This deserves a bump.
Great player for Freo over the years. First came in 2006 in one of our first most successful years, then rebuild after rebuild and stayed through everything all the way up to 2013 GF and beyond.
239 games for the club, could've had his 250 if it wasn't for injuries.
Will miss MJ that's for sure. Weird drop on his kicking, but he could play when at his best

Love his ball drop. Unique and not exactly textbook.
It just punctuated his talent.
There will come a time when everyone looks like cyborgs playing, he was cut from a different sheet.

Great career.

In his prime he was one of the best defenders in the game. Could be creative, attacking and courageous.

Shame that injuries took their toll. I feel like he was never quite the same after his injury in the shocking home loss to Richmond in 2015.

I have enjoyed reading all of the posts in this thread & they kind of reflect Johnno's career with us.
Some not so good, but mostly good, & some excellent & over a long period of time.
I was talking a couple of years ago with an oppo forward scout who told me his advice to the coach was to keep the ball away from Johnson. Unfortunately that team did carry out that plan & I was there to witness the loss.
He was structurally so important when we were at our best, so thanks for the great career.
Also, I reckon he was the first player I saw in an AFL game line up sideways for goal, when on an angle. A move that was copied by a Geelong player & is now known as (in my opinion) the wrong Johnson method to kick for goal

As we’re in the business of giving games to players who can barely do up their bootlaces it shouldn’t be too much of a stretch to include both MJ and DP for the Port game it being NAIDOC Week. Too much to hope for I guess when you consider they were dropped for the Indigenous round.
In most clubs players who have been long term servants have been granted the privilege of announcing their own retirements from the game. Would have been nice to hear it from MJ and DP in person.

He was one of those rare players that could regularly make time stand still, he copped too much criticism for the rarer times it didn't come off and not enough praise for the many times it did. Thanks MJ, you were one of the good ones.

Maybe MJ and DP think they might go around again elsewhere. MJ to West Coke would be my guess (we'll take McGovern).

Was a great player. Loved the idiosyncratic forward ball drop that flattened his kicks and increased their speed.

i remember a couple times him either

1) kicking a ball like bullet that was so flat it basically had no arc on it, straight into a freo player's chest
2) kicking a ball and it flying along the ground straight to the opposition.

IT was a good kick when he was on but very risky and very susceptible to being smothered. When he was on though he was too agile to get caught.

So much this. So, so much this. Pretty pissed off at how this has come about tbh. Didn't Ross do this to someone last year too?

As long as DP and MJ were on the same page as the club, I don't have any issue with it. Maybe they would prefer not to have a press conference? But if they didn't have a say in how their retirement would be communicated publicly, that reflects pretty badly on the club in general - not just Lyon.
