Universal Love MFC History Draft

I'd like to finish my 22 with one of my favourite MFC players, not because of anything he did on field but because he was an enormous tripper.

Brent Crosswell (48 games, 57 goals)

image1134

  • Known as "Tiger" because it was what he called people when he didn't know their name

  • It took just six weeks for Crosswell to fall out with Barassi. Late in the first quarter of the round 6 loss to Geelong at the SCG Crosswell gave away a free kick that led to a goal and surrendered the quarter time lead. He was dragged from the ground and when the coach came to address his side and give Crosswell a piece of his mind the two clashed and the player stormed away. Demon team manage Max Scales convinced Crosswell to return but Barassi sent him away again. Crosswell returned later and broke his right thumb. During the following week it was suggested in the newspapers that Crosswell was free to any club who wanted him, but Barassi rubbish the reports saying "Who would I argue with?"

  • In Round 21, 1982 Crosswell was reported for striking Michael Moncrieff and announced that he would not bother to attend the tribunal hearing as he was going to give the game away anyway. He relented, but the suspension ensured he would never play again.

  • Describing himself Crosswell said "They think I'm psycho, like nitro glycerine, half crazy, sulky petulant. Certain elements of my game just don't appeal to Australians. They think of the things I do as ostentatious, lairising. I do it because I feel like doing it".

  • He also wrote the greatest footy article ever.

127 games for 116 goals, he won a best and fairest in the other dark era for the team in 1978. mostly though I'm picking him for his dashing good looks.

You bastard. I was planning on posting that picture with my last pick. No stats or explanation required.

Combing through lists for my next selection, I reckon it would be much more fun to mock draft the shittest MFC sides in history.

Hayden Lamaro #1 pick? 2 games, 2 losses, 2 possessions, 2 frees against.

It would get depressing very quickly, one combined team would be more fun IMO.

Charlie Streeter.

Honours:

Premiership Player - 1926
Victorian state player - 1921 (2 games)
150 Heroes selection
Life Member - 2005
133 games, 10 goals

A premiership back pocket, Streeter slots straight into my first 18. That allows Bourke to play in a forward pocket, which I think strengthens my overall side (and its flexibility).

Do we really want to do emergencies?

If so, I'll pick 2 of 3 of "Fabulous" Phil Carman, Martin "I need a drink" Pike and "Iron" Byron Pickett. Flavour.

(Log in to remove this ad.)

#166 - Eric Glass
78 games / 135 goals, leading goalkicker in '36. Midfielder who played forward in later years, formed a good combination with Norm Smith but then left just before the hattrick of Premierships in '39-'41.

#167 - Byron Pickett
29 games / 16 goals. Injured and past it when he landed here, but could still hit players like a truckload of bricks and was occasionally brilliant. Cost himself a handful of games when he failed to show up in his last season after texting Daniher that he was too hungover to play. Adds a touch of campaigner to what reads like a far too gentlemanly team.

Vic Cumberland.

One of the best in 1900 grand final, played more at the Saints but still managed 50 games at the Dees at the beginning of his career. A quality footballer, he went on to win a Magarey medal in the SANFL.

49 games for one goal, Garry Lyon called him one of the best defenders he'd played with, sadly his back gave way in his third season and he was done. The 94 side was so strong for key position talent David Neitz was our 6th big playing third tall in defense. He'd be by far out best defender in our current team.

Paul Prymke.
