What Michael Long did to Troy Simmonds was an absoloute disgrace and certainly not with in the spirit of the game. He should be suspended and not for the silly Ansett Cup, but for some rounds of the main season. I have never been a big fan of his and I am certainly not now. While I'm all fired up, Dean Wallis is no better. He is nothing but a thug. I hear he might retire. Thank God for that. How he is has got two premierships is beyond me when you see other great players that don't even play finals.

All great teams have great team members who fill various roles in the team. Wallis' role is not to be a skilled backmen rather to fill the void of toughman.(Not a good choice of word.)His role is to make sure that the backline is not intimidated by cowboys. I resent your ill-informed assessment of him as a thug. Apart from some pathetic wrestling charges, he has had a clean record over the past two years. In case you hadn't watched any Ess games over the year, he has been quite a good contributor and certainly deserved a spot in the team. In 93, he probably didn't deserve a spot but that's history now.

As for Long being a disgrace, I also disagree. If that is the worst thing he does in his career, I'd think he'd be pretty happy. Okay, it was an average attack on the ball, but this isn't completely new to grand finals. Long will be suspended of course, but it was a split second decision in the heat of the moment. Illegal-YES! Long is not a physical player yet is often targeted by physical people. He is a fair player and I'm sure he would probably change that particular moment if he could.

Hey!, what about Schwartz's attack on Jason Johnson as as the ball tumbled towards the boundary line. He ran right into his head. Just as reckless as the incident with Long.

Grow up will ya.

Michael Long delivers a hip and shoulder, and becasue Simmons head was "down", ne unfortunately gets carried off on a stretcher.

His head just happened to be in the wrong spot. It certainly wasn't malicious. It was just one of those things.

As for Wallis. Opposition fans hate him. I love that. Wallis can stick it up all of you, because he has two premiership medals. He is also the most repsected player at the club.

He has worked his ass off for 14 seasons to make the most of his ability, and he has done a marvellous job. He has hardly ever been suspended, and has been crucified by the media. He is a top bloke who deserves everything that comes his way. He copped a lot of shit after last years prelim, so I am happy for him.

I would have LOVED Wallis to win the Norm Smith. That would have stuck it up all those idiot opposition fans.

No that wasn't intentional, he just accidently almost broke his neck. What Long did was crude. No execuses! We have to be consistent here. And personally I thought that Wallis played a really good game.

Longs hit was much more unfortunate than anything.
What Long has tried to do is come in and shephard Simmonds off the ball, with a shirtfront leaving the ball there for any of his own players to pick it up.
Unfotanutaly, Simmonds leant over to pick the ball just a fraction before Long came in and cleaned him up.

Whas it any different to the Pickett, Hocking bumps?? and if he was committed how the hell was he supposed to stop or know he would duck his head?? As for Wallis come on!! it is a contact sport. Enrol the Dees in the local netball comp.

A bit out of character for Long..should be drug tested.Wallis a thug..dunno more of a B grade bully...might scare a few little blokes, but usually gets out of the road when the real heavy action starts ie a couple of times against Barry Hall ..Wallis was missing in action..also against North..Wallis left Solomon and Hardwick to fly the flag when Carey,McKernan and Archer were dishing it out.
Wallis got in a cheap shot against Brad Green
which is more his style.Wallis tough..not really... more of a player who knows his boundaries as a player and so called strongman...and you can't argue with two GF medals can you?

It seems to me dees01 with your two posts on the grand final that you are trying to come up with excuses on why the dees lost. You were thrashed by sixty points, better umpiring wouldn't have made a difference and yes Long was a bit crude but being suspended is a bit harsh. Being a W.C. supporter you cannot say I am being biased, I wanted Melbourne to win but carrying on about it is not the way to go. Melbourne will be a good team for a few more years, more cracks at the finals so it aint the end of the world.

once again jealousy has risen its ugly head.
what long did was no way intentional, or illegal. simmons had the ball and was hit with a fair bump, although it was high, long had his elbow down.
and wallis a thug, did he do anything illegal??????

dees you also should consider the glass house theory. what was different between what long did and what that big weak ****ter schwartz did to jason johnson????
if anything schwartz is a disgrace, he was late and the ball was out of play, to make things worse when the fight started after the long/simmonds incident he ran straight at ramanauskas, the smallest bloke on the field showing how strong he really is
have a look at yourself dees, if long is a disgrace then schwartz should never play again

oh and there one thing different between long and schwartz, longy has a premiership medal around his neck

Obviously people misunderstand what I mean. I am not making up excuses for Melbourne. We were beaten fair and square. But I maintain that what Long did was not legal and he should pay the price. As for Wallis, I have just seen what he did to Brad Green. What a coward picking on a 19 year old kid and worse sending him to hospital. What a disgrace he is. And yes, I do think Schwarz went over the top.

Cmon - it was a bloody grand final! Yea, both teams used rougher than usual tactics, but who cares? Its a Grand Final, and players will do whatever it takes to get an advantage. Yea, Schwartz wanted to fight all day, but so what, the whole season came down to this game, what else could be expected?

It frustrates me that the game I grew up with, and played since under 10's is slowly turning into a big, glorified game of basketball!

