well i can't find the original thread and the discusion on this topic

but i've noticed talk of Wood being delisted or traded at years end.

Now Messen is nowhere near that point with us (he looks like he wants to head home though but thats not AFC's fault)

So 2 things -
a) if this happens was the AFC decision to recruit Messen correct

b)what does it say about players getting a game when they were not ready, remembering that Wood got a rising start nomination

First I head of him getting delisted. Heard rumblings about getting traded but delisted is a bit of a surprise to me

Anyway, I have always said and still believe that AFC made the right decision by drafting Meesen. We were CRYING out for some young ruckmen and in a draft that was labeled as the best in years when it came to ruck talent, how could you possibly overlooked what everyone in the known was saying as the best young ruckmen in the pool.

We didn't reach to get him (take him earlier than many thought), in fact many had him going at pick 6 to Hawks. We needed a ruckmen and we took the best available. I would expect us to do the same in that situation.

Getting a game too early when a player is not ready can really destroy a career. By the other token, waiting for too long to debut a player can hamper his development. As for teh rising star nomination, truth be told that week no one stood out and many were surprised that he got the nomination. Furthermore, RS nominations mean sweet **** all. David Gallagher had one and where is he these days?! Had a great AFL career that lad

Similarly, Graham Johncock never had a rising star nomination but he is a gun player.

Got to disagree with you for precisely this reason, Stiff.

It was widely considered that Meesen and Wood were not only the two best ruck prospects in their draft, but as you say, in a good few years.

Meesen was considered to be pretty much plug and play, while the praying mantus from West Adelaide was the longer term project but with more upside who'd be ready in 2-3 years.

At the time I constructed a primitive 'Got Wood?' avatar from a picture of him I found looking like a stoked kindergartener not only because of this general feeling, but because he was also South Australian and as such we would have no problems with homesickness/resultant poor development curves unlike with other high-DP Victorian project players - Gilligan, Williams, Angwin, then Watts.

Once again reflection tells us that we backed the wrong horse, unfortunately.

Got in before me, DT. I recall pretty distinctly that Meesen and Wood were both being mooted in the 7-8 region. Certainly would not have been reach to go with the South Aussie... infact, it was pretty much the case study in action of taking the hometowner, when deciding between two similar talents (admittedly the AFC felt they weren't... and probably incorrectly).

Absolutely correct and in that order, closely followed by Monfries.

Any one of those 3 was a justifiable selection at that stage for Adelaide.
