Revealed: Location of new elite sport field as Carrara attracts national sporting team

This may well be the first step to us getting our own A-League franchise again. Looks like the new elite rectangular ground will be completed in November which matches up with the 2021-22 A-League season. It looks like the Brisbane Roar will start using our old demountable buildings as well.

Not sure what this means for our planned women's 5k stadium but I assume that will be built on the other side of the stadium.
Wait so is this just a rectangular stadium?

I was watching the Richmond v Port Adelaide game tonight and I couldn't believe how loud it sounded plus the commentators kept saying it was really loud and it got me wondering whether an atmosphere like that would ever be possible on the Gold Coast. For context, the crowd at Adelaide Oval tonight was 33k and we know Metricon currently holds 25k but we also have an open end that could potentially be closed to increase capacity.

I estimate each section in the second tier is approximately a little over 700 seats and you could probably fit 7 second tier sections between the two light posts if you wanted to retain the video board as is. So that's approximately 5000 extra seats added between the light posts. Then we also have the smaller open area between the light pole towards the bottom left of the pic below and the corporate area.

I know a very small part of this open section needs to be preserved for cricket broadcasting but I think it's entirely reasonable to suggest three more second tier sections could be added to that open area. That would equate to more than 2100 extra seats. So it's fair to suggest that closing that open section of the stadium would result in the capacity reaching about 32.5k which is essentially the crowd that showed up to Adelaide Oval tonight. Even though the Power-Tigers clash only pulled 33k tonight, it honestly sounded like a Grand Final! You could even argue 32k showing up to a 32.5k stadium is an even better atmosphere than 33k showing up to a 53.5k stadium.

I hope I live long enough to see something like that at Metricon, it would be fantastic , sadly at the age of 52 and the Suns history I’m not sure it will happen in my life time

If we can time our run up the ladder/premiership window with the bid for the 2032 Olympics (which looks entirely possible right now) then I think it's very reasonable to suggest a permanent upgrade to 32.5k seats at Metricon is possible within the next 10 years. Los Angeles was awarded the 2028 Olympics in September 2017 so you'd expect an announcement regarding the 2032 host to come in the next 18 months and then the planning for stadium upgrades will come in the following few years. A permanent upgrade to Metricon would look something like this when completed:

It's also very likely that a successful Olympic bid will involve the creation of an east-west light rail spur from Broadbeach to Nerang with a stop right outside Metricon. This would essentially guarantee 70-80% of the Gold Coast population has easy access to Metricon via public transport and current predictions suggest our city will be nearing 1 million people by then.

Essentially I'm saying the next 10 years could be massive for us so hopefully you're around to see us reach our potential.

i agree. They also need to utilise the river. A ferry service would be ideal

How after more than a decade can getting into the blue car park at Metricon still be a ******* joke

edit: and why in gods name do they change the entry, ******* useless
This is why we desperately need a light rail stop outside of Metricon that heads west to the Nerang train station and east to Broadbeach/Star Casino/Pacific Fair. Add in a ferry service as well so not everyone exits the stadium to the west. Amazing that only 11k people caused the chaos we saw tonight. Clearly they're managing it pretty poorly because you would have thought there was at least 30k with how much they struggled to disperse people after the game.

Go to a big game at the MCG with 80k+ people and you'll be amazed at how few issues they have. The stadium is well serviced by train and tram stops so they never really have any issues like we saw tonight.

your doing it wrong.
seriously save the money and just park at nerang station. plenty of parks. 5 min shuttle bus to and from the game. No traffic in or out of station.

Looks like Metricon won't be used for the Olympics with the announcement of the Gabba's redevelopment to become a 50,000 seat stadium for the games
