they're all still young... the only thing we can say is that we didn't get the best 'first year player'. I really like the way Myers moves, in that he has a lot of poise and awareness with the ball in his hands. You may be thinking very differently on the Myers/Palmer debate this time next year...

Firstly ant555 and of coarse others would be great if you could response.

But for the rest of the picks,

I was thinking that we need a small defender type, with our 2nd pick perhaps. Would I be right in saying that most players that play as small defender at under 18 level generally aren't to crash hot? So is there a tough midfield type around the 2nd round that you could see playing a role down back at AFL level? (Slattery is doing alright but not the best needs help and at the moment Rama is the only option down back, unless someone feels there is a player who could step into this role?)

And would need some depth in the rucks would be good too , perhaps 1 in the 2nd,3rd or 4th round and another in the Rookie draft.

Overall key back, small back and depth in the rucks.

1. Jack Watts 194cm 85kg Vic Metro

Watts had an exceptional carnival and because of his basketball background and being bottom aged is seen as having a big upside which recruiters love. Watts has reliable hands and moves quickly both on the lead and with sideways movement. Looks like he could be a very potent chf/ff which makes him a very attractive proposition.

2. Nick Natanui 197cm 85kg WA

Spring heeled ruckman who is an athletic freak. Covers the ground amazing well, works hard to achieve 1%s such as tackling, shepherd and blocks and has a heap of upside to him. His kicking has been well documented and will need further attention. I also think he could benefit from learning to be more dangerous when in the ruck and try and be more of an offensive presence on the ground.

3. Daniel Rich 183cm 83kg WA

Midfielder with a deadly left foot. Is equally dangerous both inside and outside and displays a good midfielders motor. Not express pace but not one paced either. Rich reminds me of a slightly quicker Paul Haselby with Luke Hodge’s left foot. Rich will step straight into senior footy and looks to be a 200 game player.

4. Jack Ziebell 188cm 84kg Vic Country

Ziebell is a power athlete who is very well suited to the next level. Ziebell can play as a strong marking 3rd tall as well as run through the midfield. He possesses great acceleration and is hard at the contest. He also has strong hands in marking contests and is a penetrating kick. I see Ziebell as utility type in the AFL who can play as a tall to create mismatches but also take his turn in the midfield.

5. Jordan Roughead 199cm 87kg Vic Country

Roughead has improved markedly in the last year and is another player with a basketball background. Used predominantly in the ruck where he showcases his athleticism in ruck contests and around the ground. Rougheads hands continue to improve and is a dangerous player in the forward line. Roughead has wide shoulders and will develop into an imposing athlete after a few AFL preseasons.

6. Michael Hurley 192cm 92kg Vic Metro

Hurly is a very reliable footballer who has been used primarily in the back half but has a few bags of goals to his credit in TAC footy. Hurley is tall enough and physically mature to hold down a key position in AFL. A slight query for me is his pace off the mark which will make his testing interesting. What I really like about Hurley is his competitiveness- he hates to lose a contest which is reminiscent of Nathan Brown when he was with the Rebels. Worse case with this bloke is getting Simon Prestigiacomo while he could be quite a bit more than that.

7. Jackson Trengove 196cm 77kg Vic Metro

Trengove suffered a season ending injury at Metro training ripping his hamstring off the bone. I still rate him extremely highly as a good punter always looks at past form! Trengove was dominant last year as a bottom ager who took all comers including Kruezer, McEvoy, Lobbe, Simpson and McKenna to the cleaners playing in the back half or in the ruck. Trengove has a superb leap and hates to lose a contest. He also has a lot of upside due to his physical immaturity, lack of TAC footy (plays at PEGS) and missing most of this year. Should develop into a rangy CHB who can also be a mobile ruckman.

8. Lewis Johnston 192cm 87kg SA

Mobile key position type who has the skills to run through the midfield. Reminds me a little of Chad Cornes in the sense that he has the skills of a key position player with the athletic attributes of someone who could run through the midfield. Will need to work on the defensive side of his game and his discipline will be put under the microscope by scouts around the league but has a heap of talent and is the right AFL size.

9. Tyrone Vickery 200cm 86kg Vic Metro

Athletic tall who is continuing to improve at a very pleasing rate. Moves well across the ground and is getting stronger hands seemingly each time he plays. Vickery has put on a bit of muscle this year but still has a significant amount of size to acquire. Vickery is a very good lead for a player of his size and attacks the footy with much greater vigour this year as his strength improves.

