Michael Jackson - Dead

I know you're a Tupac fanboy, but come on....

My parents probably wouldn't have even known who he was.

Theres only one Tupac song I heard before he died and that was California Love. Only reason hes 'famous' is because he was shot. To suggest Tupac is in the same universe as MJ as a musician is laughable.

Clearly Prince is far more talented.

And just because he's had X amount of #1s etc doesn't mean his songs warrant inclusion in any list of greatest songs.
Polished pop songs without much depth like most of todays RnB.

sure if we are talking about who the better guitarist is....

He's nowhere near Elvis or Lennon, but nobody was.

That being said, he was probably the closest thing to Elvis in modern times, and it's sad to see him go.

Arguably the definitive artist of his generation, his contribution to 'Pop' music, both as a kid, and an adult, as well as his influence upon the music video and performance side of things would be hard to top over the last 30 odd years.

No offense to his fans, but Tupac isn't anywhere near Jackon in terms of influence.

Jackson will be remembered as a great performer and a great songwriter. He wouldn't be in my top 20 favourite artsits, probably not even my top 50, but jee he wrote some great pop songs.

And Thriller was simply a phenomenom. Highest selling album of alltime and nobody is even close. 110 million copies sold. According to Wiki, ACDC Back In Black is second with 45 million. That's just amazing.

It is amazing what some people are saying here. MJ has to be in the top 5 all time pop artists. 'Off the Wall' was a brilliant album and I defintely put Jackson up there with Elvis, but behind Lennon. It would be interesting to see what % of people across the world know a Michael Jackson song. It would probably be higher than any artist.

RIP Michael.

It's great to see that on a board where everyone likes to think they know every thing you need to know about music, that the majority are full of shit.

"good pop songs and nothing more"

and then Tupac is compared to him?

Lmao thanks for the laughs!

Great and his best imo.

Tupac made some great music and is an icon of hiphop.

Michael Jackson made classic music and is an eternal legend of pop culture, owning every single country's music charts at one stage, another stage, and another.

Of course Tupac's death wasnt as big as Michael's.

Hip hop will never be universally respected. It's a genre that gets hated on and judged by people who know **** all about it. Ask any lad about hip hop and they think 50, Em (Even though he's great and respected in mainstream and underground hip hop) and The Game.

With bling, money, cars and hos.

Try ****ing Kweli, Mos Def, early Nas, Kool G Rap etc. What rock fans struggle with is that hip hop has better writers.

RIP Michael, **** it sucks saying that.

^I am willing to bet large copious amounts of money that anyone that hates on hiphop does not understand, let alone know, about the aspects of hiphop writing.

Eminem at his peak was a brilliant writer - people that hate on him just don't like his image and/or song content, which is fair enough (but to not recognise his talent is plain ignorance).

Michael Jackson had a tonne of respect for hiphop. Collaborated with the late Biggie, and was into beatboxing himself which actually led to him forming the basis of Billie Jean's production.

why is there a hip hop wankfest in this thread?

and you can bet a 'talented' hip hop artist will cash in and make a bass loop from a Jackson song to use in theirs.

For me, my favorites of MJ were his HIStory album, and his Jackson Five work. Jackson Five was amazingly genius for a bunch of kids, and HIStory was lyrically such a strong album.

And yet still have better lyrics than most rock songs of today.

I'll keep listening to Kweli and you can have Wolfmother.

Any lad who's 16 and under, all they know is Eminem, "fiddy" or *cringes* Soulja Boy. It's ****ing sad!

Stupid people shit me.

Talented hip hop writers - why the **** would you bold talented? do you really believe there isnt any talented hip hop writers?

I think he means that one who isn't talented will take advantage of it. I can already see 50 butchering it and using MJ's brand to cash in.

the most likely people to cash in on MJ's death would be someone without talent.

i'm not big into hip hop but there's certainly talented hip hop writers around. it's more the musical style i just can't get into personally.

i think what most rock lovers have against hip hop is that it is generally the trash hip hop that makes it mainstream - for instance i'd never heard of that Kweli lad till 15 minutes ago and just listened too a couple of his songs on the back of your post and he's a pretty sweet writer (once again though i'm just not into the style of music)

the hip hop that most people are familiar with is what you hear in clubs and it seems whoever can swear the most gets the furthest.

sure there is a lot of crap mainstream* rock n roll around at the moment, but some of the good stuff also gets through, which doesn't seem to happen in hip hop where most of the good stuff stays underground and doesn't get much exposure....

*lets face it, 95% of mainstream music at the moment is crap