What Long did has been totally blown out of proportion - unfortunately Simmons had his head down, and got caught high - free kick of course, but long came in and tried to effect a legitimate hip and shoulder. He was all tucked in, no elbow or anything, it wasnt off the ball, it was just an unfortunate hit where two players where going for the ball, one got there first and put his head down, and the other was committed to the contact.

I bet the Demons fan who started this topic was seated in that old, green members stand, wearing the old grey jacket with patches on the elbows, was attending his 1st game for the year, and referred to all Demons players by their numbers, and not names. Oh, and of course he recently returned from a trip to Wimbledon then a weeks skiing, staying at the Buller Chalet and rocked up to the ground in a spanker of a Range Rover which has, and never will, leave the comforts of suburbia!

Melbourne is one team who has VERY few REAL supporters, and the majority of them make me sick!

I agree with you completely. My cruel boyfriend said it was a legitimate bump. I do not feel this way. I thought it was one of the worst things I have ever seen a vice-captain of a club do. That is a young player trying to get the ball for his team who are being beaten in a gf and what does that bastard do-knocks him out, ruins the biggest footy match of Troy Simmonds life and sends him to hospital to boot!
What Dean Wallis did to Brad Green was not much better. I don't care if it is a grand final, older and experienced players should not go around ganging up on and bashing into young footballers.

A boyfriend already Julia, BOY you don't muck around and as for Longy no elbow and Green had the ball. It is a contact sport and if you want dirty you don't have to go any further than Mr Elbows at Carlscum!!

How old are you Dees01? Don't you remember an all time Filth Bag called Rod Grinter, terry Wallace does? Don't talk of Longy like that you idiot, the guys an ornament to the game. Sure it was a bit crude from Longy but he's not a dirty player, never has been. That's Grand Final footy, just like Schwarz on Johnson, shit happens get over it. Greene wasn't put in hospital by Wallis you idiots, he got hurt in a tackle.

Hey Mini Barb, Longy's bumb wasn't half as bad as that washed up, "19 minute man", thug, Fwaza Bwown's cowardly elbow on Joe Misiti. Short memory Barb?

I can here you cursing now,"just wait 'til we get Kouta back, we'll get ya then". Ha ha ha bad luck Carlscum M&M's you merely delayed the inevitable. Sad realy, such jubbilation for "Jack (Elliott) Shit"

.

facts about the incident:

- it was a legitimate bump

- the ball was in the vicinity of the incident

- there were no elbows raised or any other mailicious act

- he ran in a straight line towards the contest - he did not deviate to 'take him out'

- 99% of footballers would have done the exact same thing given the opportuntiy - the other 1% being pansys

give it a rest - its just a childish case of sour grapes

It looked to me that Simmons turned about 45 degrees just before impact. Long would have made contact with his arm/shoulder if Simmons hadn't turned, and it was too late for Long to slow down. But it still wasn't legal.

At least it gives us Eagles something to throw back every time that Rintoul-Long accident is brought up....

It was an out-and-out charge you morons!!! Now all you Essendon supporters, if it was Farmer that did the same thing to Hird or Lloyd would we be hearing he same schitt being spouted forth in this thread?? I think not. Long should get 4 weeks but being Long will get 2, maybe 1 or then again will probably get cleared. What a joke.

Will you Essendon fans look beyond your team bias just for once if your life. It was an illagal bump.. and on the comment "how did he know he was going to pick the ball up", what utter bullshit! Whats he suppost to do? Play soccer or something? Long should and will pay the price. I must admit though I have always liked Long, but I'm not sure about that anymore. Long should remain is fair self instead of going in for intentional CHARGES at people while they are over the ball. You are all forgetting something...it is called tackling and Long did have the chance, afterall wasn't Simmonds over the ball?

Does any body know whether there is any truth to the rumour that David Schwarz and Darren Goldspink are business partners. If they are business partners and Schwarz avoids being reported for eye gouging, there may be quesions about bias.

Sorry Staggy, maybe you could clear this up for me?

"it was a legitimate bump" - okay, why did he get reported?

"there were no elbows raised or any other mailicious act" - go have another look at the tape.

"99% of footballers would have done the exact same thing given the opportuntiy - the other 1% being pansys" - Have 99% of the players in the competition been reported for charging?

I've never heard thst rumour before macro - but It could be true.

I saw the incident on TV (where was Commetti?) and it certainly was out of character by Longy. I think what made everyone on the boards think it was nasty was when they had to put the neck brace on Simmo. I think Long will go - but missing a few Ansett Cup games wont hurt the Bombers too much.

Some of you blokes get stupider by the week, I have played in a game where a player broke his neck and was unfortunate enough to witness Neil Sachse break his neck, both of which resulted in them becoming quadraplegics.
Longs was a dangerous totally unnecessary act, it was not accidental it was careless at best and cowardly at worst.
This was not a bone crunching thrilling shirtfront, this was a bloke in his most vulnerable position being struck deliberately about the head by a front on charge.
The only thing that got me, was how those gutless bastards from Melbourne let Long walk off the ground after witnessing it.
