Merv, who do you hope Essendon will pick up at this years draft, but who do you think Essendon will pick up.

It's too early to say but we really need a FB.

My preference would be a tall defender and Ruckman with our first 2 picks.

We have recently spoken with Trengove.

This is kinda random Merv, but are you inside the E.F.C by any chance, you are a very smart man and you seem to know a little bit more about the goings on inside the EFC than most others,

Am seriously considering we take Hartlett with our first pick, if we finish below port, and then try and snag one (FB) with a later pick, possibly a Jordan Jones maybe.

Could we go after a FB from another club, the WCE have an abundance of tall defenders their, one may want to come back to melbourne.

?? Thoughts...

I'm not inside the club mate.

It's very difficult to make any predictions now as we haven't had draft camp or the trade week yet, so it's really just all guess work now.

I'm not sure about trading as we need every draft pick we can get imo, as we have some massive retirements coming up in the next few years and you don't just replace those blokes easily.

Add in the 2 new teams and limited draft picks, it is imperative we get as much quality into our list now as is possible.

I agree Merv, we need every one of our draft picks, but in saying that trading players for other players may still be important for the team going forward because with a few of our best players retiring soon we may not have enough experience in our side once they're gone?

I had a look at the televised games this weekend and I liked the look of these players mentioned and to be honest I'd be happy with any of them.

Jackson Trengove, Michael Hurley and Jordan Lisle - I think either should be a must. If we think one can slip to our 2nd pick take. If they go up the pecking order, take one if need be.

Tyrone Vickery, Shaun McKernan and John Butcher - I understand Butcher is bottom aged, but these guys were all solid. Personally I would take Butcher if we could, but I think Vickery would get the nod over McKernan.

Hamish Hartlett - All class. If we think we can get Trengove or Lisle at our 2nd pick and this guy is available, snap him up.

Chris Yarran - Dissapointed me. Probably just had a bad day. Is he a bottom aged player? You could see he had a bit of skill about him. Didn't like how he kind of plays with the ball before he grabs it sometimes.

Aaron Cornelius - A pretty good player here. I don't think we need him but I think he will be a good player.

Sam Blease - Bit of Brent Harvey in him. Only got 12 or 13 touches in the game I watched but he had clean hands and a great burst of speed.

Steele Sidebottom - Reminds me of Lindsay Gilbee. The way he kicked the ball. Really used it well. I read he is best as a half forward, but I think being a half back would be a great spot for him.

Luke Stanton, Lewis Johnston, Mitch Robinson - All rangy types with varying types of athleticism. I would think Johnston, Stanton then Robinson would be the order I'd take them. Stanton had good composure out on the wing a few times.

Clancee Pearce - Did well but I think we don't really need him. Hopefully Dempsey gets himself right next year.

Nick Suban - Played ok. A few patches made me see why people rate him.

Will Young - I really liked his game. A good solid body and he put his body on the line in front of the leading target. At 192cm he may be a good option to take 3rd talls as a defender.

David Zaharakis - Looked good. If we finished higher on the ladder he may have come into calculations. Just a few others (Hartlett, Blease) I'd rather ahead of him.

Tom Rockliff and Ryan McKenzie - Both mid sized forwards who were apart of the dismantling of Tassie. McKenzie is like Medhurst a bit. Shifter Sheehan called him a barometer type and I agree. Is the type who could give your forward line a spark when hes going. I like Rockliff but his set shot kicking needs work. I don't know if it was nerves or poor technique. Would need to see him live to see if it was technique.

Tom Allwright (sp) from Tassie also impressed me and I wouldn't mind him as a late round pick.

Yes i do agree with that statement. But as the other fellow said, we may not have alot of experience into our younger players. the article in the Herald Sun today speaks of essendon not having much in the vacinity of 25 - 30 y.o players, this may hurt us in the next couple of years, just thought that some players. particulalry talls may be deficient and thus go after some, but, as you said, we may need draft picks, and plaus, if we trade some youngish talls, they still wont be developed enough, so go for the younger alternative of this years draft.

It's hurting us now, mate.

It's possible to build an excellent list without bottoming out if you draft well while you're up. We didn't in 1999-2001, so we are suffering now.

yeah, and plus the trades of carracella, Blumfield and Heffernan after our 2000 flag aswell.

Hurley would be a nice addition to the backline.:thumbsu:

In case this hasn't been brought up before, it came to my attention that Hurley plays for Eltham Panthers in the NFL, coached by Phil Maylin. Club colours just happen to be the same as the Dons. Apparently is very strong for his age.
