Both are W.A boys. Are either of them like Myers, who wanted to get out of W.A? Or is one/both of them adament about playing in Perth?

I wouldnt want to waste a pick on a kid who was potentially going to leave in a couple of years...

I've heard Rich wants to play footy in Melbourne, don't know if it's true or not.

Both players are blue chippers but Natanui is simply too good to pass. You only have to watch his demolition job on Kruezer to know that you dont pass these blokes up. Laycock is ordinary and lacking heart, Bellchambers has surprised with his improved athleticism but is still no soda to make it and necessity will mean Ryder is likely to play back for a bit of time yet.
Rich is terrific but Myers is of a similar ilk. There are a lot of good mids in this draft many are more likely 2nd to 3rd rounders- Hartlett, Broadbent, Blease, Sheils, Swift, Yarran, De Boer, Shuey, Zaharakis, Heyne, Francis, Sidebottom, Suban, Weadon, Healey, German, Rayner, Strauss, Hanneberry, Hislop, Hunt and Banner are a pretty good bunch.
I would hope Essendon choose to go best player in all positions as we are struggling in all areas. Lloyd, Lucas, Michael and Fletcher are all above 30. This is where Essendons top up strategy has really hurt- Bottom Line.

Sorry guys, but as an outsider, there are only 7 or 8 players that I would swap ANY draft picks for on your list.

Ryder - a swap for choices 5 to 10 but not lower (Natanui, Rich, Hurley, +/-Yarran ahead of him)
Gumbleton - on pure ability, choices 3 to 10; because of injury problems, 5 to 10
Davey - a swap for 10 to 20 prior to ACL; now possibly 30 to 40.
Lovett - a swap for 25 to 35
Houli - a swap for 25 to 35
Stanton - like Houli and Lovett
Hille - a swap for 30+

Lloyd and Fletcher and Lucas are all legends of the game but have at best two good years left. Wouldn't pick them up unless they were bargains and my team were a bee's diaphragm from winning the flag.

Cannot judge last years recruits as I haven't seen enough of them. Some, like Myers and Pears, could fetch good trades but then again, both were top 25 picks anyway last year.

I am not biassed like the rest of you and this is just an honest appraisal and not a troll.

As good as Daniel Rich could be, a talent like Naitanui's is too hard to pass up on. He's got the potential to be a Franklin/Ryder sort of talent, and to have two of those in our team would be too much to pass up.

Naitanui for me.

Rich is a terrific footballer, but Naitanui probably has more potential (on top of what he's already showing in the WAFL) than any other player in the history of the draft, as big a call as that is.

Laycock’s not a sure thing as a back up to Hille, and Hille’s turning 27 before long. We surely can’t count on Bellchambers making the grade, and Ryder’s going to have to be a defender for a few years yet.

There’s a spot for a ruckman, and even if there wasn’t, Naitanui could rip sides up on the wing or wherever else.

Mind you, I certainly hope we don’t have the number 1 pick come draft time.

Glad we too Myers ahead of Rioli, Rioli is good but he plays exactly the same role as Alwyn Davey plays for us.

Talking about who we'd draft with first pick disgusts me and gives me a sick feeling in the guts.

I can't wait till the drafting rules change so we don't need this kind of debate 7 rounds into a season.

I agree completely with Kelvin.

What sets us apart from the rest of the AFL is our proud history from Day 1 (flag) to now. We have never had a time to be ashamed of anything, and going down the tanking road is not one that we should be contemplating at any stage, let alone round 7. I would be over the moon if we never got a top 5 pick again. We don't need to be shit to win flags. Where did the '00 team come from? What about the '93 team. They weren't the result of tanking, so why should we have to do it now.

Just a question - what did his 'demolition' job on Kruezer involve? Hitouts? Around the ground?

Ruckman these days cannot simlpy just win the taps, they need to back it up around the ground.

Whoever drafts Naitanui at #1 (if that is the case) will be praying like hell that his potential pays off because if it doesn't and Rich goes on to become a very good player then that club will have massive egg on face - not an ideal time to be the head recruiter.

Further, Naitanui will require bucket loads of development, I truly believe the club he goes to will determine what type of a player he becomes.

It certainly would help and when he stood out in the Champs last year it was the same as WA were the dominant side.

Will be interesting to see how he goes this Champs.

Is Natanui still a brutal tackler?

I haven't seen much of the juniors this year but i saw a lot of them last year and when i saw him his tackling was first class and he really smashed players in tackles.

Possible Trades/draftees

Just was looking over some of the information on some of this years draftees, these are some of the ones that I would be hoping come into essendons eyes. All being tough mids who can get their own ball, that use the ball well, exactly what essendon needs, I know myers is their, and Mcveigh and the likes but we can inject some more penetrative mids and watch out in years to come. Also added the inclusion of Michael Hurley a key defender from WA as Michael and Fletcher wont be there when we do win our next flag (Just my opinion, dont bite my head off)

Matthew Broadbent Midfielder 187cm
Woodville-West Torrens 1/08/1990 77kg
Broadbent is a midfielder who is damaging as both an inside and outside player. His best performances as a junior came in the 2006 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships where he ranked third in division one for handballs, equal fourth for hardball-gets and equal sixth in the handball-receives. In 2007 he played two games for South Australia in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships and also made seven appearances in the SANFL reserves for Woodville-West Torrens.

