Ive seen a lot of 'highlight' videos where the ball is being sprayed all over the joint...not so much here

ive seen footage of nic natanui that makes him look like a football genius, when in reality he is not a smart footballer, there is footage that makes daniel gilmore look like another adam goodes, when we all know it just wasnt the case. unfortunately we are just going to have to wait and see as highlight reels are just that

. Absolute ball magnet, superb fitness, excellent size, just a little bit slow (yes I'm aware of his draft camp stats, they don't represent how he plays) and lacks hurt factor. He could possibly play as a tagger if necessary with his incredible endurance.

I wouldn't say he's 'very skilled', though - he's reliable, but he'll never wow you.

Sounds like a Priddis type?

Should be ready to fit in to the bench in round 1.
Very skilled player.

any thoughts about him or any new recruit

I have watched him play at Werribee for two years and was really surprised that he wasn't picked up in the National Draft to be honest.

His skills mean that he is quite versatile, he played as a hit up forward for us when he first came down to Werribee but was later given a midfield role and performed very well he was given a go there.

Am a football analyst/statistician at VFL club Werribee so have seen him up close on and off the field for two years, a great reward for a super football but also a great bloke.

Saw your article Benjamin...

I would hardly call the 22nd best player at freo the messiah, which is what the OP alluded to. He would appear to fill a need as an inside accumulator, especially considering Palmer is coming off a knee and may be eased back in.

We have a lot of players at Freo now who are capable of 15 quality possessions a game, but we do lack the players who can go out and get the big numbers like Swan, Pendles, Bartel. While I agree that is premature to say he would be automatic 22 now, there is a NAB cup to prove his worth.

Exactly! No one is talking him up to be the next Judd or a messiah, or even a star! And no one has said that the club should up grade him before Feb. I think Salim is a tad sensitive at the moment.

Barlow is just another well credentialed player coming out of the state leagues and I rate him highly having watched him at close quarters for over two years now, he certainly deserves his opportunity.

He may not be the next mesiah or answer to all of Fremantle's problems, but he certainly will help to add some depth to your midfield and forward line depending on where the coaching staff decide to play him.

For mine, that's all I'm expecting of him. If he shows the same determination and application that has got him his opportunity then he will be a welcome addition to the team and good luck to him.

Just out of interest, Ben, have you seen much of Alex Silvagni or have any better knowledge of him than those of us in the west?

I've only seen bits and pieces of him during my involvement with Werribee, but from what I have seen has been good.

He's a tall midfield type he likes to get his hands dirty, goes in hard at the footy and should be a welcome addition to your defensive set up at some stage within the next year.

Apologies for not being detailed enough.

That's as best as I could put it.

For anyone interested, make sure you check out Chris Mayne talking with Barlow and Silvagni just like I have.

I think Barlow is still a bit surprised as up until the rookie draft he was actually training at Essendon and being a Victorian boy, no doubt wanted to stay here in Melbourne.

He'll love it over here. Beaches, gorgeous girls, friendly people, the Freo atmosphere. Being a country lad I doubt he would miss the Melbourne scene too much and you're previous comments suggest he is pretty level headed and a decent bloke so he'll have his focus on the right things anyway.

I think that being level headed will be an advantage for him considering that the full time AFL environment is something new because he's coming from training three nights a week to doing it virtually every day.

Wouldn't be surprised if he has transferred his university studies though, unfortunately I can't remember what he's studying as the discussions with usually centered around footy or things other than study etc.

A very personable and approachable sort of guy which I'm sure will be appreciated by everyone at the Fremantle Football Club and the fans will like this about him too.

That interview with Chris Mayne is on FTV as well for anyone that might be interested in hearing from Michael or Alex Silvagni.

Just checked out the interview - that's a hell of a bouffant hair do young Alex has!!

I think Barlow having a boarding school background is probably a benefit for settling on the other side of the country too.

Yes it does count for him (Barlow) with regards to relocating to another state from Victoria, I that there have been a number of young draftees from here that have have serious home sickness related issues.

What were your first impressions of the two boys from the video everyone, Selggad included?

Pretty hard to say much based on a quick interview that doesn't really probe. Having said that, they both presented pretty well and seemed like nice enough young blokes. Silvagni has been here a bit longer and seems pretty happy with the place which is a good start. Barlow I think is still getting used to the idea he has made it onto an AFL list, albeit as a rookie, but seemed pretty pleased. Main impression was that if Silvagni got out the Brylcreem he could challenge Jason Dunstall for the best rockabilly rebel look in recent years.

It's pretty obvious Barlow has been picked in the same vein as Broughton, ie plug in and play, there's no point continuing to play him in the lower leagues, he's had 3-4 years, proven himself and cost virtually nothing.

He'll play in the main side early on, from what I've seen he is pretty one sided, but the thing I like about him is his diposal by foot, he is very deliberate when it comes to placing the ball on his boot and very rarely does he miss a target on his right.

Left foot is another story but his pace and agility hide this to a degree.

There's some nice left footers on that vid

Pretty much. If he has a good preseason and NAB cup he'll be the first rookie elevated. Look forward to seeing how he goes. Wish De Boer could be elevated as well, but I think we can be more patient with him.

Ruffles will surely be on the LTI?
Did his knee in round 17?
So we could elevate them both...
