October 2008

Michael Osborne was named in The Melbourne Herald Sun's chief football writer Mike Sheahan's top 50 players of 2008.

Osborne came in at 48.

Recognition for the great season and all the hard work he put in. Thankfully lost that stupidity factor that had crept into his game of doing something in retaliation for something. This year made the ball his sole focus and it worked.

Could we please change the title to reflect his surname correctly as "Osborne"? I know I'm being picky, but he deserves to have his name spelt correctly.

Hey All,

With the 2009 Season about to start, I've reached into the bag and pulled out Michael Osborne for the "My Man" thread for this year. Well... actually I had a choice and after following the highflyers career with interest, I jumped at the opportunity to write up his progress in the season to come. After failing to get Zac Dawson a senior game for the Hawks in 2008, I've decided to try to achieve two points this season for Osborne.

Firstly, his name is spelt OSBORNE. No "U". There is no "U" in Osborne. Clear!? If I can get that through everybody's thick skulls then half my work is done.

Secondly, I'm going to try to help the guy hang onto one of his high flying speccies. I'm sure my moral support goes a long way towards helping our players.

Cheers

Round 1 2009 NAB Cup.

Michael Osborne injured his right knee/leg in the first half of the first NAB Cup round clash against Melbourne at Launceston Saturday 21.02.09.

The injury was severe enough to see Osborne substituted and not take any further part in the game.

Congratulations on 100 Games for Michael Osborne

The Hawthorn utility went out for his 100th game vs the Cats last night. A great start to the new season was soured, however, when Osborne went off the ground during the second half. What we did see of the pocket dynamo, prior to the injury was inspiring and suggests that he'll be backing up his great form of 2008. Two goals for Osborne in the first half helped inspired the Hawks to be within just a couple of kicks at the half time break. Osborne was on crutches by half time and looks like he'll be out for a few weeks - 2-4 at a guess, but update to follow.

An outstanding 100 games to date by the Osborne. Those who've followed his career closely can see that he is just getting better with each match and is rapidly becoming one of the most important cogs in the Hawthorn machine. :thumbsu:

HAWTHORN coach Alastair Clarkson has warned fans not to expect too much from returning forward Michael Osborne.

Osborne comes straight back into the Hawthorn line up this week, without a run with the Hawks’ VFL side Box Hill, after missing four weeks with a hamstring injury.

Good to have Ozzie back. :thumbsu:

Round 8 vs Fremantle - Goal of the year contender.

Hawthorn and Osborne continue to get their season back on track with a workmanlike win over Fremantle. As Hawthorn rediscovers it's winning form for season 2009 it's no coincidence that this coincides with the improving form of the pocket rocket, Michael Osborne. With 14 disposals and some good tackling pressure, Ozzie is coming into form as he is beginning to use every disposal with precision. 3 inside 50's added to his game, but the real highlight was his Goal of the Year Contender, which he kick across his body from the 50m mark right boundary line. An incredible finish to the sparkling work of Cyril Rioli, who performed his own magic trick just getting the ball to Osborne. Expect bigger things to come!

Round 9 vs Melbourne - Improving with Every Game.

Whilst there was no goal of the year, this round, for Osborne, he kept up the improvement and increased his disposals as the Hawks dealt with the Demons. Was a great little game for Osborne, returning with his best disposal figures for the year and taking his goal tally to 5 goals from 5 games. Expect bigger things again in round 10 versus the Crows. :thumbsu:

Round 10 vs Adelaide - Growing possessions.

Osborne continues to get more of the ball, but unfortunately he was getting it mostly where he could do the least. Osborne got loads of possessions on the back flanks and wings, and whilst he used the ball well, it was far from a great game by himself or nearly any Hawthorn player. Bring on round 11.

Round 11 vs Sydney - A minor lull...

After returning from injury, Osborne has shown steady improvement, but round 11 was a pretty quiet game for the bloke. After barely getting a touch in the first half, Osborne looked to be struggling, but he came out in the 2nd half and lifted his game. With a lot more possessions in the 3rd and 4th quarter, many of them across the halfback line as a linking player, Osborne managed to salvage a good second half and helped contribute to a fine Hawthorn win. Whilst still not being on target with his goal shooting, Osborne should be peaking for the game in Tassie against the Lions if his second half was anything to go by.

Round 12 vs Brisbane - Another handy game.

Osborne had another great game versus Adelaide. His first half was exceptional, though his second half, like the entire team, wasn't as good. With 7 inside 50's, Osborne got a lot of quality ball into the forwards. I've been saying it repeatedly, the guy is getting better with each match and is ready to explode. All he needs is get his goal kicking on line or take a hanger... then, watch out!

Round 13 vs West Coast - Betterer...

Osborne is getting better and betterer. Couple of handy goals, loads of possessions, but all to no avail in another shambolic team performance. If he can keep this form up, the Hawks will go a long way to sorting out some kind of decent structure and maybe start notching up some wins.

Round 16 vs Colliwobbles

Running into some decent form again. Handy game. Was looking to take a couple of screamers, but couldn't get his timing right. Still waiting for the game he carves the opposition apart, but it's getting closer...

List assessment: Hawthorn
By Chris Fagan

Michael Osborne
He had a really good pre-season then got injured late. He played round one but hurt his groin. He really didn’t have much of an impact in the team because he was either out injured or struggling for fitness in the first half of the year. But towards the end of the year, he got back to some of his form from last year