Claremont 10/3/1990 77kg
DeBoer bypassed the 2007 NAB AFL Draft despite being one of the leading junior midfielders in 2007. In 17 games at WAFL colts level for Claremont he averaged 25 disposals, 5 hardball gets and 3 clearances per game and had a kicking efficiency of 73% which was in the average category. At the 2007 NAB AFL Under 18 Championships DeBoer averaged 17 disposals and five hard ball gets per game.

Michael Hurley Key Defender 192cm
Northern 1/06/1990 88kg
Hurley is a proven performer at both ends of the ground and produced impressive numbers in the 2007 season. In 17 games for Northern in the TAC Cup he averaged 18 disposals per game playing in key positions at either end of the ground. When up forward he was always a threat, being a multiple goal kicker five times including a haul of 6. He spent most of his time in defence, however having six or more rebound 50s on seven occasions and averaging four spoils and two marks from opposition kicks per game. He is strong overhead highlighted by his tally of 29 contested marks, of which he took at least one in all games. He dominated at full back for Vic Metro in the 2007 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, totalling four more rebound 50s than any other player.

Subiaco 6/07/1990 75kg
Rich's impressive performances for Subiaco in the WAFL seniors late in 2007 stamped him as a likely high selection in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft. He has 16 disposals and booted three goals in the preliminary final before picking up another 13 disposals and two goals in Subiaco's grand final win. Possessing one of the best kicks of anyone his age, Rich ranked No.1 for effective kicks at the 2006 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships and has maintained an elite kicking efficiency in his junior career to date. He was named in the All-Australian team after the 2007 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships and has the numbers to suggest he's going to be an elite goal kicking midfielder at AFL level.

Tom Swift Midfielder 183cm
Claremont 6/07/1990 75kg
Swift underwent a knee reconstruction in April last year and as a result missed the remainder of the season. He is still a likely early draftee for 2008 after producing amazing numbers as a midfielder for Western Australia in the 2006 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships. He began the carnival with 40 possessions, followed up with 24 in the next game and racked up a whopping 45 disposals in the final game against Vic Metro. He led division one in handballs, marks, short kicks, contested possessions, uncontested possessions, handball receives, clearances and frees for and looms as a prolific ball winner.

Jack Ziebell Utility 188cm
Murray 28/02/1991 82kg
Ziebell is a utility who performed well in a variety of roles for Vic Country in the 2007 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships. He averaged 17 disposals per game with his ball use the feature of his play, hitting the target with an elite 89% efficiency. He laid the third most tackles of any division one player and will play for Murray in the 2008 TAC Cup.

As for possible trades I am a very big rap for the young Kangaroos defender Lachlan Handen and with Essendons intentions clear that we will trade hard, we should pursue him at all costs, free up Ryder, also we should chase Prismal, I have watched him closely for a couple of months now and he just sticks his head over the ball, in the VFL he gets his own ball, hardball gets, tackles. You dont get carried like that in an AFL team, he is just unlucky that Geelong are going through a Dynasty. Greg Bentley is at Port Adelaide, that seems a likely type, just isnt getting much game time and may want to come home. was high draft pick, so will become a very good player, could offer a second round or third round pick for him, or maybe straight swap Monfries or Dyson, On the talls front, was looking at Hawthorn, with Beau Dowler and Max Bailey both being likely types that are still young, could become very good players, Just my opinions.

Yeah, he still tackles hard. Interesting that last weekend we (swan districts) lost to east fremantle without Naitanui and Yarran. The only game we had lost prior was to Subiaco who smashed us, and East Fremantle hadn't won a game

not a great example. Hansen was playing at CHB as a junior, but hasn't shown anything to suggest that he'll be norths long-term CHB. the tall rangy wingman seems to be how the envisage him atm.

i've always had the theory that junior coaches will play their most talented players in the midfield or forward. on that basis, a permanent junior backman has a few question marks over them. granted, as the U18's has become more professional they have structured up better, but i still think you have more chance of finding a top KPP defender by drafting someone who can play at both ends with a bias to forward.

He is someone that we should go after, as he is notgoing to get s gigin the north side any time soon. and it will be an ideal type of player Essendon could use.

I have been taking a shine to him a bit more of late . Jobe does his job week in week out, these days he is drawing a tag instead of Stanton but Jobe actually finds the ball . Jobe's handballs often create space for our players but so often the reciever doesn't run into that space or they make the wrong decision with the pass.... We can build our midfield of the future around Jobe, all we need is some smart outside mids.
