This is the best news I've heard all day.

Although you would have to be very niave to think that he 'quit'.

From a future perspective, some lulz that the (likely next) Captain of the Test team (highest sporting honour in Australia, certainly cricketing honour anyway) won't be playing in CA's fancy new T20 tournament next Summer. Unless Clarke is only retiring from international T20 cricket ("I'm retiring from international Twenty20 cricket" were his exact words, with no discussion of domestic T20s).

He's rubbish in this form, but why is he quitting? Shouldn't he be trying to lead Australia in as much cricket as possible, seeing as he wants to be captain?

his batting form is garbage at the moment, his t20 battinghas never been good - any chance he's been tapped on the shoulder?

Given Clarke's current batting woes I think him moving away from the slash and bash of 20/20 is a great thing for him and Australia.

:thumbsu: GOLD!

Very disappointed to see that Nannes has been effectively dropped from the side, though, for Brett Lee. What the hell has he done to warrant a game after all this time, especially at the expense of someone who's been in the side for about 12 months now and done a good job? Maybe they hadn't reached their quota from NSW?
It's a perfect example of why Australian cricket is in the shit right now. Selections based on how high someone's profile is, rather than whether they're the one best for the job, or most deserving. The sooner Hilditch etc go, the better.

You are joking right, yes Nannes was unlucky, but in the One day comp this year. Nannes has taken 10 wickets at 30 with a strike rate of 35 where as Lee has taken 15 at 25 with a strike rate of 30. If anything Nannes should have been picked in front of Pattinson who has only taken 6 wickets. The selectors clearly considered lee and pattinson candidates for world cup and nannes not

What a completely rubbish generalised statement! So when Gilchrist was in his prime, you would have suggested he only play one form, not both, would you? Of course not, these things have to be considered on a case by case basis. Some of our players have the game for both T20 and tests, and some don't.

White deserves to be the T20 captain because he's our best T20 batsman and has proven credentials as an excellent leader. This elevation neither helps nor hinders his attempt to get in the test team, that's a completely separate issue and should be considered as such.

As for Clarke, he's made the right decision (if he made it rather than the selectors making it for him) because his place in the side couldn't be justified on batting, so he's done the right thing for selection by stopping us having to pick a bloke who's not in our best T20 batting lineup just because he's the captain.
spot on!!! Best decision made my clark...and if he returns to tests late next next in elite batting form after sorting out his game I will gain some sort of respect back for him for making this important decision

His one day record, particularly the last year, is pretty damn good, especially handy if quick wickets fall.

Not at all a twenty 20 player obviously

Im disappointed Dan Christian isnt in the side. Fk he can smash a cricket ball and change a game in a blink of an eye and bowl a few decent overs.

Ahh the 24 run over v Krejza where he blocked the last ball so Ferguson could get his ton!

Over 41.1: Krejza to Christian, FOUR, fires it in at his legs but he opens up and whips it to the square leg boundary
Over 41.2: Krejza to Christian, SIX, sweeps this one for a maximum
Over 41.3: Krejza to Christian, FOUR, comes down the pitch, turns it into a full toss and drives wide of mid off for four
Over 41.4: Krejza to Christian, FOUR, gives himself some room and goes over the top of mid off for another boundary. 18 from 4 balls
Over 41.5: Krejza to Christian, SIX, he's swept this one from outside off deep into the crowd on the bank. Remarkable
Over 41.6: Krejza to Christian, no run, defended back to the bowler...maybe conscious of his partner on 98*?

Averages in low 20's with the bat and strike-rate of just a run a ball. If ya a batsman in a twenty/20 side.....average needs to be in the 30's at least and strike-rate 100+

Adios pup :thumbsu:

Obvious strategy by Clarke to show the Board and Selectors he will be focusing solely on the Test and 50 over Captaincy.
Clarke's decision is precisely why I am certain he will be no better a captain than Ponting. Not the decision but the way and timing he has made it . It shows knee-jerk response in a crisis. After the disappointment of the Ashes loss , a wise man would let a little time pass and thoughtfully appraise the situation after the emotion has died down.

My observation is that on the whole the best captains are calm and thoughtful individuals . Now Warnie could have been a great captain and some might say well he is not calm . Well he might be brash at times be I've never seen him flustered in a crisis.

When watching Ponting captain , yes he would make changes , but it was always like he was just randomly trying new things without observing what was happening and developing in front of him .

When I watch Clarke he seems a nervy ,quick talking person and at 29 you are seeing all of what you are going to get. In this last test he started of ok but then proceeded to make the same odd an ineffectual tactical moves as Ponting. eg Cook past 50 had made 0 runs down the ground so a short mid-off is put in?? Clarke please prove me wrong.

So funny the anti Clarke sentiment.

Fact- last season batting at 5, he was ranked number 1 in world batting rankings. Fast forward 10 months, Sack him, he is a dud….lol.

We have only two genuine guns in our pathetic team, Ponting and Pup.

Pontings class is undeniable, he has at least two years left (just like Lara, Tendulkar and AB way back when) Ponting at 4, Clarke at 5 will see us into the next re-build. All this Clarke bashing is just so pathetic.

it used to be so-o-o-o easy for him when he first started out

hmmm... but right now, it seems like his uppance has come

the michael clarke joke is the one where he tattooed the initials l.b. (lara bingle) onto his shoulder.

perhaps he should add a "w" onto that to spell "lbw" instead :)

Considering who is on the posters, how do you know this wasn't decided a while back and only announced now?

He's retired from a form of the game we play about 10 games in a year and which he is no good at. Not sure how important this is......

Fact: in his last 19 innings (10 Tests) he averages less that 25. Three 50's, all in the second innings, two in lost causes. When it really counts, the first innings, he has 145 runs @ 14.5. When you consider we were out of contention in at least two of the Tests by stumps on Day 2, you can see he is part of the problem.

Elite batsmen, sorry "guns", don't go to water because they have moved up one slot. And how this guy will get rubber stamped as captain in the next 12 months is frankly beyond me.

Will be sadly missed....

Nah. Perhaps now he should quit the test side to concentrate on being a bloke.
