absolutely classic contradiction...

I particularly loved the scientific methods you used to distinguish between fact and opinion - I can almost hear the headlines now:

"...and the team behind a scientific study into the Australian Test team has today announced that, despite inital indications that he could swing the willow, Mike Hussey is indeed only 'average'."

"It was previously thought by the Australian sporting public that he was in fact "pretty good" but this new research has cast new doubt on the West Australian opener, downgrading this belief from 'fact' to 'opinion'."

"The study involved charting the approval rating of one lone sports fan watching him on television 'a fair bit' to establish once and for all that he is not the bee's knees as thought by some."

...sorry to be a smartass Apollo but you had it coming - opinion is opinion buddy, don't try to dress yours up as fact without a bit of evidence

peace
never argue with an idiot ..he will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience ;)

Why The ******** Isnt Brad Hodge Playing
Because he isn't in the class of Hussey .
Hussey should have been selected in the side during the ashes series ...great to see him finally get a gig in the test side . he is way ahead of hodge and co. kudos to the selectors for getting one right .
as for all the Victorians whining on here ...tough luck !

Then why has he been in the squad previously?
They have the opportunity to give Hodge ago, as Katich is an opener and has opened before, but they decide to give it to Hussey, he wasnt born in NSW was he?

When did Hussey show he was the man for the job? In his 1 decent season out of the last few? But Hodgey has been making more runs each year than Hussey, so that clearly shows Hodgey is better than Hussey

Have to go back a few years to find a time Hussey had a better season than Hodgey

Oh but of course you hate Victoria, enjoy the game this week, I know I will ;)

Huss deserves it, has been around the ODI team for a while so he'd seamlessly slot in with the team.

His fielding's valuable, too, considering how we're been going in that department.

Hope he does well and cements himself in the squad, it was madness that he wasn't in the Test squad for the Ashes

I found this about Hussey on Baggygreen:

"...he averaged 79 in the 2001 winter, 72 in 2002 and 89 in 2003, then 36 in 2004 after moving to Gloucestershire. All the while, he maintained an equally consistent but less enviable Pura Cup average - 30 in 2000-01, 35 in 2001-02, 34 in 2002-03, 41 in 2003-04."

He did have a much better average in 2004-05 - 55.46 - on the back of a couple of huge double centuries. But that was still inferior to Jaques' 66.16.

I would have preferred Jaques myself - it's a pretty good time to blood a long term prospect. Hussey seems to enjoy himself in the middle order against risky bowling and attacking fields in the one-day arena, but I'm not sure how well that will translate to the test arena. Especially in the opening spot.

One thing that occurred to me is that our fielding is getting worse and worse lately. We know that Hussey is a very good fielder, and that may have helped swing things his way. I've heard that Jaques is not much chop as a fielder - can anyone shed any light on that?

Hodgey is also a superb fielder and in better form

Oh well, its no suprise, Hodgey is still the no1 middle order batsman in place for when Watson or Katich fail miserably

Ah, what the hell does that have to do with my post?

I was saying the SELECTORS 12 months ago wanted Katich as the next in line for a 1 test opening position, now the SELECTORS suddenly changed their policy and went with a real opener for the 1 off test

They wont bat Hussey in the middle order, he will open, he is an opener. But so is Katich (Well Mail never lasts more than 5-10 overs ;) )
Well, you started off with a quote from Buck to that effect- taken from someone else's post...haven't seen the selectors say a word about what they thought. Yes, they brought in Kato last year, but he has also stuck in the middle order....and now it is Hussey's turn. Let's see who opens on Thursday, shall we

Whinge away, eddie

Caught again, me bucko...

If Hussey bats middle order than the selectors should be shot

As everyone keeps telling us, he is a speciallist opener so a middle order spot is not what he deserves

Well done to Hussey.

Loved it when Langer emphasised that he hoped Hayden and Hussey would do a great job for Australia in just the 'one' Test match.

Pretty sure he will open. Even if he didn't, he'd still be a better selection than Hodge.

No what everyone is saying at all. Just you have a tanty.

Openers can also play middle order. Hussey is one such opener. Much harder for a middle order to open.

Umm Hussey is a speciallist opener

Less than 12 months ago the best opener in the country was Matthew Elliott, Langer got injured, enter Simon Katich as makeshift opener, Langer ended up playing anyway but they went to the trouble to fly Katich down to Melbourne just in case, now that katich is in the side suddenly they dont want him to open

Oh well, Langer will play anyway
One of your best posts Eddie :D

Sadly for Iddiott Elliott most first-class games are played in the City. :p
