All these pussy threads about how the Hawks play dirty and rah rah , who gives a shit
They do everything to win, and Id be proud to have Hodge Mitchell and co represent my footy club
When we start falling behind, maybe its not the worst thing to give someone an ear massage in a marking contest.. might miss a week or two but then the opposition knows atleast that they cant take easy marks
How many players have we had suspended over the last 10 years?
Dawesys piss weak elbow push last year?
Sylvias coathanger against the tiges in 2011 or 12

Cant think of much else

Was discussing the same thing with a mate the other day. Talked about Hodge and Mitchell being dirty bastards, I hate them but I wished they played for us for the last decade!

We definately need more Aaron Vandenberg types. Players who play with ferocity, hunt the ball and HATE being beaten in a contest, not thuggish, but y'know "if the ball is in my vicinity it's MINE". It's these half-hearted, timid efforts at competing that irritate me even more than the basic skill errors. Natural competitors who are very resilient are attributes that should be mandatory for all our draftees going forward imo.

It is actually hilarious how different we look when VDB is out there compared to when he isn't. His main goal is the ball, if you're in the way bad luck. Along with Viney they are the only two players that tackle with any form of aggression as well.

Trenners sling tackle stands out for me, but essentially I know what you mean

Petracca is a competitive beast, bull at the gate type player. Hates to lose a contest and genuinely tackles to hurt....he will be a huge in for us as far as physicality goes.

I love that Jesse gets into guys at the first bounce and I would love to see more of it from our senior guys.

Bring back Tapscott.

That massive hit on Fasolo sticks in the memory. There was a bloke who liked to lay a brutal tackle.

Too bad he couldn't run/stay fit.

Losing petracca at the start of the season i think had a major mental impact on the team, let alone what he would have offered onfield (Vandenberg was however an excellent replacement). Hes just such a bubbly, positive kid with an arrogance about him and some venom too, so un-melbourne. I can remember Christian Salem saying there was a 'sad vibe' about the place when he went down. Such a damn shame.

Actually, now that I think about it, back when Dunn was playing alternately as a kind of a forward and a kind of a spud, he had a spot of the angries about him. I remember him getting suspended at least once for punching someone. He went off a few times - it was a definite characteristic for a bit - usually at the dumbest moments for the dumbest things.

Anyway, that was before Paul Roos arrived, put him in the defence and started him on a course of lithium or something.

The lack of suspensions is actually a very clear indicator that we're just nowhere near aggressive enough. We're not anywhere near the line on this.

I think they'd be happy playing in a successful side.
Hodge's team mates seem to like him. Same with Ballantyne.
There would be more thuggish sides that aren't successful than ones that are.

If you need to hurt people to be competitive you're a psychopath, not a good footballer.

And then he went on to finish top 5 in our B&F.

Dunn was a hotheaded player, yeah, but mostly it resulted in stupid free kicks and momentum-sapping 50m penalties... not Hodge-style suspensions. You could argue that the second type has value from a cultural sense, but Dunn's way of causing trouble was pointless and silly.

No - agree totally he is in no way in the Hodge bracket. He was more a see red, do something stupid type. I'm pretty impressed with his reinvention actually. A while back I didn't think he would ever be good enough and thought he should be dropped. And there was the moustache as well, which didn't help things. He's really steadied and improved under Roos and as a defender.

I think I have wandered away from the MFC victims theme though, so please carry on.

I don't think players like Brayshaw, Brayshaw, and Hogan would be as pleased to play alongside a thug like Tony Greene as you might think.
Maybe a couple of joints with Lumumble would help Toby be slightly less psychotic.

If we can't win games, at least we could win the fights. Last couple of years we've been losing those as well :(

I doubt there was one Melbourne supporter who ever imagined he could be a very solid full back

Have we even had one player suspended this year? Even a bump that accidentally went high? anything?

Nup, duty of care can **** off, you need to push the line to be succesful or else there is gonna be someone willing to do more

I'm sure former players like Robbie Flower and Jim Stynes would be thrilled to see MFC players start a fight for the sake of it.
How did that go for Robbie and Jim? No flags, 1 GF between them.
