MFC given 2 million

How long do the Demons have to pay back the extra $750,000 they're getting from the AFL?

A year?

Two years?

MCC members shouldn't donate $1 million to the Demons just because Melbourne have a bad administration and can't find a sponsor.

That million is coming out of MCC subscriptions.

If the Demons dont start making profits soon then they are in serious trouble. Right now they are a cancer on the AFL's lung and if they continue to go the way they are going then the AFL's only option will be to get surgery and have that cancer removed.

So on the one hand we have clubs working hard, developing viable business models and even taking some risks to increase wealth (see Collingwood) and on the other hand we have badly managed clubs, with seemingly no idea what they are doing on field and off field who just put their hands out for more money each year....

What exactly is the point of managing a business well when clubs who are abysmal in that regard simply get handouts?

Its not like Melbourne have suffered some sort of one off hit to revenue, they are simply unsustainable and have been for some time.

As opposed to the 1.25m that Carlton was getting a few years back. THis increase of 750,000 takes into account the vast amount of Sunday games we get and lack of free to air, as opposed to Carltons 6 Friday night and something like 16 free to air games that Carlton are recieving despite their limited recent success.

We know that we have to get the finances in order withing the next few years, but i think at the present time that 1 million from the AFL is justified.

I hope the Dees can sort themselves out on this one. They look to have a hell (pun intended) of a lot of work ahead of them.

While it is good to see Melbourne stronger,

I do have to ask where North's 2 million was when we were declared unviable just a little over a year ago.

I have no issue with the CBF, but come on, we pulled ourselves out without help, so can they.

I purchased a North Membership last year to help you guys out.

Any help that we get from the AFL/MCC or whatever, it all counts.

Cheers!

I'm not in any way having a go at you guys, or money you get from the AFL etc.

Just making the observation that like us, you have plenty of work ahead ...

I think it's fair to say that the AFL has other plans for north.

Not what I want - no way at all, I love the rivalry - but I reckon the AFL wants you guys shipped out ASAP.

Nah, I disagree. The AFL are bullies and cowards. We've stood up to them, they'll pick on someone else.

I agree that there is still every chance that a club will move to the GC. It won't be us though. In fact, I reckon people will be surprised at just who might put their hands up for such a deal (and no, that's not meaning you guys!)

Tasmania desperately want a team (and apparently have a good business plan with major sponsors already lined up) so it would seem logical to relocate the Demons to Tasmania to secure their future aswell putting a AFL team into the only state which currently doesnt have one.

So its ok to be prop,t up by an individual....who may go broke, but not by an institutional group thats been around for ever ?...

I for one hope this financial assistance helps the Demons and that they are able to work their way through this. I don`t want to see any club go under.

Agreed on the Dees. Hopefully this jolts the element of their support that continues to believe 'there needs to be a Melbourne' or 'the AFL won't let the oldest club go under' to their senses.

I would have thought you would have had more empathy towards Melbourne`s situation, given the financial dramas the club we support has gone through in recent times.

LOL. It is reporting from the coalface mate.

When a club is going through difficulties it really is a time for its supporters to let go of any complacency they may have and to sign up as members, get along to games, etc - basically make their support tangible so that the club will benefit.

I know it was pleasing that when Carlton started stuggling (due to its own silly fault of course) that we then had a period of very high memberships. I know I hadn`t ever been a member (as I lived interstate) and it prompted me to sign up in 2002.

In actuality the tv rights would increase if the Demons relocated to Tasmania and it would turn the demons into a positive contributer instead of a constant drain on the AFL's resources.

Melbourne Demons - Drain on the AFL
Tasmanian Demons - Will increase the AFL's tv rights deal and for the most part be self sufficient.

Yep, having been through similar ourselves, I know what you mean. Which makes me a wee bit concerned at the attitude of SOME Melbourne types. Hopefully this kicks any complacency they may have into touch.

Not having a go at you, but Melbourne supporters being complacent is a complete myth. We are 5,000 members up from this time last year and have together raised $3 million for the club's debt demolition program earlier this year.

Not bad for a club sitting last on the ladder.

Mate we beg to differ as the supporter and actual member numbers vary so much.

How much supporters does it show and not members for the MCC ?
