I'd take almost everyone ahead of Yarran for our first pick at least. We have other areas to address first. If we wanted a small forward- Collard was available last year. I am not saying we should or should not have picked him up. I prefer midfielders this year, although I wouldn't be entirely against Hurley at pick 3 and Tom Swift at 18 or 20.

Correct me if im wrong, but I can't remember Collard kicking that many goals at junior levels. He was more of a Leroy Jetta IIRC.

We need a quality small forward who can kick goals, not one of those small forwards that just applies pressure and crumbs the odd ball here and there without kicking too many goals.

Ebert, McKinley, Brad Johnson, Medhurst are those types of small forwards we need if we were going to get one, not just another Davey or Wonameri.

Not all small forwards are the same, or play the same role.

Reimers played that role quite successfully in the preseason I think he kicked 10 goals in 4 games. Alittle surprised he didn't continue that role in once the season started.

Yarran sounds exactly like the guy we need. Someone that can do some scoreboard damage. Maybe he could move into the middle like Ablett jnr and become a complete player.

We've drafted mids in Myers, Hislop, Lonergan, Houli, Jetta over the past 3 years. These guys need a chance to develop and become really good players.

You can't keep on drafting the same player and hope he becomes elite in the first year - Judd, Selwood

We need a forward/mid goalkicker type with clean hands and another defender.

Nicely said KS.
If he is in the mould of the Burgoyne boys, I would not complain.

My order of preference as to who to draft with our first pick in a short top 5 list are:
1. Naitanui
2. Rich
3. Hurley
4. Suban
5. Hartlett

I thought he did aswell, but since he's been moved into the midfield/half back he's looked very good. He adds a bit of agression into the middle, and gives us a bit of run through there aswell, would definately like to see him continue to play there and hopefully he develops into a goal kicking midfielder like Aker was at the Lions.

As Kelvin said, we've recruited alot of mids over the past few years, and we need to give them a bit of time to develop into these gun players that we've been needing. Instead of just recruiting more and more and hoping they'll step straight up and become gun players within a few years.

We definately need a key defender aswell as dangerous skillfull small forward, who can kick bags of goals, aswell as setting them up and crumbing them.
But as iv'e said before, I don't like the idea of using a top 3/5 pick on a defender, which is why im leaning towards getting Yarran in this years draft.

Its an indictment on todays football culture that more is known about a potential draftee than a player who is already on somebodys list.

Rubbish. How many supporters out there do you think know all 650+ players and rookies on every team. It is natural in any sport to have a keen interest in the next batch of players. Most NBA and NFL fans know who the stars are coming through the feeder systems, same as all sports.
It is not an indictment at all. I certainly don't know every player drafted last year.

IMO picking a small forward so high up is more risky than a defender. Also I would like to see Jetta spent up forward permentantly, he seemed so creative when working in tandem with Davey early last year and the start of this

We may have drafted mids but apart from Myers are any A Class midfielders? Not sure to be honest, Houli maybe but we need 2-3 real A Class mids. Yarran is a talent for sure but there are doubts as to whether he'll cut it as a midfielder. Paying pick 3-4 for a small crumbing forward (as good as he is) is way over the odds. Just an opinion, but I'd be leaning towards a midfielder, if not I'd take Hurley before Yarran.

Apart from Johnson and he is a great player no doubt, I wouldn't pay pick 3 for any of those. If we are so desperate for a small forward use our PP for one!

But how are you so sure that Yarren will only be a crumber? He wouldn't go top 10 if the clubs didn't think he could ever play midfield. You've been going on and on about how you don't want him, but how many times have you actually seen him play?

It is all about relative risk. The fact that there are a lot of questions of Yarran- whether he'll make it as a midfielder is a big thing for mine. I'd rather take the SAFER option in Suban, as you know what you are getting with him. I don't think our list is at a stage where we can take risks with high picks. Plus and I know he is not the same but Ashley Sampi ring a bell, crumbing forward high pick that didn't work out. I don't want to see us take a risk on Yarran and it fail only to see Surban kill it for another side. Safety first thanks.

My preferences (assuming Rich is gone)

1. Suban
2. De Boer
3. Hurley
4. Swift (#)

# use PP on Swift hopefully

What Priority pick? Even if we only win 1 more game for the year, the priority pick is taken after the first round. Swift will be long gone if he is as good as everyone talks.

Lads, saw this on the main trading and drafting board...

Wednesday 9 July 2008 at the Dome starting at 10am.

The triple header...

South Australia v NSW/ACT
Vic Country v Tasmania
Vic Metro v Western Australia (Match of The Carnival)

Hope some of you can go and see all the boys in action, and a report will be appreciated.

(I will be at work on that day, unless I take a sicky).
