Re: Draft choices

I've got a feeling we'll end up with Tom Swift for some odd reason.

He suits us perfectly in theory; strong defensive aspect to his game, can win it on the inside as well as receive and can really find the football.

We'll only really see where he's at the Champs though. If he can prove that he's still a standout midfielder like he was in the U/16s, he'll be knocking on the door of the top 5.

If he can't, you're looking outside the first round.

Re: Draft choices

Problem is we don't have any 'tradeable players' worth a first round

1. Are they going to play in the next Essendon premiership?
2. Will the player perhaps be given an opportunity to win a(nother) premiership at another club?
3. Would their departure provide our club with the early draft picks required to help build a team that will see Essendon a powerhouse club once again, enjoying an era of the ultimate success.... not just another season of "close but no cigar"?

If you answer "No" to Q1 and "Yes" to the other questions, then they ARE "tradeable". Tough call, but if you take the emotion out of it, it's looking more and more like it's the right thing to do.

I'll probably get torpedoed for saying this, but I think it's the reality, unfortunately. Especially when you consider that, in only a couple of years time, Essendon and the other 15 existing clubs are only going to be getting the scraps left-over by the new teams entering the comp, after they've raided the top 20 or so young players each year.

Re: Terrible coaching effort Knight's

I know its early but if Rich was available, you would have to be so tempted to get him no matter what you need. My preference would be:
1. Rich
2.Hurley
3.Swift
4.Hartlett

Dees will most likely take Naitanui and other teams who would be around the bottom like Carlton and maybe Richmond would probably go KPP

don't know anything about these boys...could someone who does plzgive us a run down what sort of players they are and where they are from?

Re: Terrible coaching effort Knight's

You can find out about all the kids here

It makes interesting reading, Merv. I haven't seen any of the kids and generally don't follow them until after they are drafted but after reading that link i would have to say Rich suits our needs the best. I am not saying thet i want us to finish at the bottom of the table but if we do i reckon he would be a great choice. Not only do we need a good mid but we also need players with accurate disposals and Rich ssemd to fit that mould perfectly.

Re: Terrible coaching effort Knight's

Ditto Jimi, while he may not be as good as Cotchin in terms of disposals- few will be as good as Cotchin in that regard, he isn't far off and is clearly the best mid in the draft. I think we are a chance to snare him as I can't see us coming much more than 15th with our developing list.

Just be careful not to get too excited with those draft profiles.

They almost overwhelmingly concentrate on what a kid does well and not what he does wrong or what his weaknesses could be.

Remember, almost all draft picks (even early ones) turn out to be at best, just good ordinary footballers.

In the small amounts I've seen of Daniel, I wouldn't have said his distance is the best and his ability to kick to space also is a bit down.

His standard kick is the 40m stab, which is very reliable, but in AFL is less practical.

His skills are still very good, but I don't think they'll be as noted once he hits the big league.

One kid to watch in terms of skills is Sam Blease; very effective. Not only hits the target, but hits them with the right pressure. Mind you, I might've seen him on a day out.

Blease also has elite speed and your not wrong regarding his skills.

This is a top thread because the best kids in this draft appear to be West Aussies.

Hurley/Trengove, Gumbleton, Neagle, Ryder, Daniher and Pears would give you a great spine to build around. :)

I would rather a midfielder this year, not doubting that Hurley is special, but our midfield is seriously lacking class. A Daniel Rich or Tom Swift would go nicely. If we were to take a 'risk' I wouldn't mind Matt DeBoer

Dont think were in a position to take 'risks' anymore. We have to and we will get the list right :thumbsu:

It really comes down to how you define risk I suppose, but I think taking Matt DeBoer may be the opposite.

He's playing well in the WAFL, I'd expect him to have a pretty good Champs, by draft time I think he'll have done enough to suggest that he'll become an AFL midfielder. I reckon the doubt surrounding him will be in regard to whether or not he'll end up being anything more than average.

On the other hand, you've got Kieran King types who are tremendous athletes but possibly not tremendous footballer just yet. I think they're the risks.
