There's alot of talk about picking up a gun midfielder with our first pick (Suban) if Rich wasn't available.

If this is the case and we were to pick up a gun midfielder, Hartlett sounds like a good option. Havn't really seen him play, so I thought i'd get a bit of info on him for those who also havn't seen him.

Hamish Hartlett Midfielder 181cm
West Adelaide 14/08/1990 67kg
Hartlett is the younger brother of Adam who has been on Carlton's list for three years. But Hamish is a completely different player. While his brother is a key position type, Hamish is a midfielder who was prominent for South Australia in the 2006 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships. In that carnival he averaged 31 disposals and ranked No.1 for hardball gets and uncontested marks. He averaged 17 disposals in last years NAB AFL Under 18 Championships and made his senior SANFL debut late last season.
HAMISH HARTLETT (SA): A likely top-10 pick, Hartlett's had some injuries this year. He's a clean and classy midfield prospect who uses the ball very neatly.
I have seen him play twice already this year (vs Eagles and Port). I will post a detailed review once I have seen him a couple more times, but I will give a little taste now.
From what I have seen, will be a 1st rounder. Oozes class, poise and skill. His first league game against the Eagles this year, Collins started him at the opening Centre bounce. Won the clearance, which resulted in a West goal within the first 30 seconds. Next clearance, won it again. Result, another West goal.
Is a beautiful right foot kick. His drop punts spin with impressive velocity and his efficiency in the two games I have seen him would probably exceed 80-85%. Textbook, clean drop of the ball.
In the Port game, he enjoyed spells on the ball and forward. It was his time up forward which impressed me during this game. Early on he took a brilliant overhead contested mark that was of AFL quality for a player his size. Ended the game with 3 goals from memory and named in West's best. His set shot kicking was outstanding. His approach is methodical, composed and fluid, which translated obviously to the scoresheet. All of his scores came from within 30-40 metres.
Hartlett also does the little things that catch the eye. Works the mark well defensively, makes quick, good decisions, has confident body language and is a good size for a midfielder. Also prepared to run behind the play, often unrewarded. Haven't seen his speed in top gear as yet.
I will hopefully see him another 10-15 times this year so by the end of the season I can give a comprehensive review come September. At this stage, a blue-chip prospect.

Some of the best kids in the AFL have just come out of SA and now they are mostly coming out of WA. The wheel turns and will keep turning. This years side is ok but there is only ONE really good player in Hartlett aint that right Hodgey

Seen lots of Hartlett just as I was finishing my scouting back in SA, was an exceptional junior, very very fit, beautiful kick and a solid all round footballer who kicks goals playing midfield roles. Didn't see the game V WA looks like he got heavily tagged and didn't handle it, but nor did Cotchin last year. Is a very very good kid who would absolutely be a first round pick and be good enough to warrant top 6 or 7 selection. If the crows nab him I'll start my naked run right now.

Hopefully Ant, Foj or any others can add to that.

Re: Lonergan - Why Sheedy Had To Go!

Word has it they are ALL following bombersno1's posts very very closely.

Yeah, he is in the know and has been watching exclusive footage leading up to the Champs, and will be watching more when the champs come...:D

There was talk about him last year but with SA having an ordinary champs he did not really get the chance to shine. I saw a couple of his games during the champs and he was ok without being outstanding. He used the ball ok and was reasonably hard at it.
So far this year i have only seen him on DVD in the game against Tassie. He was probaly just outside the best players but did kick a couple of goals (from memory). Overall i have not seen a lot of the South Aussie kids.
I will get to see SA play at Casey and then TD next month so i will have a slightly better idea after that.

If Rich is not there I won't be dissapointed if we get a tall but still rather a mid. Not alot of talk about him on this board but what abour Steele Sidebottom? From what i have read and only read he is a gun midfielder with X factor who can play inside and out. Anyone seem him and can share some insight?

In all likelihood, we'll have pick 4. I can't see Port not winning enough games.

So three to be picked ahead of us.

Naitanui and Rich are almost certain to go top three. Who will be the third? If you think back to the Gibbs draft, Luenberger was touted as one who'd make a late charge, but fell to 4. Is Jack Watts likely to do the same? Will Freo, assuming Nick Nat and Rich go 1 and 2, go for another midfielder, or are they likely to go for Watts?

I'd love for us to get Watts and have a lot of options with talls. We could ostensibly play with one ruckman, and Ryder and Gumbleton rotating through ruck, third tall forward and key back. Alternatively, Hurley would be a pretty handy pick-up.

