Wow, you really have no idea.

A player injures themselves once and then get called 'injury-prone'.

You sir, are on fire today.

Considering we have Gumbleton with a history of hammy problems, it is a reasonable conclusion. I don't want too many injury-ridden players, especially with our first round pick. Maybe 2nd round we can take a risk. A safer 1st round choice would be better!

Yeah, let's go with that same "safe" mentality that lead to St Kilda taking Ball ahead of Judd & Richmond taking Tambling ahead of Franklin.

I'd rather come 2nd last and pick up Daniel Rich personally!:thumbsu:

Re: Draft choices

Generally, if you've got a player worth a first rounder you wouldn't want to let him go anyway.

Brent Stanton maybe?
what about maybe Andrew Welsh, maybe, not first round but 2nd 3rd rounder, Bulldogs could be a possibility as they may need a small medium hard nosed defender.

Just throwing it out their.

Re: Draft choices

Stanton- NO. He is playing out of position, hardly his fault. He is a goalkicking outside mid being forced to play as a tagged inside mid due to our side having no decent midfielders.

Welsh- You'd be lucky to get a late 3rd rounder for him. Decent player, but harly one that a number of clubs will come looking for. About the same as Dempster to be honest, and that got a 3rd rounder with Adam Schiedder if I am not wrong.

I have only seen a couple of his TAC Cup games and in those his form was down a little on last year.
I did not see the Vic Metro v Vic Country game but from all reports he was reasonably good and was named in Metro's better players

Thanks Ant555 :thumbsu:

And I will leave it at that now Merv. No point in discussing Rich more, as to be honest we know how good he is. I'd rather discuss some targets for the PP (18) and our 2nd rounder (pick20). The first rounder will go to Rich or Suban. So who should we look for our 2nd rounder (lets assume Tom Swift is taken, I can see him falling to our PP though).

I'm not the one to ask as i have seen virtually nothing of the prospects this year in comparison to last year.

I have a couple of contacts that i consider to be very good judges, so will probably just talk to them about the kids and read the reports.

If we do end up with a pp then we should target Hartlett or Swift imo, hopefully 1 of them is still around by that time.

Hartlett is an interesting one. I think he'll go by the end of the 1st round as he has a LOT of X Factor about him. A better version of De Boer. De Boer could be one that slips to the PP. Swift is the one I am 50/50 on. If you asked us 3 years ago he would have gone no1 in this draft. But he has had injuries, so he may slip a bit. I would think a team like Port or Sydney may look at him as a 1st rounder.

I saw the SA game, that was a decent match actually.

You are full of crap. You come on here and say you saw games but did not know that they where champ games then you have no idea of when they where played and then the day after the game was played you expect us to belive you saw it after saying i was in Adelaide for my sisters wedding "that week".
What you just turned up at AAMI stadium to watch a game that you did not know was an under18 state game ?

Gotta laugh at the pwnage that is taking place in this thread.:p

How do you know how good he is? You've never seen him play.

You said you saw Hartlett play once and you didnt want him.
Why do you bother littleman?

I didn't see his first game. I did see his 2nd game as I went to SA for my sister's wedding anyway, I went to the game that week. My work allows me to do this as well. And I don't have a manlove for Rich..I just rate gun midfielders..of which we have NONE in our 22. We need Rich!

You didnt go and watch the game.
The more I read this thread the clearer it becomes that you are full of it.

We have not drafted the full picture yet.
Myers yes has shown a glimspe that he will be ok but he is also suited to a number of other roles. You would not wan't to simply peg him into the lone centre role. When he gets some body size he will be pretty good in the middle.
Hislop is not as clean through the middle as some think. He can fumble and is more of a crash and bash player than a find the footy and use nimble skills to get through traffic.
Jetta is not a midfielder. Have always questioned if he would have the tank to play a big enough role there.
Lonergan and Hocking play similar roles. They do a lot of the hard in close work but neither have super clean skills at finding the footy under pressure all the time.
Watson is the best at it but his skills and pace let him down big time and are a real problem.

I will not go away from saying we still need to find two or three mids that fit what i said.
I did not say they had to be the first three picked. We do need another tall defender. Not so sure that we need to go too early with another ruck given we took Bellchambers who i rated the best Tap ruckman in last years draft. Of course if you finished last you would be crazy not to pick big Nat.

