Thoughts?

I had the chance to watch it last weekend and I think I may have built my expectations up too much - as I thought it didn't really match the heights of the first one.

It is an exciting show but I felt it was mixed pretty bad and didn't sound as hard hitting as the first.

Was good to see new tracks but I felt they could have definitely played some more older tracks rather than reusing tracks from the first one (Fade to Black, Unforgiven 1 anyone?)

I thought James voice was pretty good though, has come along way and some of the tracks his voice really suits the symphony part.

Also thought the guy who did the Anaesthesia solo absolutely killed it.

Any other thoughts?

Kinda unnecessary but nice enough. I'm sure people are enjoying it.
Pearl Jam did Live on Two Legs 1 & 2 and it worked best the first time. Even the album cover, sorta memorable.
It'd be hard to beat the first album, especially with the two new songs being half decent, no leaf clover etc. They did most of their gems on the first album as well.

I dunno what you'd expect from them now.

It'd be cool to see them do a James Bond Theme. The Mission Impossible theme was pretty good.

Their output has been kinda meh for a long time in terms of songwriting, its not even close to conceivable that they have another "One" up their sleeves.

A lot of bands are like that though aren’t they? Does PJ have another Ten? Or much since Vitalogy more to the point. Does Live have another Lightning Crashes?
So many bands aren’t still writing highly quality like their first big hits.

Anaesthesia and Unforgiven III were the interesting stand outs. Outlaw Torn was probably the best performance - very powerful song.

I agree it would have been nice to hear some songs that weren't played the first time. Fade to Black or Sanitarium would've worked well. Load songs seem to have gone away from their sets in recent years and I'd be happy to hear Hero of the Day, Until it Sleeps and especially Bleeding Me be regular fixtures again.

Overall a good performance, maybe not as enjoyable as the first but that was 20 years ago. Getting this kind of performance arranged and organised must be a real headache so its commendable that they managed to pull it off again.

The first one was 20 years ago ?? OMFG o_O:'( I'm old.

don't know who is responsible for the arrangements but it feels like the orchestra parts have been shoe horned in for the sake of it.
for me they detract from the music rather than add to it... Anaesthesia is pretty damn good though.

yet to hear no. 2 but this is the same complaint i have with the first one. metallica play the way they always have, and there just happens to be an orchestra in the room. rather than a collaboration, the orchestra is tasked with finding places to fit in and consequently noodles around in the sonic margins. the orchestra has to justify itself but can't do it while anything interesting is happening.

It's worse in #2 in my opinion, I think the sound mixing in #1 tried to address this more than #2 and it is more obvious

Yep. It sounded to me like when Im stuck between two active rooms at the rehearsal studios.