I think that the depth of particular types of prospects will be telling in which way we will go with our pick. If we deem that after Rich that there is not a dramatic difference between the number 2 midfielder and the number 10 or 11 midfielder we may decide to try and get one of them with our second pick. This would mean that we would be left with either Hurley or Watts and this could make our future spine not only complete but also formidable.

To be honest I am not too worried about our midfield, sure it lacks star power but we have most bases covered we have plenty of fast outside types and a solid core of inside midfielders, not only that we have no impending retirements meaning that the midfield should become fairly settled.

I'm not convinced that Melbourne will take Natanui as their ruck stocks are not too bad.

They need forwards more than Rucks, so maybe that is the way they will go.

I too am beginning to think Melbourne will take Watts.

I think that statement has a bit of merit, though their ruck stocks aren't exactly filled with class. Jeff White has been and might be for another couple of years outstanding for the Melbourne footy club, but their depth is there but it certainly lacks class. Jamar, Johnson & Meeson don't look to be being standout rucks, but one of them might turn out to be above average. Then that leaves that 2nd or 1st ruck spot up for grabs in the future, and with a ruckman being one of the best available and has been highly touted by so many so called 'experts', I can't see them passing up on the opportunity of grabbing Big Nait. But Watts has been gaining momentum, but them two WA boys, Nait & Rich have been in the news and media all year so far and it has only been the first half of the season, so it will and should continue. The media often get the first couple of picks right, but after that it can become a raffle, and this year looks no different. I don't care whoever we get with the 4th pick, whoever we get will be a quality youngster and will have every chance to become better players than Rich or Naitanui just to clear the air, but there are always a few that I particularly like but I don't wanna get my hopes up to high, like last year I was set on getting Palmer, and this year I'll be having a much more open minded approach so I don't get disappointed for a few months.

Melb - Watts
WC- Natanui
Essendon- Rich
Freo- Hurley? Suban? Yarran? Hartlett???
;):thumbsu:

Melbourne - Watts
WC - Rich (have said they want Rich badly and have Cox (25) and Seaby (23) as ruck stocks)
Freo - (Dire need for quality mids and have decent ruck stocks with Sandilands (25) and Warnock (21) and decent KP stocks aswell, with farmer coming towards the end of his career might look at small forwards aswell) Suban, Yarren IMO
Essendon - Natanui...

Would it be possible that a potenial number one could slip so far?

Lads, saw this on the main trading and drafting board...

Definitely going to this. If you want me to watch someone, let me know here, or on my User page, and I'll post a report after the games.

Also, if any of you guys are going, I'll post later on where I'll sit, and feel free to come and say hi:) I'll be wearing my Kyle Reimers jumper:D

Just a bit too early for predictions, still a lot of footy to be played over the next couple of months. As for Melbourne when you look through their list they need class in all areas so singling out forwards alone is a bit of a stretch.
They do have a couple of young talls in Lynden Dunn,Micheal Newton and Matthew Bate who have shown a bit at times but have also missed a bit of footy through injury. Last year they drafted Addam Maric who was the best small forward in the TAC Cup.
Their ruck stocks are interesting. Meeson,Martin,Johnson and Jamar are hardly what you would call a quality lot at the moment but they are all in the 21 to 24 year old bracket so they are not quite at the end of the line as far as development goes.

No doubt we will get a pick in the range of 3-6. A mid of KPD would by my priority in this draft. Heard of this lad Tom Swift, who in injured and is likely to slip down the draft. Was initially locked in for a top 10 pick but could slide to our 2nd round. We should have a serious look at him.

I still think tall forwards is a problem for Melbourne. I don't think that Bate or Dunn can play as a true KPF plus Newton is struggling a fair bit. They really need to get another key forward, but I think they might be best off trying to get one with pick 17 or pick 18-20 as they have enough firepower with Davey, Bate, Woni. and Maric: they just need a bit more structure.

Melbourne's key forward stocks are exceptionally thin, I don't think that can be denied.

Matthew Bate has shown most promise as a tall flanker type pushing into the midfield and Lynden Dunn's been used as a tagger in recent times. Neither will ever hold down a key position I wouldn't have thought.

Michael Newton's the only real up and comer and he's gone backwards this year.

As you say though, they lack a lot of class in all areas aside from a few decent midfield prospects.