10. Ayce Cordy 202cm 77kg Vic Country

Ayce is a very exciting athlete who is built like a lollypop. Another lightweight tall who has an outstanding vertical leap and good set of hands. Will need several AFL preseasons but looms as a definite F/S selection for the Bulldogs who will lick their lips at gaining this young bloke on their list.

11. Hamish Hartlett 182cm 74kg SA

Hard working ball magnet who has already played quite a bit of senior footy this year. Received a lot of close attention during nationals which he seemed to find frustrating. Hartlett is an inside midfielder who wins his own football and is very good with his hands. Others may rate him higher but he doesn’t quite have the X factor for me. Saying that this bloke will be a very good AFL player who will be a very solid citizen in the mould of Matthew Boyd.

12. Shaun McKernan 196cm 95kg Vic Metro

Another super athletic tall who has the skill set to be a very good AFL tall. Is a very good tap ruckman and dangerous presence in the forward line. Has a very good leap though found it hard to counter Natanui- what was pleasing was his willingness to jump into Natanui to upset his ruckwork. McKernan can dominate periods of a game which was particulary evident against the Falcons last year when he booted 4 goals in a quarter as a bottom age player.

13. Chris Yarran 180cm 84kg WA

Exciting midfielder/ small forward who others will rate much higher. (as I have done earlier) Yarran is a superb kick and a one touch player. Yarran is also extremely dangerous around goals. I am concerned about Yarrans bodyshape and his capacity to match athleticism in the AFL. This bloke could be a Didak or Cyril Rioli type but he could also be Ashley Sampi which I think may worry some clubs.

14. Aaron Cornelius 192cm 84kg TAS

Very clever forward who is agile and has a good set of hands. Cornelius is very good on the lead and can also fly for the big pack mark. Cornelius has had the advantage of playing senior footy for over a year now which has toughened him up and helped him on the defensive side of his game. A very exciting prospect.

15. Matthew Broadbent 189cm 81kg SA

Athletic tall midfielder/utility with a good tank and very clean hand and foot skills. Could play flanks, wings and through the middle at AFL level. Is able to win own ball and can also be a link up player. May not be rated quite so high by others but I think he does all things pretty well and is the right size and shape.

16. Mitch Robinson 188cm 87kg TAS

Super athletic with a very penetrating right foot. I originally didn’t rate this guy so high but his carnival has propelled him way up the charts. I am much more happy with the way he attacks the footy now as I thought he was a little outside waiting to use his strong foot skills. Robinson has a good burst of speed and looks like he will have an AFL tank with more development.

17. Nick Heyne 187cm 79kg Vic Country

Another tallish athletic type who is a very good runner, amasses a high amount of possessions and will be very versatile at the next level. I think he doesn’t always hurt the opposition as much as he could with his disposals and perhaps not quite as classy as Broadbent and Robinson but a high quality athlete who gets a lot of footy both inside and out.

18. Matthew Deboer 187cm 85kg WA

Solidly built son of a gun who attacks contests hard and gets a fair amount of footy. Chose to not nominate for last years draft though it wont hurt him like it did Arrowsmith. Deboer has a good tank though I haven’t seen him use express pace which will make his testing results interesting reading. Reputedly very solid citizen off the ground and possesses genuine leadership qualities.

19.Sam Blease 183cm 72kg Vic Metro

Bottom age midfielder who possesses explosive acceleration and a nice right foot. He was terrific during the U/16 championships and was not out of place at this years championships against older and stronger bodies. Will physically develop further with time and is one who may creep higher in the pecking order after draft camp.

20. Steele Sidebottom 182cm 79kg Vic Country

Bottom player who was born to play football. Has a very developed football brain which allows him to make great choices with the footy and attacks each contest with zeal. My query on young Steele is his level of athleticism and I have found that some of the best games I have seen from him are more at half forward rather than as a genuine midfielder.

21. Michael Walters 177cm 75kg

Very talented little man with a nice burst of speed and A1 disposal. Is able to win his own ball and also dangerous around the big sticks. Very hard to guess where this bloke will go come November but has a ton of talent and is very exciting.

22. Daniel Murray 200cm 86kg WA

Athletic big man who has been living in Natanui’s shadow. Murray has good size and a nice leap in the centre square. He moves to the right places as a ruckman and is beginning to hold his marks. I may well have rated him higher than he deserves but he looks to have the right stuff to develop into a very good big man.

23. Jordan Lisle 196cm 87kg Vic Metro

Yet another big man with a lot of upside. Very athletic and strong in the air. I see him developing into a key position player most likely in the back half. I am interested to see how he tests for agility as I have noticed a few times now that he has quite a wide turning circle and leads predominantly in straight lines. Reminds me a little of Drew Petrie at a similar age.

