The master of kicking the ball over his head, moving away from the goal.
That’s what I remember Diggydig! As a primary schooler in the 70’s I must have practiced that in the backyard 100’s of times! I don’t think he’s underrated it’s just we have had absolute champions in Hudson, Matthews, Dunstall and Franklin either before or after him.

I remember Moncas in his twilight playing years. From memory, a mark he took flipping backwards was always in the opening titles of The Big League, the Saturday night 6.30pm replay show on 7.
Totally unrelated - but isn't it crazy how we had Saturday footy on Channel 7 40 years ago, but don't any more?

Games were not live in the 1980s. Just highlights and maybe one or two quarters on replay. Even Friday nights were on delay until into this century. Due to a policy of not broadcasting live against the gate, most live TV games in the 90s were Vic clubs playing interstate.

But yes, times have changed. We had four channels to chose from - with all the best shows on those four channels. We didn’t need six different platforms! Much better.
Now, hardly anyone under 65 watches free to air TV. Kayo for sport, multiple apps for movies and TV and their phone for news.

Ironically we may have seen a few live games in the states. I distinctly remember the early days of ESPN using Footy for overnight programming. Living in the Eastern Time Zone in the US at the time, the start times would have been perfect for the 1:00 start in Oz.

....................... Neither were known as being particularly tough

I wasn't a big Moncrieff fan. Not 'particularly tough' is as kind as you might put it.
Played smaller than his size, head kinda folded as he stretched for marks, body went limp.
Very accurate, highy efficient.

Did not need to be physical with players like the Matthews boys and others running around. Played his role very well.
