (like us), he'd have to come under consideration if he's still there.... wouldn't he?? Surely?!?!

I'm still a little sceptical over the talk of Hill to Freo & even Hartlett to Port, but if all this were to occur:

1. Melbourne - Watts
2. West Coast Eagles - Naitanui
3. Fremantle - Hill
4. Port Adelaide - Hartlett

I would be:
Ecstatic: Rich
Extremely happy: Yarran, Ziebell, Hartlett (if Port pass)
Very happy: Sidebottom
Satisfied: Swift
Suprised, and initially disappointed: Hurley, Trengove, Vickery, Hill (if Freo are foxing)

Is that meant to be content, as in accepting? Or contemptuous, as in you would express contempt towards the club if they picked Swift?