24. Tom Lynch 191cm 84kg Vic Metro

Deceptively tall midfielder/ utility who has been a hampered by a knee injury last year. Lynch possesses footy smarts and reads the play exceptionally well. I see Lynch developing into a link player in the mould of Sam Fisher but when he was fully fit last year he played some very good games in the TAC on the ball early in the season.

25. Stephen Hill 182cm 72kg WA

Another WA midfielder who can run, use the footy and run through the lines. Hill had a prolific carnival and probably boosted his stocks along the way. Hill will fit nicely into an AFL midfield rotation once he builds his body more.

26. Tom Swift 190cm 84kg WA

A tall utility/ midfielder who suffered an injury setback last year and looks to be just treading water a little at the moment which is understandable. Had a great U/16 year and recruiters wont forget that. His draft position will be dictated by how his second half of the year pans out.

27. Michael Still 192cm 81kg Northern Knights

Bottom age tall who has more than a touch of class. Has very good hands and is athletic. Has a bigger upside than most and is one who’s stocks may rise as the TAC season continues.

28. Luke Stanton 191cm 83kg Vic Metro

Tall utility type who I think is starting to know his game a lot better now. I much prefer to see Stanton play as a running player and feel that he struggles when required to play as a key position player. Stanton’s kicking and ability to get the footy has improved and I see him as developing into a Jason Blake type of player.

29. Clancee Pearce 183cm 85kg WA

Bull at a gate utility who runs in fast straight lines when the footy is in dispute and likes to break lines from half back. A query with Pearce may be his ability to rotate through the midfield however players like Brett Jones and Henry Slattery have made solid careers at half back.

30. Nick Suban 179cm 82kg Vic Country

Tough as old shoes solid onballer/ utility. Had a very good championship last year and was serviceable again this year. I don’t see that much upside to Suban however you know what you are getting with him. A tough uncompromising footballer who will be ready to go at AFL level. Hard to categorise where and if Suban will go come November as there are always players like Banner, German, Hughes, Sloane and Zaharakis competing for limited spaces as well as a tonne of little blokes in the VFL like Andrew Horne who are equally as good.

31. Christopher Hall 179cm 65kg SA

Built more like Lleyton Hewitt than an AFL footballer however he possesses great speed and has played SANFL this year. Possesses nice disposal and makes good decisions with the footy. Will need to bulk up significantly but clubs are always looking for speed and this kid has it.

32. Liam Shiels 183cm 78kg Vic Metro

Bottom aged prolific ball winner who just keeps on getting the footy. Had a very impressive U/16 carnival and should develop into an able AFL midfielder. Isnt super fast but has a good tank which should continue to develop. Is able to play both inside and outside the contest.

33. Will Young 192cm 83kg Vic Country

Tallish athletic utility who attacks the footy with a bit of dash. Has an AFL type body size and relishes the contest. May not have enough pizzazz for AFL recruiters but he reminds me of Stephen Gilham at a similar age and I like blokes at Young’s size who are competitive in the air and on the ground.

34. Jarrad Redden 202cm 88kg SA

Developing tall who moves around the ground well. Plays a kick behind the play well and is beginning to take his marks. I would like him to go forward and be dangerous which Vickery, McKernan and Natanui are more capable of doing this at this stage. In a draft full of good talls it will be interesting where Redden ends up.

35. Jake Walsh 196cm 96kg Vic Metro

Bottom age powerhouse who is capable of taking a very strong mark. Will need to work on being more agile and being cleaner below his knees however you cant teach his size. Will need to refine his body to ensure that he doesn’t get too big but could be a hard to handle key forward at AFL level. Unfortunately he could also be Ryan Willits who just couldn’t acquire the athleticism to make it.

36. Taylor Hunt 183cm 79kg Vic Metro

Powerful utility type who is a strong customer. Penetrating kick who has an athletics background before commiting himself to his footy. Able to play through the midfield but I see him more as a half back in the mould of Mark Chaffey. A bit more development in this kid I think.

37. Andrew Browne 202cm 106kg Vic Country

Huge lump of a lad who has made significant improvement this year as he isn’t rucking behind Dawson Simpson. Has added bulk to his frame and is certainly no pushover. Struggles against super athletic ruckman and needs to use his size more in contests. Kicking is a bit iffy but is a competitor. Like Redden he is against some high quality talls this year.

