Michael Hussey called up as cover for Justin Langer

Cricket Australia today announced that Western Australian RetraVision Warriors batsman, Michael Hussey, has been called into the Australian Test squad as cover for Justin Langer who is nursing a fractured rib.

Langer is continuing to recover from the injury, suffered when he was hit in the rib-cage while batting for Western Australia during Sunday's ING Cup match against the Victorian Bushrangers in Melbourne.

Although a final decision on Langer's fitness has yet to be made, the National Selection Panel (NSP) has opted to introduce Hussey for the coming days in the advent that Langer is not capable of playing ahead of Thursday's first 3-Mobile Test in Brisbane.

NSP Chairman Trevor Hohns said: "The reports from team medical staff suggest that Justin will aim to practice tomorrow, but in the event that he's not fit to play, we want to have a player on stand-by with the squad in Brisbane.

"Although Justin has signalled his intent to train and make himself available for the Test, we must cover all of our bases and that's why we have selected Mike Hussey as cover.

"He (Hussey) has played some fine cricket for Australia in the one-day international arena, so he is familiar with the set-up within the national side.

"He is a quality top-order batsman in first-class cricket and we believe that he can fill a role in the Test side if required."

It is expected that Hussey will travel to Brisbane to join the Australian Test squad today.

congratulations to Hussey, well deserved.
I hoped jacques would get the call up at 26 he has the runs on the board and a longer term prospect.

Buchanan was quoted yesterday, that if Langer didn't come up, they'd select a specialist opener as a fill in, rather than a makeshift opener.

I guess that's what he's referring to. But then again, Ned Flanders doesn't pick the team - that's the selectors job.

So I take it that we will be looking at opening Hussey , am expecting him to do a very good job .
If he makes runs will they bring Langer straight back in?

If Hussey plays and makes runs, it'll improve his rating in the eyes of the selectors and probably put him ahead of Hodge for a permanent position in the lower order. But I;m sure Langer will be straight back in the side once fit.

Cricinfos stupidity is reaching new levels:

Hussey called to cover Langer

Cricinfo staff

October 31, 2005

Michael Hussey has been thrust into the Australia squad as cover for Justin Langer, who is fighting a fractured rib to prove his fitness for the first Test against West Indies on Thursday. Langer, who was hit while batting for Western Australia in an ING Cup match on Saturday, has not been ruled out of the side, but Trevor Hohns, the chairman of selectors, decided to give Hussey time to adapt in case he was asked to make his debut.

"The reports from team medical staff suggest that Justin will aim to practice tomorrow, but in the event that he's not fit to play, we want to have a player on stand-by in Brisbane," Hohns said. "Although Justin has signalled his intent to train and make himself available for the Test, we must cover all of our bases."

Hussey will join the team from Perth today and his impressive ODI performances since being recalled in March - he has an average of 119.25 in his past 17 matches - and position as a specialist opener pushed him above Brad Hodge and Phil Jaques. "Hussey has played some fine cricket for Australia in the one-day international arena, so he is familiar with the set-up within the national side," Hohns said. "He is a quality top-order batsman in first-class cricket and we believe he can fill a role in the Test side if required."

Do they realise that Phil Jaques IS AN OPENER?

Ok then , Hussey comes in to the side opens and makes a 100 .
Does he get dropped to make way for Langer to return , or does he keep a spot at the expense of someone in the middle order purely on form?

I think if he plays he will make way no matter what will happen in the test .

Mike Hussey = Average player whose stats are inflated by big scores in England.

His career in Australia hasn't been that special. I'm sorry WA nit-wits but thats FACT. :)
Huss is not average. Try watching him bat.

All Australian cricketers FC averages are inflated by high scores in England.

Huss= V.good

Garbage and you know it.

Don't argue fact with opinion.

I've seen him bat a fair bit live and on television.

He's decent, even good. But not international quality.

Guys like Lehmann and more recently Jacques ALSO dominate in the Pura-Cup, Hussey doesn't.

:) Have a nice day.

And how many times did he bail us out of trouble in the ODI Ashes series?

Hussey is a gun and deserves his selection.

Has always been a good limited-overs batsman, but his Pura Cup performances over a long period leave quite a bit to be desired.

He still has a good First Class average. The Australian selectors have obviously taken his one-day form into consideration.

I don't know why people on here keep crapping on about Phil Jaques, he's a long, long way down the pecking order. Hasn't done anything to warrant being in consideration.

Umm Hussey is a speciallist opener

Less than 12 months ago the best opener in the country was Matthew Elliott, Langer got injured, enter Simon Katich as makeshift opener, Langer ended up playing anyway but they went to the trouble to fly Katich down to Melbourne just in case, now that katich is in the side suddenly they dont want him to open

Oh well, Langer will play anyway

And that concept really works well for Brett Lee doesn't it.

Gee, these WA people really struggle to mount a convincing arguement. But keep trying Freeagles you'll get there soon.

Have a nice day :)

No he's not. Ponting just said he's close to selection.

Are you talking about the same Phil Jaques as everyone else? 2nd highest runscorer in Pura Cup last season, had several dominant English county seasons and opened this Pura Cup in hot form?

That's not anything to warrant consideration?
