Michael Barlow

It will be interesting to see if he is played in the midfield or if he will also spend time as a forward as well, he's versatile in that he can play .

Thats why i think he should be in round 1. Might not play midfield but could play forward all game and chip in with 2 or maybe 3 goals and rack up 15 disposals.

i say defitnetley give him an actual afl game. by round 10 im sure we'll all prefer him over matt deboer who as people have said hasn't proven himself at afl level. all he's proven is that ( like all the other freo players ) is that you can't rely on him getting clean possession when you need it. Like against Melbourne in round 20 he dropped a number of marks.

I'd hardly call De Boer a proven AFL player.

He played a tagging role for the majority of the season, in a underperforming midfield, hurt by quite a few injuries.

He was a decent player at 18's level, no star.

Is that what you have against Barlow?

He didn't come through the TAC system?

Again, averaging over 30 disposals a game in the strongest state league in the country, and almost winning its best and fairest as a 21 year old eclipses anything De Boer has done, that includes playing 17 AFL games.

If Barlow was on an AFL list last year, he would of played, going on his VFL form.

Hell, he would of played all season if he was at Melbourne for example.
Geez on that he would have been B&F,captain and president if he was at the Kangas
PS Your an idiot if you think VFL form is even close to AFL

Wow a 60 goal a year mid forward sitting on the rookie list, definate waste and your spot on ,will definately get the nod over Deboer and probably Pav,Mayne,Balla and anyone else who/s a mid or forward and the problem with the list not being able to get a clean possesion can be fixed by making Barlowe part of the leadership group and the clean possesion mentor. I/m sure Pav,Hase and the rest would welcome the advice from someone who has acheived the heights in the Vfl that Barlowe has.
PS change your moniker to Barlowe is a gun ,Morabito/s unproven, hasnt played VFL :thumbsu:

lol. How about Barlow4Brownlow....it rolls off the tongue nice and easy.

Looks like has moved on from Morabito and Silvagni, who was his pre-rookie draft flavour of the month. I didnt see any mention of Barlow at the time...and now ..all of a sudden... he is the bomb.

Nothing wrong with being optimistic about players...and Barlow does look pretty good....but its a big step up in class from the VFL.

Lets just see how he, and any other player who hasnt debuted yet, goes in the NAB Cup first before we start all the talk about round 1 selection.

We might have to get all the wafl players to serve an apprenticeship in the VFL before they play afl, otherwise they simply wont cut the mustard. Rising star winners Palmer and Rich were just flukes the last 2 years, only serviceable wafl players that got lucky. Now if they'd played vfl their talent would be undeniable.

Check out HFF_07 on the Essendon Board for more information on Alex Silvagni.

Thanks Yaco55, checking out Essendons reserves are we :D (Just kidding)

Do you have a link by any chance?

What would you like to know ach72??

Alex Silvagni, 192cm (approximately), 90+kg (again, approximately).

Sollid tall key position defender who did reasonably well in the VFL this year playing for the Casey Scorpions. He has a good strong set of hands, and his kicking is ok, although on occasions he has struggled with goal kicking (that should not be a detterent, he is a defender :D). Named FB in the team of the year 2008 and really shone again for Casey again this year. He is a good spoiler and reads the play well, is not blessed with out and out pace, but enough to keep pace with a strong hard leader like a Roughead.

The one thing that has dettered me from Silvagni is the fact that when he is beaten he gets towelled up. He will drop his head, and have brain explosions. He showed promsing signs in last years finals, but then opposed to a more dominant player (I think it was Nick Sautner from memory) he went into free fall. Giving away a free kick, then a subsequent 50m penalty. I also have quesiton marks over his ability to play out all 120 minutes of an AFL match. I am saying that on the back of Casey being a far superior side than the sides they played (when I watched), but Alex does tend to drop in and out of games, this should improve in an AFL enviroment however.

I think, for a rookie prospect such as Alex Silvagni, you have done well. You can only give the kid a go and hope that he takes on board everything that people teach him. Hopefully he can become a solid player for you as I think that is all he may become.

Hope this helps

Thanks

Cheers HFF_07. I think if he can be as solid as a Grover or like he will be well worth the effort.

OK.

You're extremely foolish if you think AFL games listed next to one players name makes them automatically better players.

Sam Mitchell, Dale Morris and Matthew Boyd will all attest to that, all being All Australians.

The simple fact remains, there alot of players running around in state leagues that are far better players than some young players on AFL lists, but "potential" ensures their opportunities.

By your reckoning Matt De Boer was a far better player than Liam Anthony at round 12, 2009.

By pure magic, he happened to average in the top 20 in the AFL for disposals, based only on a career in the WAFL and VFL upto that point.

Magic.

Silvanghi was our second choice, Thompson from Claremont was approached but declined.

No one is saying De Boer>>>>Barlow just because he has 15 AFL games next to his name. What people are saying is that De Boer has shown he can play at AFL level. Barlow hasn't. His VFL form has earned him a chance, but it won't guarantee him success. No one knows how Barlow will go at AFL level. He may be the next Judd, or he may be the next Head. Only time will tell.

I think both players will be good, solid afl players but atm it is impossible to compare them as Barlow has played 0 afl games and Deboer only a handful. I dont see the point in bagging one or the other though, so lets just give them both more of a chance, as they both have a fair bit of potential imo.

Well actually, that's exactly what's been suggested.

No one is saying that they know for sure that Barlow will make it at AFL level, there's only opinions stating that Barlow looks impressive on exposed form and is a good fit to be promoted because of "needs" basis. A few people have got a tad sensitive over the fact that De Boer may be overlooked, and that's fine but don't take it out on Barlow, or the people that express those opinions. And just because De Boer has played AFL doesn't make him a better player than Barlow or an automatic selection to be upgraded, otherwise they would've found room for him on the list at season's end like they did for Broughton.

Remember, De Boer was very lucky to be given opportunities at the top level last year. He only did so because of our terrible run with injury, it certainly wasn't because he was burning up the place in the WAFL. So he was lucky, and he did well as a tagger and we got to see him at the top level.
Until Barlow is afforded those opportunities, you're right, we won't know how he'll go, but it won't stop anyone predicting on exposed form how they think he'll go or how Silvagni or Sibo will go or even 12 months ago there was plenty of people commenting on De Boer and Pearce before they'd played a game at the top level. Christ, there was whole thread with about 100 posts about how Brock was going to be a star before he'd even played a game!

De boer wasnt being compared to any one else apart from Barlow so why bring Anthony into the equation, this is about two Freo listed rookies, no one here gives a toss about Anthony.
The reference to Mitchell.Morris,Boyd being AA and playing VFL is irrelevant, young or not so young, draftees have to come from somewhere and AA/s come from all pathways be they no 1 picks or the lowest rookie.Because a rookie comes from the VFL doesnt guarantee he/ll make it .For every three that do theres 50 who dont.
Would you like a list of the WAFL AA/s :D

Salim, MORABITO IS GUN WASNT SAYING that if your a vfl player ur better than anyone else.

for some reason you have teased him and been angry when all he has said is that he think Barlow will probably be able to start on the bench for round 1. No one has compared him to de Boer. In fact ur the one that started it by comparing de Boer to him so READ what IT SAYS

and i also think that he will be able to start round 1:):):):)

I'll be hopefully having a chat with Michael early next year and will write a feature article on his rookie listing by Fremantle.

Will post a link on here for anyone that would be interested in having a read of it once I have written it and it has been published.

I would say most of us would be interested. Cheers Ben:thumbsu:
