We have been linked to Coad, for the last few weeks, and just wanted to get a few more knowlegable peoples opinions of the bloke.

What we know so far is that he is a 26 year old, who plays for Sturt in the SANFL. He came 2nd in the Sturt B&F this year. He is 193cm and around 90kg. Big lad, and can play KP at either end, usually features down back, but has put together some solid performances up forward.

He was heading to the Hawks last year, and would have been there had it not been for some paperwork error, or something along those lines.

With the Lions taking Maguire, i think it may be given some serious consideration, and i would not be against giving him a 1 year deal to see what he has to offer.

Your thoughts?
 
Obviously age is the real worry with this guy, being 26. Players are usually expected to peak during the years of 27-29 and having only one year of AFL footy under his belt before this time is probably too big of a risk. Whilst playing against the bigger bodies won't be a struggle, the pace of AFL footy may see him get caught out, as it does with many first year players.
 
I've seen plenty of coad of the past years, he became the Waite of the SANFL. Perfect swingman and great as a loose in defence especially. A real risk taker, often with bad results, but more likely he opens play up for others.

I think he could be a decent backup forward. He's definitely a good option as a rookie pick as he costs so little. I'll be dissapointed to lose him from Sturt if he doesnt get a games for whatever club he goes to though.

He also had a knee reco a year or two ago, didnt appear to have lost anything from it.
 
26 seems a ripe old age to be having your shot in the AFL, but I guess there are always Cinderella stories in all sports. How old is the oldest "recruit" to AFL?

I've seen plenty of Coady like the Sturt man above, and I just think there are better options for us. Coad's a good kick and smart enough player but I'm not sure he'd be quick enough at AFL level and his durability might be a little questionable - he missed a number of games last year with recurrent hamstring dramas.

I'm not sure if there's any youtube/other footage floating around of him, but the one I'd be looking at is young Matthew Jaensch. Very hard-working and clever half-forward who is probably the best set-shot kick in the SANFL. Really came into prominence in the SANFL finals series in 2009. His old man Brenton kicked about 12 million goals in the Hills Footy League in his career, and young Matty's one of those rare players where you can write the goal in the budget as he's lining up.

I've heard from one of his best mates that Brisbane are looking at him, but I'd love for us to get in first.

Your right about durability for Coad. I would still see it worth the rookie pick though.

Jaensch has been looked at by Port for a few years now, and is again training with them at the moment. Fades in and out of SANFL games too much for mine.

Fair call.

I guess what probably sways me towards Matty is his youth - he's got time to work on having consistent impact.

Coad may turn out to be a good get - who knows. You probably remember the long goal he kicked against Glenelg (I think) in the prelim this year. That kick was Fev-like.

To be honest, I'd be happy to have either of them get to Carlton. Haven't had any Sturt connection since Big Ben Nelson.
 
I want a tall more than most but what happened to our policy of not drafting players over 24?

I understand in making an exception for an exceptional proven talent (J Brown etc) but not for a player who has had enough chances in a lower league and has only 2-4 years left.

Seems odd and our of kilter with our drafting policy!

That's the thing though - yes he's solid enough to mix it up pretty well on a physical level but it wouldn't surprise me if there was a hartlett-esque twang or two if we picked him up.

That doesn't sound to promising. Has he had soft tissue issues previously?

Speaking of Hartlett, have you heard how he is progessing at West Adelaide?
 
Recurrent hammy dramas in 2008 HBF, although he got through 2009 ok.

Not sure about Harts but I know some people at Westies so I'll let you know when I hear anything about him.
 
Think Coady is a good choice as a back up option. The rookie drafts are always a massive risk.

I think you have better backman on your list, but with injuries he could come in handy.

With Otten out and Bock and Rutten with a couple of question marks over them, I wouldn't mind Adelaide picking him up to be honest.

He'd offer a better option up forward than Cloke if you consider our team balance. Assuming Kreuzer plays forward then you cant have another ruck there too as well as two playing rucks. Coad gives us more mobility in comparison, but yes less experience

Cloke has played AFL and did ok for us at times in games, Coad is what 26 has no AFL experience.

No matter what we'll be paying for some if not all of Cloke's wages this season.

If we are going to be paying him we might as well kept him around to play him if required, rtather than dump him and then bring in a mature age rookie to sit in the Ants all season.