38. Daniel Hanneberry 182cm 75cm Vic Metro

Silky skilled mover who plays predominantly wing/ midfield. Reads the play well and is adept at getting a stack of the footy. Hanneberry is bottom aged and will get stronger and continue to build his tank. Also has had limited exposure to TAC footy due to Private school footy. Will be interesting to see if he nominates for the draft.


39. Aaron Purves 187cm 82kg Vic Metro

Purves is a hard player to get a handle on. He can do the freakish and then put in an ordinary effort on the footy field. However, when on Purves is a tallish utility who can make things happen. He is dangerous forward and can take his turn through the middle. He always looks like he is coasting to me but they may be his laconic nature. His testing results will be very important to his draft chances but he has a lot of natural talent.

40. Sam Wright 188cm 76kg Vic Country

Tallish flanker type who can do the freakish on the footy field. Looks a little like Dale Thomas and looks to have based some of his game on him however he needs to be far more consistent with his footy. Steve Johnson and Dale Thomas have shown there is a place for the flashy half forward and Wright may have the tools to get to the big show.

41. David Zaharakis 180cm 73kg Vic Metro

Speedy player who many including yours truly felt might have been taken late in last year’s draft as a bottom ager. Has been renowned for his speed but questioned about his kicking and ball handling. This year he has taken his game to a higher level having several standout games. Top quality individual who would give himself every opportunity at the next level.

42. James Klause 195cm 89kg WA

Strong hard at it unit who goes about his work with a minimum of fuss. Has AFL quality size- the question will be how does his athleticism stack up. I have seen him burnt on the lead too often yet I have also seen him be more than competitive in one on one situations.

43. Luke Shuey 185cm 84kg Vic Metro

Shuey has an AFL build to be a ground and pound midfielder. Shuey can certainly get the ball and takes his turn to put the head over the ball. Shuey’s kicking can be a bit hit and miss which will concern scouts and you would like to see Shuey run through the lines a bit more often. I think Shuey has a bit of upside as he is another player who has played Private school footy which I feel stifles your development a little unless you are a superstar in the Judd/ Ball class.

44. Johnny Rayner 184cm 66kg Western Jets

A left field bottom aged selection however a bit of method in my madness. Rayner had a string of 3/4 games which were very promising before a back injury has put him on the shelf for possibly the rest of the season. Rayner is a national quality 400m to 3km runner and this is a fair qualification to have on your resume in today’s football. Rayner obviously needs to bulk up considerably but he might be one of those selections that pay handsome dividends into the future.


45. Neville Jetta 178cm 75kg WA

Excitement machine who can kick goals, run quickly and do the exciting. Clubs looking for an exciting small forward will look at Jetta. The big question is whether Jetta can do the business in the midfield. The jury is out right now but he has the 2nd half of the season to show his wares.

46. Charlie Sharples 180cm 74kg NT

19 year old who has been playing in the SANFL. Always known for possessing a lot of natural talent, Sharples is beginning to turn potential into results. I still think he needs to work harder on his defensive game but talent and improvement might get him over the line this year.

47. Zachary Clarke 203cm 77kg Vic Metro

Very tall, very light beanpole. Clarke is a long way off being competitive in the AFL however the rewards could be significant if he comes on. There is a touch of Robert Warnock about Clarke and clubs are simply much more patient with big blokes. A club like Brisbane who have Charman, Lueuenberger and Mitch Clark is the perfect club for this project.

48. Tom Rockliff 183cm 83kg Vic Country

Rockliff is a dangerous small forward who is very clever and unusually good in the air for his size. The rejuvenation of Paul Medhurst may have helped young Tom’s cause as there is a place in the AFL. However like Robbie Gray, Rockliff’s athleticism is a big query and held him from being picked up last year. Had a few attempts at running through the midfield during the Nationals and wasn’t convincing for mine. Will he be the next Dean Kelly or will someone take a chance?

49. Patrick Hayes 190cm 80kg Calder

Extremely quick and athletic former representative hockey player. A few clubs had more than a nibble at him last year and his rate of improvement this year has been pleasing and has the scope to improve significantly more. The queries on Hayes are his kicking which has improved as the season has progressed and his decision making which is a little scratchy. However, Hayes shows speed from half back which doesn’t break lines it destroys them. A touch of Tadgh Kennelly about him.Been a rare exciting rookie for Calder.

50. Luke McDonald 195cm 84kg Vic Metro

McDonald has a very strong pair of hands. Marking is his forte right now however McDonald needs to continue to work on his allround game. In a draft full of promising talls he may come up short however he reminds me a little of Scott Simpson from last year and clubs might see that this big guy could develop into a potent key position player.
