Michael is ordinary!

His job is to stop his direct opponent kicking goals, is it not?

not really..... he is not a tagger but i can see where your coming from in the accountability area. But i can assure you nearly every week he is our leading clearence player.
Majority of our midfielders are outside players which makes them look good.....
and also Watson is a fantastic handballer.

What happened to my post baggin SirJmi.

This thread is one of the most silly ones I've ever read.

Bagging Mal when he is the least of our problems.

I have friends in high places. :thumbsu:;)

I would love to see how this thread would go on the main board away from the bias. I call a spade a spade. Big Mal struggles these days. It's that simple. :thumbsu:

Yeah, really struggles

He did not have a matchup all day practically yet still got it 19 times. He got it more than our midfielders in Dyson, Houli, Monfries, Lovett, Welsh.

He was great body on body whenever in contests. You need to save your energies on Mal who's a player mored than capable of doing his job and being part of another flag tilt.

You have to ask the questions on Dyson, Welsh, Monfries, Laycock, NLM, Lovett, Nash, Johns and a few others as to whether they are good enough to be part of the next premiership side.

wats this baggin mal. he has been good for us this year. against fev all the 1's on 1's he beat him but on lead lead he got beaten. noone will beat fev on the lead so why is it only mal gettin bagged. with good delievy no forwards will get beaten. thats half of our problems because our kickin into the forward line is shocking. if rocca had of played. mal would of beaten him. and how do u expect him to play on tarks or pendlebury. there was jsut no matchup for him 2day.

When we knew Rocca wasnt playing, why did we start Johns and Mal. It was ridiculous match ups - Tarkyn on Mal that was a joke....

Oppostion coaches know they can take advantage of Mals lack of speed and mobility. It is becoming extremely hard to find a matchup for him. Treadrea is the perfect matchup for him so lets see how well he goes this week. I won't be holding my breath.

Like in Round 1 when he matched up again Thompson after Thommo kicked 2 early and he kicked him quite

Like in Round 2 when he kept Hawkins goalless.

Like in Round 4 when he kept the Doggies forwards in check.

Mal has done his job this year. Don't know what game your watching.

IMO the Ryder match up vs Cloke was wrong.

Paddy did a good job against Reiwoldt but he is a different type of player to Cloke.

Riewoldt tends to play in short bursts with multiple short leads whereas Cloke is more of a long distance runner, running up and back from full forward to the centre.

Unfortunately Paddy doesnt have the tank to keep up with Cloke.

McPhee would have been a better match up as he the aerobic capacity to keep up with Cloke.

You underestimate how long the ball lives in our defensive 50.
Mal easily has the biggest average for punches in defence. Against carlton he had 12 to 3 QT. If he wasnt playing i reckon half of those 12 would be shots on goal for the opposition.

He has been great to get. Last year for example he played on Brown, Tredrea, Lynch, and Hall and between them i think they kicked 5 goals. These are his type of players, not medherst, lockyer, or pendlebury. To add to this he has helped make Ryder the player he is today.

You should be critising our midfield and lack of accountability. Mal looks 10 times worse a player because we never win a clearance.

Really showing your knowledge there arent you:rolleyes:

Mal Michael is an interesting topic. It was great that we got him as it enabled Fletcher to play off half back and use his talents for the greater benefit of Essendon. We didnt/dont have any ready made replacement for Fletcher at FB so it has given us time to groom another capable FB. Unfortunately at this stage there isnt any obvious FB ready to come into the side. Pears could be given a crack but really he is far too young. Id prefer him at CHB in the future with Ryder moving into the midfield. Michael may well retire at the end of the season which poses a problem for the Bombers. Do we move Fletcher back to FB or give Pears a crack at that position?
Essendon are in desperate need for another quality FB and I sincerely hope Daniher/Neagle are capable of holding down such an important position.

Care to comment on the actual OP?

Or you just prefer to say i know nothing about footy without actually giving any reason why.

Yes Michael is good for the structure of our team but he has had an ordinary year at best and is struggling big time.

I would love to see a stat on how many goals the guy has conceded this season.

It must be a competition high.

Week in week out his lack of speed is shown out.

I tohught he was one of our best again on the weekend, certianly in our top 8 or so. The amount of spoils he has and packs he crashes, not only against his direct opponent but unselfishly helping out his defensive teammates is a credit to him.

Others need to learn a lot from Malcolm....

BTW, I tihnk Glass has had more goals kicked on him than any other backman this year....

Mal has been playing great footy, including against Carlton.

Michael was not good against Carlton, he was ordinary. Nobody plays well when they have 7 goals kicked on them in less than 3 quarters. Having said that Knights should not have left him hung our to dry for so long as it was quite clear he was not good enough to go with Fev.

After thinking about it for some time i would say that that award could well go to Nathan Carroll. I didn't see Brissy play this week, was he on Bradshaw or Brown?

Mal had 13 spoils against Carlton

Fev had 2-3 contested marks.

Fev was kicking goals out of his arse that night, and getting brilliant delivery that Glass,Rutton etc couldnt stop. And Mal stuck to his task.

Far from our worst this season.

Don't think the point is whether Mal's been good, OK, or poor this year. He definitely hasn't been shocking nor has he been fantastic
The point is, it's a matter of what's he going to be giving us next year & year after
IMHO the time is nigh. Not a fan of cutting guys off at an arbitrary age limit (be it 30 or whatever) but I think we'd be better served in the big picture if he wasn't playing every week.

I'd like him to keep playing, and show the likes of Pears how to do it. I'd also like Pears and to a lesser extent Johns taking a greater role in the matchups in the backline. This weekend is the perfect time to play Johns on Tredrea and Pears on Westhoff, resting Michael/playing him on Lade/Brogan as they come forward.

What I'm trying to say is that we could throw Pears and Johns in the deep end, but it would be better for them, and for our sanity as fans, if Michael and Fletch hang around and guide them.

If Johns starts on Tredrea, gets well beaten, and Michael goes onto him and beats him, Johns can learn from it afterwards, rather than just struggling all game.

Isn't it just robbing Peter to pay Paul? Yes that would be the best way to do it, but is it really feasible? We've already got Ryder & Fletch down there atmo, don't want to go super tall
IMHO if we go in with Mal & CJ then we are lacking mobility. Nothing wrong with one or the other playing 2s
