I would rather the other options if our likely pick is in the top 3. Hartlett is pretty good, don't get me wrong. My problem is I am not sure he is worth a top 3 pick. We really need a A class genuine inside midfielder and I am not sure he is the one. I would go De Boer over Hartlett as well as I see him with more X Factor, however that may be from watching him more than Hartlett. If we have pick 4-6 rather than 1-3 then Hartlett becomes a option. However if that is the case, I'd rather get Hurley.

You talk such crap. You didn't even know if Hartlett was inside or outside midfielder yet all of a sudden you are an expert on him and think he's not worth a top 3 pick. Have you ever seen him?

Inside, outside...

I'm starting to think these terms are becoming overused. To the point where once you're labelled an 'outside' player then thats it - you can never win your own ball contrary to what actually happens on the field.

Perfect example was Houli vs Adelaide - I saw him evolve from someone who drifted outside packs waiting for a handball receive into a player that got 7 clearances.

Essendon needs young players who can do both, and have a good footy brain. IMO the footy brain is perhaps the most important attribute a young fella can have, you can't necessarily teach some one football instincts.

Up until that game he looked very much like an outside player though. He squibed whenever he had the opportunity to put his head over the ball and rarely got many contested possessions. Hopefully he does continue on with his form from the weekend goes in hard all the time, because he looked like a much better player when he did so. Don't know why he has been scared to put his head over the ball in earlier games, because its not like he hasn't got the body to back it up.

Fair enough...my point still stands though

Andy Lovett would be considered an 'outside' player but against Adelaide he hit the contest as hard as anyone and got plenty of his own ball.

Honestly, its all about desire, if you want it, you'll get it.

That is not right at all.

He has never has much confidence on the field since he has been at Essendon but it is slowly starting to come.

He used to get the ball and look for a handball immediately.
He still does this a bit but he is starting to run and kick more and is gaining in confidence.

As he gains more and more confidence he will win more contested ball.
Inside ball winners are not as valuable as a player that can win contested ball.
They are the ones that are worth their weight in gold, beat your opponent in the contest then drive your team forward.

He hasn't been hard at a couple of contests as he should have, but to say he squibbed it any opportunity he had to put his head over the ball or is scared is dead wrong.

He will never be a hard nut but he is smart and isn't a wimp.

I really don't see the difference between the two. If your not going to put your head over the footy when need be, then your a wimp in my books, simple.
Earlier on in the season, he wasn't going in hard enough for my liking, and this was probably one of his only weaknesses in my eyes but he's gradually developing into a more rounded player as he gains more confidence as you said. I don't expect him to be a hard nut, i just expect him, like any other player to put their head over the ball when need be, it's really not that much to ask, I wouldv'e thought.

It's off topic so i will make it short but if you think he is a wimp and its "simple" as you put it, then you may as well label half our team wimps and they are not in their second year of football.

How many times have you seen these blokes play?
None of these right now are A grade mids though Swift has been injured.

Suban & DeBoer are good players buddy, I'd say they're in the top bracket of midfielders available this draft...

You do think Suban is an A grade mid ?

Had 7 clearences last week....

You dont have to be in and under to win clearance's ;)
Houli is not the tough nut little tank some people presume him to be. His best footy is recieving the ball from those who are working hard in the pack. It has always been his go and it is part of the reason why he slipped down the draft ladder further than most expected.

I'm not sure if anyone's trying to make him out into a tough nut...but a lot of people assume that he's simply an 'outside' player...against Adelaide he showed thats necessarily not the case.

Honestly, does it really matter if they are inside, outside or even upside-down players? If a player is good enough, they will be able to win their own ball, or be in the right place to recieve the ball. A player with footy smarts will judge the situation, and decide whether it is better to stay out and recieve, or go in and try and get the ball themselves.

Look at St.Kilda. They have 4 great midfielders in Ball, Dalsanto, Hayes and Montagna. They know the game well enough to judge what they should do, and they are good enough to do both. We need to draft smart midfielders instead of looking for stereotypical 'inside' or 'outside' players.

St. Kilda's problem is they lack a bit of pace through the middle, some one who can break the lines.

Dal Santo goes missing too much as well.

The more time I have to think about it, the more Hurley appeals to me a worthy choice of our top 4 pick. We need one more key backman and he would fit in well. We have plenty of in and under midfielders, and sure Rich would add a touch of class, but a gun KPP will shore up our defensive positions assuming Pears can fill in at FB.

A spine of: Neagle, Gumbleton, Myers, Hurley, Pears has plenty of promise. Would be happy with either but Hurley would be my preference at this stage.

Well i have not asumed anything. I have made my "observations" from seeing him play in the TAC Cup on a number of occaisons as well as most of his Bendigo games last year.
He is most effective when he is recieving the footy.

You can call them stereotypical if you want but it is a simple fact that some players are not as good at finding the contested footy and they do not like the hard stuff. It is a simple fact.

Anyway enough about who we have got. We simply need to draft someone who can find the footy at clearance's who has clean hands and good skills. They dont have to be Chris Judd or Gary Ablett jnr all they need is some natural nouse playing in the middle and have good clean skills.
It is the number one priority.