Great observations and just about spot on. If Essendon get pick 1 or 2 Natanui or Rich are certainties. 3 to 5 are tougher to be honest in that range I would be looking tall and Hurley and trengove are the two I would look at. Hurley is solid but has been a man against boys. Trengove has physical maturing to achieve but clearly beat Kruezer, Lobbe, Simpson and McEvoy last year. Unfortunately has hurt his knee this year.
The wildcard is Chris Yarran. Does a lot of exciting things in the mould of young Cyril Rioli and the Burgoyne brothers. He is extremely clean with his hands.
Suban would be in the range of a priority pick if we get one. Not worth a top 5 pick thats for sure.

With Trengove having torn the hamstring off the bone, surely that makes him a very speculative pick.

Plenty of potential there, but I'd be nervous if he was our top 5 pick.

Chris Yarran's a tempting one. He's got a good frame and looks like he'll be a midfielder. He could be the devastating rover we've been missing.

Theres no way i'd use our first pick on Yarren. He'll probably start out as a forward pocketer and then could become a midfielder. Sounds like he has plenty of upside but theres always the risk he could be the next Wells or Tambling.
With our first pick i'd either use it on a natural and ready midfielder or Hurley, depends on what pick we end up with

FYI only:

Extract from AFL Website.
AIS/AFL Academy high performance manager Alan McConnell is confident Trengove will bounce back in time for the October NAB AFL Draft Camp.
“[The injury happened] in a mock pressure situation training drill with Metro on Thursday evening,” McConnell told afl.com.au.
“He’s ruptured the lateral ligament in the knee and torn the hamstring from the bone, so it’s actually a break of the bone that’s caused the attachment to come free.
“He’ll be operated on Tuesday next week to deal with both of those matters.
“The prognosis is good, provided that there’s no surprises when the surgeon gets in – they expect 100 per cent recovery and about a three-month rehab, so we’d hope he’d be ready to do something by draft camp time at this stage.” urgeon gets in – they expect 100 per cent recovery and about a three-month rehab, so we’d hope he’d be ready to do something by draft camp time at this stage.”

Looks like it will not make any difference to his 1st round chances. Tough kid and will go ok imo. :thumbsu:

Would love to get Nicholas Naitanui (WA) with our first pick, Mitch Robinson (TAS) with our second pick, Matt Thomson (QLD) with our third pick and Luke Stanton with our last pick (VM)...Gives us a ruckman to support Hille in a few years in Naitanui, Mitch Robinson who will add a bit more class and good ball use to the squad, Matt Thomson will bring a bit more grunt to our midfield and Luke Stanton is a bit of a smokey, is in the AIS squad and is reported to have a bit of class about him...Just a rough guide for what I would like from the draft from the half way point of the season...

That'd be assuming we finish last, and that's highly unlikely.
Melbourne won't turn Naitanui down.

Yeah, I'm assuming the worst in terms of position on the ladder, 16th...
We could still finish last, we're only 1 win above Melbourne on the ladder and with our horrid injury so far this year it might not bloody stop..!

Everyone knows about big Nat but your other picks here are certainly interesting.
Mitch Robinson , i saw him play against Bendigo in the VFL at the start of the year but he did not a lot that day. Also saw him play against NSW at Casey where he kicked a couple of goals. His disposal is pretty good and he runs all day. Did not win huge amounts of the footy but used it very well.
I have a DVD of his game against SA but i have not watched it yet.
I see he was named best in the game against Metro on Monday where Tassie got smashed scoring only 1 goal so i presume it was a wet day for that game.
Does not look too bad from the limited stuff i have seen of him and i have heard good reports about him. Has been named in Tassie's best in all their games. He is reasonably tall, a bit on the skinny side though.
Matt Thompson Have only seen him play once and that was in the second game at Casey last month against NT when QLD where comfortably beaten. He was close to the best for Queensland that day. He came into the game with pretty big wraps after having good form in the previous two games. There is not a real lot of him height wise but it does not stop him from getting in and having a decent crack at it. Not 100% sold on his kicking as he had a few average kicks in amongst his disposal. Has good hands in close and is good at hitting targets by hand. A bit hard to judge on one game but in the game against NSW at the MCG that i watched on DVD he looked pretty good as well. He is not overly quick. Tackles well from what i have seen. Runs all day.
