Rioli is a much more rounded player than both and will easily slot into a midfield rotation.

The similar types is a furfy. If Rioli was white everyone would have a different opinion.

Well Jetta was rated ahead of Rioli as a junior. I don't think that Riloi is better than Jetta. In fact i still think that they are very much the same. The difference being we have not been able to get a good look at Jetta becasue he came over here suffering OP and did not have the chance to show just how tallented he is last season. Rioli has better skills than Davey but i wouldnt say he is a better player of the game. What Riloi does better than Davey is finish off his work with goals more often.

Re: Terrible coaching effort Knight's

Ant, (it's me :D), Myers is hardly touching the footy in the VFL level. But the other bloke is getting 25-30 touches in the AFL level playing in the midfield. Wouldn't you take that right at this moment? (Not talking about 3 years down the track).

I love how you pop up when Myers doesn't have a great game in the VFL despite having two good games in previous weeks.

Was anyone thinking of D.Rich during the 3rd quarter against the Pies? I was :)...so called No.2 Pick. Say we had the No.2 pick in this year's draft, I will have a nervous break down. I can assure you, we'll pick a tall, like Hurley and pass on Rich).

Anyways, everyone had a shocker this week. Seniors and reserves and both coaches. Lets just forget about this week and erase it from our memories.

Port at home, we should be able to win. But I remember getting a couple of hiding from them recently at the dome, in the last few years. So I am not confident.

I wasnt thinking about ayone in the draft. This is why you get yourself all worked up. You focus in one someone early and when we dont get him all you wan't to do is complain. Its round 6 FFS. We are rebuilding and one of my comments before last years draft was whoever we take they better have bloody good skills becasue we have a lot of ordinary skilled players.
If Palmer was playing for us now and getting 25 times but only kicking at 65% then no i would not be happy. We already have players who can find it 25 times and spray it around every where. I like Rhys. I really do but i also know that Myers will be very good.
As far as picking talls go , how well will we be travelling if Fletcher and Micheal retire at the end of the year ? Will you still be looking at Rich knowing we will have nothing in the bag to cover two key defensive roles ?

Do you think if Hurley's available for us we should draft him?

Well we need a gun inside midfielder but we will also need to draft another tall defender. Fletcher has been carrying injures and playing for the past two seasons so he may finish at the end of this year. Even best case scenario i could not see both Fletcher and Micheal playing on past the end of 2009 which leaves us with Ryder and ..... Pears who will still only be 19 and someone we drafted at the end of this year.
Its going to be a tough call. Gumby could end up being our other tall defneder if he ever gets back on the park.
We are rather desperate to cover two spots.

Re: Terrible coaching effort Knight's

^^^ Well said Schopp.

I forgot about McGinnity... after watching him in the champs I can't believe we didn't grab him with a late pick or in the pre season draft.

Agree with you both here. I thought we should have taken him late in the ND . I thought he was a better chance of doing something than Hooker who is purely a speculative pick.

I'm hoping for Daniel Rich, but I think that will be unlikely. I would still be very happy with Hurley, Hartlett or Swift.

Re: Terrible coaching effort Knight's

I know its early but if Rich was available, you would have to be so tempted to get him no matter what you need. My preference would be:
1. Rich
2.Hurley
3.Swift
4.Hartlett

Dees will most likely take Naitanui and other teams who would be around the bottom like Carlton and maybe Richmond would probably go KPP

Draft choices

It seems many are starting to consider this years draft picks already  and it is starting to take over threads.

Lets keep the draft talk and questions in this thread.

Re: Draft choices

I doubt we'd be able to get Rich unless we finished bottom two, but if we do end up finishing that low (hope not) and pick up Rich then i'd be the happiest man alive.

Im hoping Tayte will continue to play the rest of the season down back for us and do well, that way we hopefully if we are in the position to pick either one of Rich/Hurley we will be more likely to come out of the draft with Rich.

Rioli seems to have a thicker body shape which will allow him to be much better in tackles than Jetta.

He already seems a lot more composed on the ball and kicks more goals highlighted by goal of the year just before.

I rate Jetta very highly and I think he was instrumental in our first win this year as I reckon his tackling or disposal resulted in about 5 goals for us. He was damaging against Carlton before injury. I am more confident of Jetta making it then any other player from last years draft. I don't think there's any problem with having Davey, Jetta and Rioli in the one side because they are good in traffic, are clean with their hands and can bring others in to play.

Seeing this is a draft thread now would we have been better of grabbing Luey and Rioli over the past 2 years. I know hindsights a wonderful thing but at this point in time you'd have to say we made the wrong choice.

No. You would say that. Others (including me) wouldn't.

Better than McPhee's goal?

Re: Draft choices

Better than McPhee's goal?

Probably.

It's very difficult to consider who we should be looking at in the draft at the end of the year. The fact is over the next 2 years we need to bring in a gun KP back and a gun inside mid because by 2010 the Gold Coast and West Sydney will be in control of the draft!

If we could somehow manouvre some trades and end up with Rich and Hurley well that would be simply fantastic...:p;)

Problem is we don't have any 'tradeable players' worth a first round

You don't just 'draft' gun key position defenders.

Name one top 10 pick over the last 7 years that was a defender prior to the draft.

Defenders nearly always come to their respective AFL clubs as forwards and are then converted to defenders. In fact a lot of the key backs going around have come off the rookie list. Maybe thats the best place to look.

Hence what Knights is trying to do with Johns at the moment. Glass and Rutten took at least 3-4 seasons before they got to decent AFL level and most good full backs don't fully develop until they are about 24-25.

Just because it hasn't happened in the past doesn't mean it won't happen in the future. Look at Nick Riewoldt when he started, playing as a KP back and starred, if not for his value up forward may have stayed there. And with more potential future forwards than defenders, someone like Hurley may be a good fit. Anyway my point was drafting a gun key position player that can be groomed into key position back, ie. Hurley.

Wishful thinking ;)

Hurley will be drafted top 5 and is a CHB

Re: Draft choices

I don't know anything about him (and I doubt that you do either except from what you have read - no offense) but if he is currently playing junior footy as a CHB I will bet $1000 he won't go top 5.

Fact is, any junior footballer that is any good either plays as a forward or in the midfield.

Defenders in junior footy are usually those who have been found wanting up forward. Clubs are not going to take a big risk on these guys especially in a deep draft.

He can play at either end, and well, should be a shoe in for top 5 from what iv'e heard.

Looked good last year when I saw him, has exception skills, booming kick, strong mark. Ant, is Hurley quick off the mark?, I only saw the 1 game of him and I can't remember?
