how much more building would they have to go? I thought it technically wasn't a building site anymore with the opening to the public for the sporting halls last weekend? plus our training and admin facilities opened ages ago. does seem a bit strange.

Metricon Stadium wish to advise that the Broadbeach South Station event bus stop is currently undergoing enhancement works.

This has resulted in the relocation of the Broadbeach bus stop for this weekend’s game, Gold Coast SUNS vs Geelong Cats, Saturday 6 May 7.25pm. The new temporary bus stop is located 200 metres south of the tram station to a bus stop which will be signed as a Temporary Event Bus Stop.

Not sure how many people saw it over the weekend but the exterior of the old basketball arena that sits between Metricon and the new Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre is currently undergoing a face lift. So it shouldn't be an eyesore for too much longer.

Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre to host Chinese national basketball team

GOLD Coast fans will get a taste of international basketball ahead of next year’s Commonwealth Games when the Brisbane Bullets take on China at Carrara next month.

China will play two of Australia’s top NBL teams during a tour of the country next month, taking on Melbourne United at Melbourne Park on July 16 before heading to the Gold Coast to play the Bullets on July 18.

The match will be held at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre at Carrara, the Games venue for badminton, weightlifting, powerlifting and wresting.

It’s a rare taste of elite basketball for the Coast, which lost its NBL team, the Blaze, in 2012.

NBL Chief Executive Jeremy Loeliger said the games were a great opportunity to showcase basketball between two of the leading nations in the region.

“We are very excited to be hosting China in Australia to play against two of our biggest NBL clubs in Melbourne United and the Brisbane Bullets,” Loeliger said.

“We have a strong relationship with the Chinese Basketball Association led by its President Yao Ming and this is an opportunity to strengthen our ties with one of the biggest basketball markets in world.

“Basketball is experiencing a huge boom in both countries and this is fantastic opportunity for everyone including Chinese Australians who may not have seen the NBL before to come along and enjoy top class basketball.

“We are particularly excited to be able to host a game in Melbourne but also on the Gold Coast which will stage the Commonwealth Games next year.

While the Coast will hold the already sold out basketball finals at the Convention Centre, the preliminary rounds will be held in Cairns and Townsville, with the Chinese tour giving Gold Coast fans a rare chance to watch the sport at the elite level.

“It will be a great opportunity for the Bullets to play in front of fans at the Gold Coast at the new Carrara Stadium,” Loeliger said.

The games will be streamed live on NBL TV in Australia and to tens of millions of fans in China via telcos Sina and Youku.

The China national team’s tour follows next month’s trip to that country by an NBL All-Australian team which will play three games against the Chinese national team starting in Beijing on July 5.

The series will also feature games in Guangdong on July 7 and Jilin on July 9, with all three games to be broadcast live on Fox Sports in Australia.

It follows the success of last year’s tour of China by the NBL All-Australian team which was watched by a huge audience on Chinese television.

Brisbane Bullets to play Melbourne United as NBL basketball returns to the Coast

A NATIONAL Basketball League clash between the Brisbane Bullets and Melbourne United will complete a supercharged fortnight of sport on the Gold Coast.

It has been confirmed the Bullets and Melbourne will meet at the new Carrara Stadium on Saturday night, October 28, a week after the major motor racing event the Gold Coast 600.

Carrara Stadium, venue for the 2018 Commonwealth Games basketball, is also the venue for a match between the Bullets and China on July 18.

The NBL match is a fourth-round fixture and NBL chief Jeremy Loeliger is expecting national interest in a clash between two of the competition’s biggest franchises.

“We are delighted to be bringing NBL back to the Gold Coast,” Loeliger said.

“The Gold Coast is a great sporting region and it’s a fantastic opportunity for the Bullets to expand their footprint.

“Together with the game against China on July 18 this is a terrific result for the NBL, the Gold Coast and fans who enjoy top class basketball.”

■ THE Gold Coast Rollers found life tough without last season’s Bullets star Torrey Craig, who is in America trialling for a contract in the NBA.

The Rollers men lost 92-69 to Rockhampton at Southport over the weekend.

The Rollers were slow out of the blocks and trailed 26-14 at quarter-time and by 57-37 at halftime.

Chris Fowler hit 41 points for the Rockets, who completed a double after their women beat the Rollers by 87-72.

It's official - NBL action returns to the Gold Coast this October. The Gold Coast Sports Precinct continues to grow and acquire tenants.

Funny how renting costs at the GC Convention Centre hurt the Blaze so much but now the city has a suitable venue and could probably support an NBL franchise full time.

Bit of a write up about the new proposed amusement park not far from metricon stadium

This is probably the most exciting part of the development for footy fans:

The company, among the top 10 theme park operators in the world, also proposes bars, restaurants, hotels and a residential sub-division on the site, along with a wetlands environment.

Bars and restaurants that footy fans can walk to after the game. The area is seriously lacking that at the moment.

Uber to the nearest train station or shuttle location is the best way. Takes me 20 minutes if I time it right with the train from helensvale.

ICYMI, the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre hosted a basketball match between the Chinese national team and the Brisbane Bullets on Tuesday. The Bullets will return to Carrara later this year for an NBL fixture against Melbourne United so it's not the last time basketball will be played there. Here's a pic from the China game:

The arena was probably 70% full which makes me think there could be a future for pro basketball on the GC. The Blaze folded back in 2012 due to financial difficulties and a lot of that had to do with ridiculous rent costs at the GC Convention Centre. So a GC team could play at the CSLC most of the time and then just play bigger fixtures at the GCCC. I think that would probably work.

Check out yesterday's A Current Affair story on the new theme park just up the road from Metricon. Australian Legends World was given approval to build recently and it's a pretty exciting project. Imagine going skiing at a theme park in the early afternoon and then walking a kilometre down the road to watch the Suns play at Metricon later that night. Hopefully it will also mean the council/state government will look more seriously at extending the light rail line from Broadbeach to Nerang, with a stop at Metricon along the way.

Imagine going skiing at a theme park in the early afternoon and then walking a kilometre down the road to watch the Suns play at Metricon later that night. Hopefully it will also mean the council/state government will look more seriously at extending the light rail line from Broadbeach to Nerang, with a stop at Metricon along the way.

Possibly an even more exciting prospect would be going skiing on a hot summer's day and then walking 1km/riding the light rail down the road to Metricon to watch the Gold Coast's Big Bash League team. Sounds like a pipe dream but these things are in the works at the moment.

Here's an interesting anecdote regarding transport to the new theme park:

The Songcheng Group is also planning a ferry connection to run down the Nerang River with stops at Metricon Stadium and Surfers' Paradise.

Although I think a ferry system with stops at Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Metricon and the new theme park will be good, I don't think it'll cut it long term. I think they will need to extend the light rail line from Broadbeach to Nerang later on... but I guess ferry connections will suffice in the short term.
