Well well well. here we are. I'm just gonna say. I. wasn't. that. impressde.
I mean yeah competed really well and crashed the packs which was great but man that set shot was ****in mongrel punt and he looked a little slow out there defensively. I mean Pav is not exactly a pressure machine but Apeness I thought was defnesvly lacking a bit.

It was his first game. I think it's fair enough if he was nervous kicking his first set shot. I thought he showed a lot of aggression and competitiveness for a key forward on debut. Could've clunked a few if the ball wasn't so slippery. Will come good and showed some encouraging and promising signs.
I remember Fyfe's first set shot.... what a mongrel. Pretty sure he missed directly in front from like 20m out.

Fair points! To be honest I was hoping for a bag of 3 or 4 but I'll concede and say I had too high expectations

Yeah you definitely set the bar a bit high for a young lanky lad on his debut! He might grab a bag next week though

He's definitely less than that. I remember either Ross or Apeness himself saying in the pre-season that he was supposed to lose a bit a of weight.
Ross in the presser: "He's a brutal competitor, we worry about him hurting our guys."
I'm on the record as saying I want him to weigh more than Tomahawk.
At 19 years old he's providing the same pressure Hawkins does in the forward line. I agree, i think other teams would waltz out of our forward line with Ape and Pav, but he looks a reasonable succession plan.

Thought it was a decent debut. Did some nice things, got to good positions & lead/competed well. Pretty hard to debut on a former AA defender in Frawley but. Thought he was held a few times & deserved some kicks. Wish he slotted that goal.
We'll call him the "Bowlin' Ball" now.

His defensive pressure isn't bad for a big guy. He could definately chase a bit more, but his presence is scary for a first gamer. Wouldnt be taking him on, just in case, so he does add something in that sense.
Imagine him at Full-Forward, with a Fyfe type at CHF, gese we'd be dangerous.

Apeness took a couple of games to find his feet in the wafl but by about his third game he was starting to get some confidence. I hope he can get a run of games now to see how he copes. Based on what I saw of Gumby yesterday, at this point in time, Apeness is the club's leading candidate for the FF role. With a little over a minute left in the first qtr, Apeness attempted to gather a ground ball in the goal square and crunched a dee with a bump. I love that aspect of his game.
Love the physicality of him, it will be a bonus for him down the track as he continues to mature.
Players will give him the extra split second of time which will give him the chance to mark easier and kick opportunistic goals.

Great to hear. So many of these big fellas as soft. Never had a need to enforce because when you're two heads taller and intimidating, why would you ever need to in under 14s? I didn't see a massive amount of the game, but just hearing that he got involved is great.

In terms of statistical output it wasn't anywhere near an amazing performance- 5 disposals, 2 marks, 3 tackles and a behind. But he definitely provided a competitive option in the forward line in terms of crashing packs and bringing the ball to ground. I think this is what fans are most excited about, compared to Clarke and Taberner bending like twigs in the wind once there's a contest marking situation.
Both Apeness and Taberner are different styles of forward so it will be interesting watching them both develop going forward and how our game plan adjusts around them (or vice versa). Taberner is much more suited to running all day and playing further up the ground and providing a marking option on the wings. Apeness on the other hand is the pure play full forward type - much more about size, quick leads and contested marking.
