Re: Terrible coaching effort Knight's

Dont think were in a position to take 'risks' anymore. We have to and we will get the list right :thumbsu:

I think you've got to take risks in the draft.

The statistics of guys that don't make it are incredible, you're trying to find the diamonds and it's a very hard job.

If Essendon had never taken risks, we would've never seen Michael Long or James Hird.

Some of the best players taken were risky selections. Pendlebury hadn't been playing long; taking him at 5 was huge. Chris Judd was considered to have dodgy shoulders, pick 3 was somewhat risky. The list goes on.

Re: Terrible coaching effort Knight's

I would rather a midfielder this year, not doubting that Hurley is special, but our midfield is seriously lacking class. A Daniel Rich or Tom Swift would go nicely. If we were to take a 'risk' I wouldn't mind Matt DeBoer

Yeah ok you are right to a point. I just think that for at least the top picks we should try to pick the top talent, then we can take a risk or two.
What do you think?

I agree with you.

It's just important to recognise that overall, risks have to be taken no matter which pick in the draft.

Re: Draft choices

Hansen.

Pick 3.

Enough said.

not a great example. Hansen was playing at CHB as a junior, but hasn't shown anything to suggest that he'll be norths long-term CHB. the tall rangy wingman seems to be how the envisage him atm.

i've always had the theory that junior coaches will play their most talented players in the midfield or forward. on that basis, a permanent junior backman has a few question marks over them. granted, as the U18's has become more professional they have structured up better, but i still think you have more chance of finding a top KPP defender by drafting someone who can play at both ends with a bias to forward.

What players do you think we have to build our next generation of baby bombers around?

I was just wondering what everyones thoughts are of our young bombers and what players we will be building our next generation of bombers around. Who is our most important for the future?

Re: What players do you think we have to build our next generation of baby bombers around?

its clearly our last 3 top draft picks.

defence - ryder
midfield - myers
attack - gumbleton.

we will need all three of these to be damn good players and they just might do it.

Re: What players do you think we have to build our next generation of baby bombers around?

its only a matter of time before myers becomes the go-to guy in midfield like a luke hodge with his penetrating left foot. with blokes like watson and stanton around coughing it up myers just has to be the man.

Didn't see your game.
How did he go?

Pretty good debut overall, quality disposal, strong tackling and ran all day.

Ryder (Ruck), Hislop, Houli, Myers, Hocking. If you have a look at Hawthorn side atm they have an abundance of ball winners and big bodied players, probably our main weakness.

Re: What players do you think we have to build our next generation of baby bombers around?

The problem we have is that we ely on our oungsters to come on quickly while the vets are still around otherwise you are just trying to fill more gaps.
Ryder no doubt will replace Fletch
Will gumbelton replace Lloyd or Lucas I hope so but due to injury lets face it we have no idea remeber Johns was highly rated also and he hasnt lived up to the hype.

If we dont win one in the next 3 years we will be having the same problems we have now. We have been blessed to have Lucas Lloyd Fletch running round at the same time its hard enough to replace them let alone replace them and find 19 other players of great quality to win a flag.

If we are going to win a flag in the next 10 years it will have to be soon while Llyod lucas Fletch McVeigh are still there. Not impossible especailly if injury free. The fact that we have had so many injuries will surely fast track our youth putting us ahead of where we would be otherwise.

Re: What players do you think we have to build our next generation of baby bombers around?

Despite the circus acts we've put on the last couple of weeks, I don't think we should be too critical as teams simply can't compete with the injuries we have.

I'm actually pretty comfortable with where the list sits in terms of winning a GF in the next 5 years.

Defence: Ryder, Myers, Hisslop, Dempsey, Pears
On Ball: Ryder, Houli, Jetta, Davey, Myers
Forward: Gumby, Neagle, Reimers, Jetta, Daniher,

All these guys look to have the goods and coupled with the next batches coming through, will be a great bunch of footballers. I don't expect to see it for a couple of years but the future is bright, despite the poor start to the season.

Re: What players do you think we have to build our next generation of baby bombers around?

I Would add that I still think we are a star midfielder short at the moment. Still can't see an Ablett, Kerr, Judd et al coming through from the crop that we've got.

Maybe the focus of this years draft.

2 words Ben Cousins

Re: What players do you think we have to build our next generation of baby bombers around?

Defence - Pears, his body is going to fill out and once he fully develops is going to make a ideal KP backman. Is a smart player who makes good decisions when he has the ball. Quick and strong who reads the play well. :thumbsu:

Midfield - (Ruckman) With Laycock's poor form, I can see Ryder becoming one of the most dominent ruckman in years to come. Mobile, got a massive leap, probably on potential is our best palm ruckman. Has the skills as well. :thumbsu:

(Midfielder) Myers, I know he was drafted as a running hb flanker and he may still may play that role, but I would like to see on the ball delivering that last pass inside 50. Superb kick, awareness and an awesome sidestep, he demands the footy. Myers to Gumby could prove to be a lethel combination in years to come. :)

Forward - Gumby, apparently he is still growing. Mobile with terrific hands. Showed enough last year to suggest that we have a ready made replacement for Lucas. :thumbsu:

Re: What players do you think we have to build our next generation of baby bombers around?

Stanton, Watson, Houli, Myers <---- Mark my words these will be our fab 4. Are going to smash it in the middle. Houli will be the best of them all!
Neagle - Can anyone say future #1 essendon goalkicker of all time beating Matty's record!

These sorts of statements make me laugh.

Don't you think every club is looking for a star midfielder or do you we actiively enter each draft and go "Hmm, that kid looks like he's going to be the next Judd however that other kid over there looks like he'll be just average. Lets draft the average kid."...........

I would say now-a-days clubs draft players that are needed to fill a position. Hawthorn are a classic eg.

Re: What players do you think we have to build our next generation of baby bombers around?

Backline: Ryder, Pears, Dempsey, Nash, Myers, Slattery

Midfield: Watson, Stanton, Houli, Hislop, Lonergan, Hocking

Forward: Gumbleton, Neagle, Daniher, Jetta, Reimers, Davey
