MRP / Trib. Merrett incident Rnd3 2014 versus GCS

I'm hoping 2 weeks but who knows what the MRP will come up with.

Of course they were totally different incidents. That is not in dispute. One was last season and the one under discussion was last Saturday. Merrett was given 3 weeks for the sling tackle on Hurley and he will be given more, I suspect, by the match review panel for his cheap head high shot on the weekend. I tell you one thing though, the MRP will make a link between the two when they consider his penalty.

Bit obtuse, but I suspect you know I'm referring to the nature of the incidents, not the dates on which they occurred. No doubt his past will be taken into account by the MRP but in terms of the incidents themselves they are uncomparable IMO.

The essential point I am making is that he has let the club down. As if his indifferent form was not bad enough, now the team has to put up with Merrett basically making himself unavailable for a month or so, because he has so little control that whacking a bloke who is wide open across the head seems like a good option. Oh but he suffers "brain fades" some will say, well guess what, there is ittle or no room in successful clubs for players like that.

Merrett may well be under contract until 2016, I don't keep up to speed on contract status to be honest, but that doesn't mean he has to get a senior game. Perhaps he might like to do what Amon Buchanan did in the twighlight of his career and make a contribution to the club by helping with the development of our younger players in the reserves.

Yeah this is never going to happen. Not defending the incident or his brain fades at all either, but to suggest he should be played in the ressies or traded based off two incidents occurring within 12 months is ridiculous. By that logic we would have traded Brown away at 22 years old.

Brown was a 22 year old who had already stamped himself as a champion. He was arguably one of the best key position players in the game, playing in one of the greatest teams of all time, but he just needed to grow up. I also have it on quite good authority that Matthews laid the law down very clearly to Brown after the last of a string of suspensions, along the lines of, if it happens again you are GONE. To his great credit, Brown was able to not only demonstrate exceptional discipline, but outstanding leadership.

Merrett on the other hand is a 29 year old of dubious ability whose contribution to the side revolves around his ability to spoil opposition forwards. When he has the ball in his hands he is wildly unpredicatble and he has consistently displayed an ability to make costly and regular errors of judgement in general play. He is not even close to being in the same class as Brown. Looks at the age differential also. Brown was a 22 year old who made some bad decisions on the field and it cost him and the club. Merrett is 29 for goodness sake and one can hardly put his lack of discipline down to a matter of immaturity. Have a good hard look at the vision. Is this what we want at Brisbane from one of our Deputy Vice Captains while we are trying to rebuild the club and our culture?

No, but if you apply the same principles of trading away players after unsavory incidents, Brown would have been gone around the time we won our first flag; lets not forget his record with the tribunal was appalling in his younger days. That just shows how ridiculous your suggestion is.

Also the bolded gives away your motivations. Dubious ability is extremely harsh. Doesn't matter anyway because there's no way we'll be trading Merrett so all this is effectively moot.

A lot of optimism in the OP. But then again, this got 2 weeks last year (granted, no bad record)
Not so much optimistic - just a bit of counter suggesting...

I think he will be offered somewhere between 4 and 6 weeks. The Mckernan hit on Sheppard last year has been admittedly suggested by the AFL as wrong/inadequate to the crime and if Rocky got two for the bump on Mitchell then this may well get 6.

Deserves to be suspended for stupidity but not lynched.

The guy bleeds for the club and I reckon that's why we saw this frustrated outburst. Not acceptable and has to redirect his passion, but I'm not going to tear down one of the few blokes who cares that much. He will be ****ing gutted at what he's done.

Some of us turn way too quickly and extremely on our own. Years of good service to the club can be forgotten in a microsecond.

Yeah, I think a Lynch-ing is a bit much.

Just suspend him for a few weeks.

Existing bad record so not eligible for early plea discounts and will get loading for priors in the last few years. 2 weeks would be miraculous in light of that.

Merrett looked like a frustrated man against the suns, probably has something to do with his ordinary start to the season or maybe his leg injury form last year is preventing him from playing the way he would like . Either way it looked like a pretty ordinary thing to do and he should definitely be doing 3-4 weeks.

You are right TBD. The way that people turned on Travis Johnstone, Tom Collier and Sam Sheldon was disgraceful! ;)

If only Merrett was as disciplined as James Hawksley, then we wouldn't be lamenting the fact that he is about to be handed a pretty stiff and completely justified suspension by the MRP. James Hawksley knew how to control himself.

Team Sammy :drunk: ?

Dunno, wasn't on that one in a meaningful way. Was too busy watching you try to single-handedly push the Little Hawksley Engine that Couldn't up a hill.

Classic! RupertKZ is Football and QuinlanKZ is Football love it. Perhaps someone could read it to Merrett while he is suspended.

Someone should definitely read Merrett this one:

Upon reflection though, I may have been a bit harsh on Merrett, because:

I'm sure this applies to 29 year old professional athletes as well.

Still, he deserves his punishment, because he has been:

Satellite
